When someone chooses to engage with your business, there's a sacrifice. They're giving up time or money or attention in hopes that you do something for them. Chances are you spend a pretty penny just to get that little bit of engagement. It's logical to want to make the most of it. Your job is to make sure that your business returns something meaningful, memorable, and valuable. If you ever hope to have them as a customer again. And in the age of social media and online reviews, your business is likely exposed to entire audiences you have no control over. When I tell people I'm in marketing, they make assumptions and they're often confused. You mean like advertising? Social media? Like SEO? Like branding? Do you do lead generation? The truth is, I'm really in the engagement business. Which encompasses all those things and more. I like to treat engagement as the most elemental aspect of marketing. Sure, there are logistics and budgets and strategies. There's messaging and design and competitive analysis, but none of that works without legitimate engagement. Engagement is both art and science. The science part— theories, experiments, Measurements, conclusions, adaptation, rinse and repeat. The art part is how does the business tug at an emotion to create engagement? Good news for small businesses, engagement is the easiest thing to fix or improve, but it's all about taking small steps. Business owners don't have a ton of time in their day or endless resources to dedicate to a massive effort. And you don't have to. Making small engagement improvements regularly can be just as powerful. To make sure it's geared towards long-term success, try to connect those engagements with an established vision for where you want your business to be. If you're interested in how to build a plan like this, stay tuned.
