Donny Raus talks about the cycle of success, drawing from a Tony Robbins seminar. He argues that small victories build momentum and that celebrating achievements while staying positive through setbacks drives real growth.
Hi, guys. My name is Donny Rouse, and you are listening to the podcast One Life Building on Success. Do you ever notice that when things are going good, they tend to get better? And then the opposite is also true. When things get bad, it seems like they can't get worse, and all of a sudden they do. Why is that? The reason is something called the cycle of success. I was recently doing a Tony Robbins seminar, and it brought this new awareness to how we start to build momentum on both the good things in life as well as the bad things in life. The only, like the switch that allows us to flip from one to the other is just where we're putting our focus. So in this episode here, I'm gonna go into the cycles of success in terms of how it works, how you start to build that momentum, as well as maybe some of those things that might be keeping you out of that success loop. So let's get into it. Success. So when we think about an action that we've taken or a result we've gotten, we think about the mindset you've been in. So in order for you to strive to reach for something, you must first have the belief that you can achieve it. And with that belief, you believe that you have the potential. As a result of having that potential, you start to take a massive action. You take action. Usually it's a pretty big action, too. After taking that action, you get a result, and then it only reinforces that belief. You may not get the result immediately, but because you have this belief, you already see that final outcome, that goal that you're striving towards. You get back in that cycle and you keep going and going until you eventually arrive at that end destination, or if you want to call it the success, but let's flip it around to the other side. Now, how about when things are going really shitty, where is your state? Where are you? Then when things are bad, you start to focus on what's going wrong. And when you think about striving or doing a task when you're in a bad state, you don't think the potential is there. And as a result of having not feeling that potential, you take small action, which you might as well have not taken at all because you didn't believe in it anyway. So of course it wasn't going to work. And then you get shitty results. And as a result, again, that you go back to your belief system saying, you know what? I knew it wasn't going to work. And you start down that vicious cycle of a downward spiral versus going Up. One of the things I realized as a result of doing this seminar, Tony Robbins. So this is like, this is a concept he taught, and I'd heard of it, but you know what they say is, like, when the student was ready, the teacher appears. So for some reason this time around, it really, really stuck with me, and I came away with a new awareness. When I look back at the things I was achieving in life and both in my business as well as personal, I wasn't taking the time to celebrate. I wasn't taking the time to build on my successes. Because you could only build on success. Think about that real quick. You can only build on success. What does that mean for me? It's like, well, all right. Well, when you build on success first, when you acknowledge the success, you start to feel good, don't you? You start to like, oh, wow, this was a. I noticed this, or I completed this action. It was a first step. Maybe it was a small one, but I'm in the right direction. And you start to build on it. But look, think of a time where you beat yourself up. You wanted something, but you might have beat yourself up because you didn't perform it correctly, or how you would have envisioned the first time, which is, if you're doing it the first time, what the heck were the chances of you doing it? Perfect anyways, so shame on you for that. And when I was looking back in my own life, I realized that I was having these victories. Like, I mean, you could take something as my podcast, being here, consistently recording podcasts, getting New York Times bestseller sellers to, you know, to interview all these things I was doing, but I wasn't celebrating it. I might have been fixing, you know, had my focus set on a different outcome or a different goal, maybe engaging with people. But these are all little mini, mini, like, small victories. All small victories. And I was cheating myself out of the feelings. Like, out of the emotion of being able to say, wow, look at. This is what I did. Let me give myself a little applaud, a little pat on the back. If you can't. You can't see me here, but I'm patting myself on the back and clapping my hands. But. But as a result of just taking that little action, even, like, the pat, literally, I was joking around, but not joking. Literally, if you clap your hand or give yourself a high five or pat yourself on the back, there is some reinforcement in that. It does make you feel good. Maybe it goes back to when we were younger and giving our schoolmate a high five. So I realized that I wasn't doing this. And then I said, you know what? Something's wrong with this. All these little things that I'm doing throughout the day, I'm not giving myself credit. I'm not allowing myself to celebrate that. And when you think about going through your day, how do you. How are you reacting to yourself? Let's just split into two actions. Celebrating or breaking yourself down. Where do you think most people live? The majority are probably breaking themselves down. I would assume I don't have any, like, exact numbers, but I would assume that the majority