Devin Zander argues entrepreneurs should maintain their bodies like high-performance vehicles. He shares his shift to a vegan diet and recovery from alcoholism, linking physical health to productivity and mental clarity for business success.
Hey, guys, Devin Zander here. Welcome to another episode of the no Name podcast where we have no names, but we have many good times. Alright, so I swear I will eventually come up with a name. I haven't had a chance to think about it yet because I've been too busy working, but I wanted to get my next episode out. And today we're going to be talking about something that a launch a lot of entrepreneurs are overlooking, but it is a huge difference in your life. Your productivity, your success. And I think it's something just really important. So I want to start this episode by asking you a question. So let's say that you bought some sort of exotic animal, right? Like a tiger or, you know, something that's just really expensive, or let's pretend you even got, you know, like a Bengal cat or something a little bit more affordable, you know, like a $2,500 cat. By the way, if you spend that much money on a cat, there's a lot of cats out there who need homes and shelters. I'm just saying. I'm just saying. But, you know, that's a topic for another time anyway, so today we'll go back to our story. If you bought that $2,500 cat tiger or something like that, what are you gonna feed that cat, right? You're not gonna go to your local Walmart, you're not gonna buy cheap canned food, you're not gonna give that to your tiger, are you? I mean, I highly doubt it, right? You're not going to go giving him bottom of the barrel or her bottom of the barrel food. And let's look at a different perspective, right? If you buy a really nice car. I myself huge fan of Porsches. I used to have a 911, traded it in for Mercedes, regretted it, but I love that car and I took outstanding care of it. I was so proud to have gotten this car. I. I worked hard, I wanted one my entire life and I took outstanding care of that car. Let's say I spilled something on the interior of the car or anything. Boy, it was cleaned up in a flash. Okay? My grandma, like, at one point she said she had never seen me move that quickly because I spilled a cherry Coke on the floor of my car and I ran inside and I came back out. I was like, grandma, move your feet. And she has arthritis, so. So she couldn't move her feet very quickly. But I dabbed up the soda and I got it clean real quick. And my grandma was like, wow, Devin, I've never seen you that active. And I've never seen you move that quickly. But I took great care of it. I never got cheap gas. Why would you, you know, you want this bad boy to purr, right? Just like you want your cat to purr. So you get it good food anyways, so, you know, premium gas, always getting it clean, taking good care of it. Now here's something that a lot of entrepreneurs aren't thinking about. I mean, why do we do that, right? Why do we get that good gas for those cars? Why do we give our animals this great food? Because we want them to perform well, right? For our car, we want high performance. Like we bought this car because we want a badass, high performing car for our cat, man, we want that cat's coat to shine. We want it to stay in good health. We want to enjoy our times with it, right? So why is it that so many entrepreneurs are living off of a McDonald's diet? Now, don't get me wrong, I'm a huge fan, a huge, huge, huge fan of Long John Silver's. And if you guys like, come on, Long John Silvers is one of the worst foods that there is. It's disgusting, but I love it and I haven't eaten it in years. Because one thing you need to understand about peak performance and getting great results in physical activities, mental activities, whatever it is, is just having a good diet, right? Because just like that car, just like that Porsche from my story, right? The fuel you put into your body will dictate your performance. If you're eating junk food, you're going to be sluggish, okay? You're going to get low quality work done and you're going to get burnt out extremely quickly. All right? It's safe to say, in my opinion, I'm no medical expert, although there are studies on this, but if someone is eating a really healthy, well balanced diet compared to someone who's living off of McDonald's and Dunkin Donuts, who do you think is going to outperform the other? Who do you think will last longer? Who do you think's brain will function at a higher capacity and get better quality work done? Yeah, it's the person who's eating a healthier diet. And I know that there are outliers to this, right? Let's take a look at Warren Buffett, for example. If anyone has seen his documentary, we know that he's eating McDonald's every single morning and he has been for years. But he's an outlier. There's always going to be outliers. Here's the question that I want you to ask yourself, would you rather play it safe or would you rather risk it for absolutely no reason? I often when I come to these types of decisions, I ask myself, why take the risk? You know, because it's an unnecessary risk to take. So I've been vegan myself, coming up on three years now, and the results have been quite profound. I have got much more energy. My sleep is insanely better. My entire life, I thought that I was a victim to insomnia. Turns out I was just a victim to meat. Okay, I know veganism is not for everybody, right? But. And it doesn't even have to be that extreme, obviously, but my life has gotten obnoxiously better. I get better work done. We've had the best years in our business by far. Now, I don't want to say that they're correlated, right? But it's pretty weird that the same year that I went vegan, our revenue went up like 6x. It's not like some small thing where you, you know, oh, I went vegan. And now this year, you know, we made 10% more revenue. No, it's like 600%. And then we've been able to hold results like these. Right. And that's in our software company, specifically. So I just think that as entrepreneurs and as people who want the best for ourselves, obviously, you know, we're here, we're trying to build a business. We're trying to change our lives or impact other people's lives. And. And the place you need to start is your own temple, okay? Your body