Donny Raus talks visualization, time management, and backward planning to hit your goals. He shares how he stopped stressing about time and plans to build a well in Africa through a charity project.
Hi, guys. My name is Donnie Rouse, and you are listening to the podcast One Life. Today we're going to talk about visualization and time. So what exactly does that mean when we're talking about time? Time is the one thing that each of us were made equal in. We all have the same amount of time. The only difference is, how do we use it? Time is an invaluable resource because time, with time, it allows us to get those resources to create our dreams, to build our lives. Prior to this year, if you had ever asked me to plan out my day or plan out a week, plan out a trip, I resisted it like it was the plague or a really, really bad cup of coffee. And the reason was being because I'm like, I don't have the time to plan my day. That takes too much time. I don't have the time to do that. One of the biggest learning points that I learned this year was that if you don't have the time to plan or if you fail to plan, you plan to fail. And it really comes down to taking that time to actually put the thought into what it is you want to create. What is the best path to get there? There's a mantra that I say over and over whenever I feel and catch myself being stressed out because of time. I say, so much time, so little to do. So much time, so little to do. Say that over and over when you're feeling that and you'll slowly start that stress, you'll feel that stress to kind of melt away, and you'll feel better about where you are right there. And it kind of clears up that mind. Because don't forget our thoughts. Our words become thoughts. Let me rearrange. Our words become thoughts. Let's say it one more time. Our words become thoughts. So we have to be conscious. So even in that moment when I was feeling stressed out and saying that I don't have time, the incident coming to my mind right now is being late for one of the markets where I was vending my coffee and I was stressed out because I had just woken up. I'm like, oh, my God, I'm so late. I'm so late. Stop. So much time, so little to do. So much time, so little to do. And I repeated it over and over. And all of a sudden, I felt my system kind of wind down. And wouldn't you know, having woken up an hour later than how I would typically start my day, I end up getting to the same time as I normally do. And it's because I wasn't stuck in this stressful state. Planning. It's so important to plan because some people have, they do their daily planning, they'll make their to do list, they'll cross off the to do list and feel like I've accomplished something. I feel great about today. But what is it really that you're creating when you're only focusing on that day? By focusing on your day, you're kind of focusing on all the stuff that just coming at you. You're in a way, you're being reactive, you're reacting to the world environment. Oh, this has to be done. Okay, Boom, boom. Alright. This has to be done the proper way to planning. And this is something I picked up. This year finally started. Well, not that I picked up, I knew, but just started to put it into practice, was looking out into the future and thinking of seeing those things that you want to occur and then kind of pulling it backward and planning it backward. There is a really cool exercise I did where you look at your year and it's great time. I mean, you could start this any time of year. Here in the United States we have this thing about wait until New Year's because it's like a blank slate when really there is no, there's no barrier. We could start a blank slate anytime, any place, it doesn't matter. But when you start from that blank slate and you say, you know what? Today is going to be the first day of the year for me. And you plan out, well, what are the things I want to happen this year in my life? And you kind of let your imagination run wild. You write them down on a piece of paper and then you just start to plant them in the calendar. Three months out, five months out, 12 months out. And you put together these hypothetical, somewhat hypothetical, but imagine that perfect year that you had, those celebrations you would have and you start putting them on the calendar, something interesting happened, at least when I did it. And as I was putting these events, these travels, these educational retreats, all these things on my calendar, I started to build up this excitement inside of me. And I found myself asking the question, how can I make this happen? What do I have to do now in order to make this happen? Then something completely different. One, I've done these dreaming brainstorm sessions about dreams. List all the things you want and then let's put them out into the future somewhere without having a calendar in front of me. And then this practice, I actually printed out a calendar and thought about the experiences mostly that I wanted to have. And I started putting on there And I started getting really excited about my 2020. And I woke up in a little bit of a funkafung. My heater went off in the middle of the night. So I woke up to about 59 degrees, which makes it pretty difficult to wake up. I didn't want to get out of bed. I started the day I went to meditate first thing. And I couldn't even get into that meditative state. But