Donny Rouse talks about identifying your core values and using them to guide decisions, even when fear gets in the way. He connects living by your values to building the future you actually want.
Most people spend their entire life stressed without ever giving a single thought as to what it is they really want or what's important to them. See, I'm here to cut through all that noise connecting you to yourself and the life that you were meant to live. I used to slave away at a corporate job that I hated, but I broke through the social norms and pursued my passion. As a result, I own my own coffee company, I'm espresso sommelier and I get to travel the world. You too can live a life that you love, but it starts with getting clear about what you want. It starts with a new decision. I'm your host, Donnie Rouse and you are listening to the podcast One Life Emotional Currency. Your values are what guide the day to day decisions of your life. The problem that most people face is that they do not know what their values are. What are your values? If you have a hard time describing what those values are, then there is a very good chance that you're making decisions based on something that's not guiding you towards the life you want. So let's ask that question. What are your values? What do you value? You might have difficulty thinking of what those values are, but the best way to figure out what your values are are to look at what you don't value. Those things that trigger you. Maybe in other people, maybe you see someone cheating on exam, an exam, and then you're like, you know what? Oh my God, I can't believe that they're cheating. Then honesty is one of your values. Or perhaps someone who stays in one place and you're like, I don't know how they can do that, live their entire life in one area, would now ever go down and see the world. Then maybe freedom and exploration is a value of yours. So by looking at the things that you don't that are in conflict with your value, it actually will shine a spotlight on the things you value. So let's dive into values. So what do values do anyways? Your values in how I take them are this like your essence, right? It's like who you are. When you're in line with your values, you are happy, life is good. But when you are not aligned with your values, life can be hard. You, you, you feel out of sync. But where you are now and where you want to be can be too completely set about different sets of values. I was listening to a podcast from Simon Sinek and he was stating values. So saying something like courage, freedom, honesty, they don't really give you any kind of emotional trigger. There's no, like, oh, my God. Yeah, this is really jazzing me up. Wow. Courage. Yeah, courage. But when you describe it in the way of using it as a verb, saying courage to take action in spite of fear, or honesty to always do the right thing. Now all of a sudden, there's something tangible. There's like meat there. And now you know exactly how you have to act, you know, because you're being guided by that, by the phrase, I use this in my own life. So courage was one that was always, I have impact, charity, courage, freedom. And it might be honesty or growth was my last one. So five of them I picked, but they didn't really have. When I had. I have them on my phone, looking at them, they. Yeah, I see them. They look like pretty words, but they didn't really grab me. They didn't really act. Take. Make me respond any differently. I started thinking about now, like, all right, well, courage, acting despite fear. Right, okay. So acting even when there's fear there, moving forward. Anyways, when I would have these conversations, when I would have, you know, I was on the phone with a mortgage broker, and he asked me to submit some documents to him. So I'm like, all right, well, looking. I'm, you know, I've submitted documents once for mortgage broker, but it's been a while. So I was, gary, well, what am I? You know, how do I submit? Do I just like, do I have to cover my account? My account numbers? How do I do this? And I was looking online, they're like, oh, if you're going to submit your things, you have to do it on a platform that's secure. You don't do it through email because your. Your information could compromise. I'm like, oh. So I emailed him like, hey, you know, do you have a secure upload? And he's like, well, no, you know, my. My email is secure, which I doubt. And then he's. Then he said, and my. Or we can do Dropbox. That. Neither of those sound very secure to me. Right. Doesn't sound like they're encrypted in any way. So it was. Took courage. I was hesitant to ask him even. Even, like, push back and say, hey, you know what? I'm not going to send him via email. Do you have a secure way of doing it? Now I'm gonna have to send another email saying, you know what this is. I'm not comfortable with sending my information this way. I either will do it in person or find a secure way of doing it without having conscious courage. And what it Meant to be courageous at the forefront of my mind. The chances are I probably would have folded and be like, oh, well, okay, if you say it's safe, all right, all right. And I would have sent it, right? Because there would have been some internal pressure just based on habitual living and childhood experience and stuff that like. Or like, all right, conform, do the right thing, Obey orders in a way. Right. But once you check in, you see, you sense what you're feeling inside, and you act out of that with courage. Now all of a sudden, you've chosen a new response. Same thing with regard to taking steps in my business, there was emails and people I had to contact you that can move me forward. But I was nervous about what. What that next step might entail, Right? It's. It's change. It's stepping outside the box. And that could be scary. But then when I tuned in, I'm like, all right, what am I really feeling right now? It's me. I'm feeling fear. Okay, well, what do I do when I feel fear? You act in spite of that. So I took the courage and I sent the email out anyways and I made those contacts. There was an event I was going to go to where I'm like, oh, God, I got to go all the way up to Massachusetts for this beverage event. Yeah. The intention is to meet people in the industry, and. But I don't really want to go up there. And what. What it really was is I didn't want to be in a new environment, and it was a difference. It was stepping outside that box. So I said, all right, what's really going on here? Yeah, okay, I see. I see a fear. And then I booked in it, and I'm going to go up there now. So you, by making your. Your value a verb, gives it more power. But how about the value of the future you? Right? Because the values that got you to where you are might need to be different in order to get you where you want to go. And so it's important to say, well, who do you want to become? Right? To picture this perfect life that you want, right? This your ideal life. If you were to picture it and see yourself clearly, like, what are you wearing? How are you standing? What is your disposition? Where are you living? You know, how much money is in your bank account? When you build this picture and you make it vivid and clear, you ask yourself the question, okay, well, what do my values have to be in order to get there? Sometimes it's not necessarily a changing values, but a ranking of values. Right. So if you value something like freedom as your number one and, you know, growth as your. As your bottom, now all of a sudden now, like, you know, or yeah, we'll say growth now all of a sudden there's a conflict or you want to move forward in your business, but no, freedom is all the way up here. And all of a sudden you're like, well, I'm not going to do that because that might, you know, that might cut my freedom back. And I'm not about that, so let's cancel it. So you have to know. All right, well, what do your values need to be? And before I go, I'm going to leave you with one more tidbit. I was listening to a podcast and they were again, it seems like when I get lessons in life, they all seem to come at the same time. So I was listening, I was reading about finding your purpose, passion and values came up. And then all of a sudden, all these things literally just flood into my life about values. Not even intentionally looking for them. They just come in. So I'm like, okay, I get the message. And it was talking about how your values, whenever you find something that gives you meaning through your values, you do it. That is one of the reasons why I'm here right now talking to you is because this podcast speaks to my desire to contribute, my desire for you to live your best life by aligning with yourself and what you really, really want. Because I do believe, you know, I believe that life every day is a blessing and that every day should be lived because not a single day should be taken for granted. Right? We don't know when our time is going to come. So why put anything off? Why put off the things you know that are going to bring you joy? Why put off that trip that's going to put a smile on your face and create memories that you'll remember for the rest of your life. So that is my tidbit. This is really just a rant on value. So I hope you enjoyed this podcast. If you did, please give it a thumbs up. If you like this, share it with somebody.
