In this short spoken monologue, business designer and mentor Donna Brown challenges the common belief that purpose is a single, discoverable mission that will magically align one’s life. She recounts her own search for a “one‑size‑fits‑all” purpose and argues that the illusion of a fixed, external purpose leads to frustration. Instead, she proposes that purpose is simply who you are: the unique way you express yourself, the activities that bring you joy, and the natural way you show up in the world. Purpose, she says, is not a job title or a static mission but an ongoing way of being, rooted in personal interests, curiosity, and authentic self‑expression. She encourages listeners to explore, have fun, and continuously deepen their understanding of themselves and their relationship to the world, inviting them to share their own thoughts on purpose.

What if I were to tell you that I have a one-size-fits-all answer to the question, what is your purpose? This is a huge topic of conversation and people spend time and money and energy trying to figure out this big thing called purpose. I spent a lot of time in my life looking for this thing, thinking that if I found this one magic thing, All of a sudden everything else would click into place and I wouldn't have any more doubts. My path would be laid out for me. I would know exactly what I was doing and where I was going, and I would just ride off happily into the sunset. And I think that so many of us have suffered from this illusion that if we find this thing called purpose, it's going to come to us like an electric shock, or it's going to be so Knowable and recognizable that there will be no mistaking it. But I would like to give— flip that on you and say, what if it's something so much easier than what you've been thinking? And what if it's so much easier and more fun than anything you have thought of before? What if you were to just consider the possibility That you are your purpose. Uh! And by that I mean, you are your purpose. It is up to you to make yourself happy, to find out what excites you, to explore life, to work out, to go on adventures big and small, to discover as much as possible about the world and the people around you. And your own interior landscape, sort of who you are, what makes you tick, what makes you happy, how you naturally show up in the world, and the things that bring you joy. What if it were just that simple? It would really change all those, uh, find your mission, find your purpose. I do talk about that too because I believe that ultimately our purpose is also a way of rather than something that you can put a title to, like a job title. So there are people that have vocations and they're musicians and doctors and maybe sometimes researchers and others as well, but these are just a few examples. But what if it's the way of being, that natural form of expression, that natural way you have of showing up and relating to the world and the way, that unique way you have of seeing the world, What if just going deeper and deeper into that, into understanding what it means to be human, what it means to be you, what does that look like in, in the rest of the world? What does that look like as you try and bring forth the everythingness and the muchness that you are? So that's the little thought for today. I'd love to hear what you have to say. about purpose, if you think you found your purpose or the way you describe your purpose, or if this might get a few little wheels turning and give you a little, a few more insights. I'm Donna Brown, business designer and mentor, and that's my thought for the day.
