Donny Raus argues you shouldn't wait to travel or chase your dreams. He shares personal stories about seizing the moment and pushes back against the excuses that keep people stuck.
Hi, guys. My name is Donny Rouse, and you are listening to the podcast One Life, A Town Called Nowhere. The road to someday leads to a town called Nowhere. Said differently. What is the cost of putting off those dreams, those things that you want to do? Maybe you're putting off that perfect trip because you say you don't have the money. Which I would argue with that because that is a completely different podcasting episode, because I believe that, one, there's always a way to find the money, and two, it depends on how you travel. I've been to more than 39, I think 40 countries now, and I will tell you, I probably spent more in those 39 than some people have spent visiting 2. So I promise you money is not the issue. And so when we put off things that matter to us, life gets in the way. We get older. You might get that job that you can't leave. You might have kids. This was the story of. I have two people that I ran into, one on my trip and then someone else I'd ran to recently on my way back home. And they were the inspiration behind this because it's what so many people, so many friends of mine have kind of fallen into that trap where they said that one day they would take that trip. All of a sudden they're married with two kids, and there's no way they're going to escape because their kids are, like 3 years old. So I was in Miami, Florida. I was riding the bus back from downtown to Miami beach, and I started a conversation with this woman who was sitting next to me. We'll call her Michelle. We started talking. She went on to kind of like, pour her heart out about this guy that she was dating from Turkey who broke her heart and how she had spent her entire life doing things for others, trying to make other people happy. But the one person that she didn't do stuff for, the one person that she neglected, was herself. She went on to tell me that her aspiration that she was going to move to Holland and live in Amsterdam. And I applauded her. I was like, all right, well, you totally should. I will totally agree with you. I'll give you my blessing. Go do it. But I could hear in her voice that there was the seeded well, not even the seed. It was like the tree of doubt, that there was no way that that would ever happen. And it's like, because we tell ourselves stories, well, you know, someday I'll do it. Someday I'll do it. We try to make others happy, and as a result, we're putting off those things that really matter to us. A different story. I met this. We'll call him Michael to protect the innocent. I was talking to Michael and I was telling him about my trip. I was saying, yeah, I was in my. He's. How was your trip? I told him how I was in Miami, Florida, spent a month there, went to Puerto Rico for a week and a half, then went to Palm beach, and now I'm back here in Connecticut and likely I'm going to move, leave again for my birthday. And he says, wow, I don't know how you do it. I was like, what do you mean, how do I do it? I just do it. He's like, how? You just go. You know, how you just go out, you travel by yourself, you meet people. I was like, well, you know, I mean, I can tell you how to do it. It's quite easy. And he said, well, I can't do it. Maybe when I was younger I would have done it, but now I'm old. What am I going to do now? I told him that if he were to book that trip now, he would still. I mean, it would still be an experience, maybe a different experience, but it would still be an experience. He would still find the joy. It would still give him perspective, it would still give him growth. But I'll tell you the truth, the chances of him doing that are probably close to nil. And it's because there's a comfort zone there. He has never traveled alone and he has no one to travel with. I mean, are there ways around that? Sure, he could go to a travel group. He could, you know, ask. Maybe he'll find a friend. I don't know. There's always ways around. There's always answers to the questions that we have, the problems that are in front of us. But again, will he do it? I don't know. I hope so. I mean, I really think highly of the guy. And why am I telling you this? Why is this important to you? Because so often people we put off the important things matter because we think they're too small and that there's other things that take priority when realizing that these are the important things, these are the things that matter to our lives, these are the things that are going to enrich our lives. And when you put these things off, what happens? I mean, life gets pretty complex. I mean, this past year has been proof of that. You don't know what's going to happen. If you have the health now, do it. If you have the money now, and you might Say, oh, well, you know, I don't have the money to travel. I will challenge you on that. Speak to me personally and I will help you find that money. Do it if you have the time, or you think you don't have the time. Well, how about if you have kids, right? How about if you have other. You know what? If you don't have the health, There's a million other things that can get in the way of you doing the thing that you want to do. It's one of the challenges, or I wouldn't even call it a challenge. I'm calling it a challenge because other people always question my way of living. Other people, a lot of people praise. They say, you know what? I envy you. I wish I could travel. I wish I could do all the things you do, man. You have the life. Then there's another group of people said, well, what are you doing? You know, like, you're going to be 40. You should be doing A, B, C, and D. And then they should, should, should, should, should, should, should. And I had said this before, that when I look at their lives, these are not lives that I want to emulate. But yet we tend to get influenced by our surroundings and the people we surround ourselves with. And as a result, we end up mirroring their lives. We may not even be conscious of it, and we may not want it. So let's bring it back to the. Let's bring it back to something tangible, something that you could act on now, or at the very least, we could start to plant that seed. They say, all right, well, what is it that I want to do? What is it? Well, rather than give you hypotheticals, let me give you the questions. What is an experience that you want to have that you've been putting off because you told yourself that you'll do it someday? When? Write 1, 2, 3, 10 on a piece of paper right now, or just keep it in your mind. Why do you want that experience? This is just to get you acquainted with the feelings of it, right? Because just to say I want to go to South Africa. All right, this sounds nice, but if I say I want to go to South Africa because I want to see the view from Tabletop Mountain, I want to go to Boulder beach, and I want to climb over the boulders and I want to swim with the penguins, how would that make me feel? Oh, my God. I'd feel alive. I'd feel ecstatic. That is a different feeling. That is a different set of emotion that you're attaching to that experience. How would it Feel. The next question how would it feel to have that experience now? Meaning where you are right now with your current health, with. I mean, again, don't worry about the financial position, but just to say, how would it feel to have it now in this instant? If you could do it next week, how would it feel? What would be the benefit of doing, doing it next week if you could write that down. And then how would the experience change if you put it off for 20 years? You got to start thinking about it, well, what is my health going to be like in 20 years? Maybe what's your financial position going to be like? You might think you don't have the money now, but let's go out 20 years when you have five kids and you have a mortgage and a car payment and all this other stuff. And then lastly, what is the cost of not doing it at all? It's one of the things that people never really ask themselves because we think there's this feeling that we're immortal. And for me, when I see my nieces and nephews growing up, when I see my parents aging, it's like this, wait a minute, what's going on here? Even if you see your own body aging, we tend to think that we're going to live forever and that the end is never going to come now. We'll always have the time. But that is not the case. That is not the case. Worst case scenario, I mean, I'm not even going to say it because you know what's coming. But second to worst case scenario is that you don't have the health to do it. Maybe you're bedridden, you don't know what's going to happen. So why wait? Why wait? This is the podcast I wanted to give you guys today. It was on my mind. It's just kind of like carpe diem. Seize the day. Do those things that are going to bring you joy, have those experiences, because I promise you, they are going to be the ones that enrich your life so much where when the dark clouds come and it starts to rain, those memories are going to be what picks you out and you remember you did that.