of people are breaking themselves down. So let me tell you about a shift. So as I was. As I came across this, like this. As came about this, like this realization, like, man, I've been really beating myself up. I've been doing a lot of stuff that I just haven't been giving myself credit for. Some of those things are things that I've done for years, and as a result of just the. The repetitiveness of it, I don't even count it anymore. I don't even look like, wow, you know what? I've been doing this so long that what used to take me hours to do now takes me a couple minutes. I didn't give myself the credit for even small victories like that. So I started to become more hyper aware of my day, more hyper aware of things I can do, ways I could acknowledge the success in my day. And I'll give you one point here. One point is, or one instance is literally just being able to catch my mind drifting off into some direction. For example, a thought pattern. I might be wake up and interact with somebody and get triggered in some way. Rather than beat myself up and be like, oh, my God, I'm getting triggered from this. Why do I keep getting triggered this? I said, you know what? Congratulations, Donnie. You identify that you saw that you were getting triggered and you watched, or you became aware of it. You didn't let it trigger you. You observed it. That is a success. And it doesn't just have to be with interrupting a thought pattern. It could be anything, any little action you take. Maybe it's a Facebook post for your business that you've been really hesitant to do, but all of a sudden you put it out. You might not have gone out a big way, but nevertheless, you out there and it was a step. You celebrate those. Because it's all. It's the. It's a compound. It's like putting a dollar into a bank account that earns 10% interest. Not in these days, but it'd be Great if we could get 10% interest. But imagine that. And year after year, month after month, year after year, having that interest compound. It just builds and builds and builds until eventually you might have some. A million dollars or, you know, whatever. I'm not gonna go into finance, but you know what I mean. So think of the effect that that would have on your life. What do you think? If you, instead of looking at setbacks, instead of looking at things as failures, because there is no failure, there's always something to learn. What would life be like if you instead chose to ignore all the things and only look for the positive, only look for the successes, things you could learn even if it's a failure, but you learn something that's a success. We don't. A lot of us, I know I didn't. We look past that as a guy. It's not a success. It is a success if you learn something. What do you think life would be like if you took that and made that your focus for a day, for a week, for a month, for a year and decades and keep. Keep going all the way out? What do you think the effect would be? I'll tell you. One, your self confidence would be through the roof. Two, you take much bigger action to be striving things because now it's fun. Now you're kind of looking for things that you could learn, ways that you could build versus what would happen if you did the opposite. You don't even want to go to that place. That's a dark place. A dark place. I always leave these podcasts with an exercise, something for you to do to put this into action, get it into your body. So why don't start today? All right, well, forget today. Why not start right now? What are some successes that you could write down just from this past day or this past week? Take a couple minutes, press pause, and just come up with as many as you can. How many did you come up with? If you said more than 5, 10, whatever it is, good. Again, I want to go back to this because it's an important point. If you didn't come up with many, or maybe you came up with one, what are you counting as success? Your definition? You may be making things too big. Meaning, like, well, you know what? I didn't get that raise or I didn't land that account. You may be looking for these giant boulders to count them as success. When success is all in the little moments when I teach, you know, people, when I go through my course and how to be present and just enjoy life. Life. Life, I mean, it's kind of like a metaphor for everything. Life is made up of the small moments. It's not these big moments, because a lot of time we get to these big moments and then we're like, all right, well, is that it? Because the moment doesn't last for that long. So acknowledge the little moments, because that's where the magic is. That's what allows you to build the momentum. By acknowledging and appreciating those small victories, those small moments, you start to appreciate life. So that is it. Again, if I'm going to wrap this up in a small box and put a giant red bow on, is just to be conscious, be aware, give yourself credit. Look for the small victories in your day. And if you want, keep a journal of it and just write down every time, because it all builds on something you could. A more productive way of doing would be, say, looking at a goal that you want and say, okay, well, who do I have to become to get that or to become that or to have that? And start taking small steps towards that goal. And just the fact that you're taking step or even writing it down, that's a victory, that's a success. And just watch it compound. Guys, thank you so, so much for tuning in. I hope you enjoyed this. This was really a spontaneous post right here. I wasn't planning on doing this, but as I was going about my day, I said, you know what, let me sit on the computer. Let me just record this because I'm feeling inspired.
