Donny Rouse left corporate work to start a coffee company and talks about why pretending to be someone else costs you. He argues that chasing what others expect drains you faster than chasing what you actually want.
Most people spend their entire life stressed without ever giving a single thought as to what it is they really want or what's important to them. See, I'm here to cut through all that noise, connecting you to yourself and the life that you were meant to live. I used to slave away at a corporate job that I hated, but I broke through the social norms and pursued my passion. As a result, I own my own coffee company. I'm espresso sommelier, and I get to travel the world. You, too, can live a life that you love, but it starts with getting clear about what you want. It starts with a new decision. I'm your host, Donnie Rouse. You are listening to the podcast One Life. Drop the facade. Who do people say you are? Or if I can ask a different question, who do you think you have to be to those other people? I was watching this movie. I think it was called the Popes. It was about Pope Benedict and Pope Francis. And if you've grown up Catholic, you are probably familiar with the very rigid belief system and expectations of someone living the religious in a religious life. And in this movie, Pope Francis was, I guess, not looked down on, but people looked at his way of lifestyle and were saying, well, this is contradictory to the world way a priest or a cardinal is supposed to live their life. And I thought about that, and I was looking at that in the movie. And how when you think about life like, what. What is the meaning of life? Right? The meaning of life. At least I believe the meaning of life is to live is to enjoy and to be a part of life. Something happens when we put ourselves into this mold and we feel like, all right, well, we can no longer be in ourselves or be individuals, because if we do, then we might fall out or people might not take us seriously. We may not be the coffee roaster because this is how people are supposed to act in this field or with this title. And it's a trap that everyone could fall into because you start to shed parts of yourself, those very things that make you unique, that bring the color to the profession, to whatever it is that you're doing. I thought about this question for myself after watching the movie. I said, all right, well, who am I pretending to be? Or who do I think I have to be? As I pondered that question, I realized that, like, I thought, you know, that I had to have. Had to have all the answers. I had to look like everything was picture perfect. I had to be, you know, the coffee roaster professional that knew everything, how to do things a certain way. I Remember going to a Tony Robbins seminar a while back or. I'm sorry, it wasn't a seminar. It was a coach that I had in the past. And as we were going about and I was telling him about, like, my experience in coffee, and we were talking about life, he goes, well, who are you if you're not Donny Rouse, the coffee roaster? When he asked that question, I didn't know. I was kind of like. I was dumbfounded. I was like, I don't know who I am. If I'm not living this identity, I don't know who I am. And at the time, I was unhappy in that spot because there was, like a. There was a mold that you had to fit in. If you were a coffee roaster or, like a coffee professional in the third wave, there was a mold you had to fit. Usually it was like a fedora and a mustache, but. And when I looked at that, I was like, well, this is not me. Like, I don't fit this. This. This mold that everyone, you know, people are, are, are, are. Say that this is how it's supposed to be. So I felt kind of like a fraud in that area. So after watching the movie the Popes, I was brought to that question again. Who do I have to. Who am I trying to be? Who do I think I have to be? And then I thought about how I come up here and even do, like, podcasts or if I'm doing a live. Sometimes I get into the mindset where I'm like, you know, even. I don't know if you just noticed it, but even as I'm doing this podcast, there was a shift. I felt the shift in me as I'm speaking to you, versus the beginning when I just started this to now. Now it feels like I'm connecting actually right with you. But there's this feeling that, well, everything has to be perfect. Everything has to be buttoned up. There is no room for mistakes. I have to know everything. It's just not true. And then the moment you acknowledge that, the moment you acknowledge that you're perfect the way you are, you don't have to be anyway, is the moment you let the steam valve off and you just blow off the steam and you calm down and you feel at peace, and you can feel at peace with yourself. So the intention of this episode is really to get you to take a moment and to think about that exact question. Who do you think you have to be for everyone else? What if you could just relax if you didn't have to be anything for anybody. And you can just be. Because if we're talking about creating a life that you're passionate about and a life that you're happy with, it could only come from that place. Because if you're creating from any other frame of mind, any other place, you're not going to be fulfilled because you always feel like you're chasing. You're always chasing something, and you're never quite getting there. So, again, we'll end this with a couple questions. Who do you feel like you have to be? You could look at this. One way of looking at it is looking at the occupation you have, the title that you have. Sometimes we start off in an occupation with these big aspirations, but then the title kind of shifts us to behaving and doing things a certain way because we think that is the accepted way. We think that's how it's supposed to be. If that's the case, I want you to acknowledge that and then realize, what was it that got me started in this in the first place? And live from that perspective. Live from that place. So, again, who is it you feel like you have to be? Second question. What if you can just be? What if there was no one to impress? What if you didn't have to do anything for anybody, be anything for anybody, but you can just be who you are? You could drop the facade. How would that feel? Here's the irony in the question is that more likely than not, you are the very thing that you're trying to be, but just not acknowledging it. So when you actually stop trying to be something and just be your authentic self, that's when that you're going to shine through. And that's when you'll acknowledge yourself as that. That very person you're trying to be. I hope you enjoyed this podcast, guys. This is one I did on a whim. I wanted to get on here and record it just because I just watched the movie and I didn't want too much time to go by because sometimes when that happens, you know, I kind of forget, like, what the entire. What the premise was or my intention was for doing the recording in the first place. So I hope you enjoyed this episode.