is your own temple. Take care of it. I also was talking to someone the other day, and her name's Kay. She's a brand expert. She's helping me with my personal branding, actually. And I was talking to her, and there's a quote out there. I'm gonna pull it up really quickly. I'm on my computer, but it really rings true. Let me Google it real quick. All right, I Googled it. Let's see if we can find it here. So it's actually a quote by Socrates, and aside from all the health reasons and things like that. Right. The quote says, no man has the right to be an amateur in the matter of physical training. It is a shame for a man to grow old without seeing the beauty and strength of which his body is capable. Now, this next point is morbid, but you really only have one life to live. And I want you to ask yourself, how do you want to, you know, be? How do you want your life to Be. Do you want to see and accomplish all that you're capable of? Do you want to have the physique, the peak physique, the peak mental capacity? Because it all starts with diet. It really does, you know, you can work out as much as you want, but if you're eating pure shit and you're eating a ton of it, I mean, it's gonna be really, really hard to get in good shape and it's gonna be really, really hard to get good work done. So I think that people need to just focus on eating cleaner. I think going vegan is outstanding if any of you are brave enough to do it. I know that almost sounds like a challenge, right? You have to go vegan, by the way. That's a personal choice. I think it is extreme. But vegetarianism or just cutting back on red meats and, you know, people will probably come out of the woodwork and want to stab me for something or for saying that. But I just think that you should try it. See how it affects your life, see how it affects your business. See if it gives you more mental clarity. Give it a few days, right? Don't give up meat if you don't want to, but get a more well balanced diet. Eat healthier, at least cut out things like alcohol, cigarettes, stuff like that. Because there's absolutely, literally zero benefit to smoking, there's zero benefit to drinking. They're both poison for your body. And ask yourselves, like, hey, this is killing me, Do I need this? What's the benefit of doing this, right? And another question I like to ask myself, and this was when I was losing weight, I don't know if you guys know this, but I was severely overweight for a while, almost about £240. I got back down to about 170, so I lost quite a bit of weight. And I would always want food. I'd be reaching for that food, right? And you know, total junk food, like I said, Taco Bell, Long John Silver, stuff like that. And when I was reaching for the food, I would say, devin, how will I feel after if I eat this? And how will I feel afterwards if I don't eat this? I knew that if I did eat it, I would be upset with myself. I would feel like shit. And I mean, it's over, it's gone. Like I had the good food, I tasted it, right? But now there's zero enjoyment left, just regret. And I knew if I didn't eat it or I didn't reach for it, then I would be left feeling great, proud of myself. And knowing that I'm in control of my own life. So. And I think it's important to do the same thing with things like alcohol and cigarettes and stuff like that and think to why you actually do drink, right? Because it's kind of funny how alcohol companies market their products. And, you know, I've struggled with my own alcoholism in my life, by the way. I don't want you guys to think that I'm just some guy who. He was like, yeah, alcohol is bad. Don't drink. But, you know, I've had my own demons. I've overcome. I've relapsed, and I'm in the process of overcoming again. Right? But the. These are probably the worst things you could do for your health and for your business. Specifically, the way alcohol affects your brain and the way that it causes your brain to get inflammation, it makes thinking very difficult. So ask yourself before you go to that next drink, right? Do I want this drink? Because the alcohol companies and their commercials said it was gonna turn me into some stud sex magnet to say. Or that these commercials told me that, hey, it's gonna make people like you more. Hey, it's gonna make your times with your friends more fun. It's just not true. They're. They're marketing lies that were told to us, right? We don't need alcohol to have fun. We don't need it to enjoy our lives. You know, we're. We're good people. We're out here, we're having a good time with people. We love building businesses, and we don't need these vices, these crutches. All we need is to take care of ourselves and produce great results, really put in effort. I think that's the big thing. Anyways, so that's kind of what I wanted to talk about today. Just the fact that, look, if you want to get good output, you need to have good input into your body. You are a vehicle. You. You are just like that beautiful car that you dream of having or that you do have or whatever it is. And you wouldn't treat that car like shit because you want it to perform well. You want it to last. You want your friends to be envious or, you know, like, damn, Devin's got a nice car, man. Look at him. He's doing good. Good for him. He worked hard for that. All right? Your body is the same. Whatever you input, whatever fuel you input, whatever drugs or anything you input, right? It's going to have an output. It's going to affect your output. If you're eating shit if you're doing drugs and, you know, drinking a lot of alcohol, I don't think weed or anything like that is necessarily too bad. If you're drinking a lot of alcohol, it's going to affect your output. You're going to be slow, you're going to be sluggish, and your work is going to be a quarter of as good as the person who is taking care of themselves. So just keep that in mind. You deserve the best in life. You deserve to be the best version of yourself. And you know, you deserve great results. So make sure you think twice before, you know, you hit up that drive through or you make, you know, that super unhealthy sandwich. Treat yourself like you would your car or your pet or your exotic pet. Right. Anyways, that's all for today. This is Devin Zander on the no Name podcast. I hope you guys enjoyed.