I did it anyways because I know that the practice involves those times where you can't really quiet your brain down. So I did it anyways. I did my morning rituals about the things that focusing on the things I want to create. And it didn't really feel like it was having the effect that it had because my mental state, because I was so groggy and I was kind of a little anxious about not getting that sleep and then waking up late to start my day that wasn't in a great state. But then I started doing this planning process and putting that planning process. Granted, it took probably, I think I put at least a couple hours into it, maybe even more. But putting that amount of time shifted that focus. Now I started getting excited about all the things I want to create. And it had a huge effect, I'll say it again, huge, huge effect on how I felt that day. And then also for what was possible in my year, that is the plan that I'm going to be enacting. So there's some cool things to come. But I will say one thing that has happened. So in this little brainstorming session where I was plugging these things in the calendar, one of the things I wanted to do was start a charity. But then I was thinking about what's this charity that I want to start? And I have an idea for that. But I wanted to do something else now because I don't believe that I have to wait until 12 months out before I could start doing this charity and you waste time. What about now? Why can't I do something right now to make a difference in the world? Why can't I make a change right now to impact someone else's life? So I decided I had seen this advertisement somewhere before where an organization built a well in some African village and as a result, they had fresh water. Fresh water they could drink, cook and do all sorts of things with. I travel a lot. So as I mentioned, I think in the last podcast I been to for 49 countries so far and I'll probably top 55 by the end of this year, hopefully 60 if I'm if I am, I'll just throw 60 out there. We'll plant that seed. 60 by the end of the year. And one of the things that you encounter often is that the water is not safe to drink. I was just in Vietnam and in Hanoi. You're looking at this lake. People are fishing, and they're eating the fish coming from this lake. Meanwhile, the lake has this, like, this hue of green. And if you walk around the lake long enough, you'll see there's patches where the fish are just floating there. They're not sunbathing. They're. They're literally floating dead. So you got to wonder, well, what is actually going on in this water? Like, what else is present? What? I was told that there was probably sewage runoffs from human waste being fed in there, because you know what? When these things were built, they probably didn't know better. And in a lot of these places, they're literally focused on survival. And I say that with very, very deep respect. Hanoi was one of my favorite, favorite cities. I was not even expecting that. Hanoi was one of my favorite cities that I visited in a while. But you see how, you know, different people live, and you look at the luxuries we have, such as clean water and so many things that we take for granted. So that popped in my mind. I was, you know what? I'm going to build a well. I'm going to raise the money, and I'm going to build a well in Africa, and that's what I'm going to do this year. I even set a date. I don't have the calendar in front of me, but. But I think it's probably somewhere around August. And so that is pretty much it. Guys, I wanted to tell you, if you have those dreams, if you have those desires that you want to make happen, it's not enough just to hold them in your mind to say, oh, at some point this is going to happen. If you don't have it written down, the chances of it happening are nil. Unless you kind of have, like, something that's in there that's kind of constantly flashing it in front of your brain to give you the focus to focus on it. I do that with my travels, and every place I go to, I will put it as a screensaver. So this way, every time I open my computer, I'm staring right at it. But if you don't have that repetition, that constant reminder of what it is you're going after, the chances of you getting it are small. That is it your assignment. I Love giving out homework whenever I do these podcasts. But I really think that if you just kind of take the time to do it, I think you'll notice it is a game changer. It'll make you feel different, it'll make you feel happier, you'll feel more inspired. Then it's just a matter of sticking with it. But take a piece of paper and plug it on a calendar. Just pick out an event, maybe it's a trip you want to go to or destination or something you want to do with a friend and just put it on a calendar, some far off in the distance where you can say, you know what, this feels realistic to me. I'm going to put it over here. And by saying realistic, meaning if it's farther out, like if you say, I'm going to go to Italy, I'm going to do it next week, you could totally make it happen. Might not be realistic, but putting it out there gives you the space in your mind to say, you know what, I have time here. There might be six months that I could totally make this happen in six months and put that event on the calendar and then just kind of see what your mind does and trying to work backwards to make it happen.
