Donny Raus explains how the people around you shape what you do. He started a podcast, competed in a physique contest, and wrote a book because of who he surrounded himself with. Your environment either pulls you forward or holds you back.
Hi, guys. My name is Donnie Rouse, and you are listening to the podcast One Life. Do you ever feel it is difficult to get inspired? If you want to get inspired, there's one simple thing you have to do. Get around inspiring people. I came. I've heard this quote from 2013, when I went to my first Tony Robbins seminar, and he said, you want to get around? You want to be inspired? Get around inspiring people. Change your environment. And it didn't really make any sense to me at the time until it came full circle. This past year, I was sitting with one of my friends, my good friend Cynthia, and we were talking about. She was telling me how she was going to start a podcast. And upon hearing her start this podcast, I got really inspired. Oh, that sounds awesome. You know what? I'm gonna start one, too. And because of her action, because she was inspired to do, she inspired me to do it. And the same thing was with my physique contest. One of my friends, we were swimming in the gym pool, and I saw them, and I was like, my God, what have you done? Your physique looks amazing. I think it was like maybe six months earlier, he was a twig, and he came by, and all of a sudden he had this giant chest. His shoulders were built out, and he had gotten a trainer, and he was going to compete in a physique contest. So when he challenged me by making some little snark comment, I decided that I was going to do the same. Different type of inspiration, the one I just mentioned, but nevertheless inspiration. And then most currently, I started writing a book. And it was because one of my good friends decided she was going to write a book. And I was kind of hesitant because I'm like, oh, my God. It seems a little. I was a little intimidated. And then a few other people chimed in. They're like, oh, you know, yeah, we'll do this book by certain date. I was like, you know what? I'm gonna do a book. And I've been writing the book for the last two weeks. And it's just crazy when you. Like, I never would have thought, one, that I was gonna compete. Two, that I would have this podcast that I've been posting consistently on for the last. I don't even know how many other months. And I was thinking about. Then I came, I was thinking about the. Wow, look at what I'm doing this year. I am, you know, the podcast, the book. I'm creating an online course. I'm doing all these. The travels, all these things that I'm doing. And I was looking, well, wow, what. What was the catalyst? What made me do all the. Like, start doing all these things? And it came around to the people I was surrounding myself with. They were the ones that were inspiring me to do new things, explore new terrains. And it was all. It was just a matter of having all these minds come together. Then I also looked on the opposite side. I looked at times when I feel disempowered, where I don't want to do anything. Who am I around then? It's the same thing. It's a different. The people you are around, you will tend to. There's a. There's a quote. It's like, if you want to look at. If you want to know about someone, look at their five closest friends. And then if you take those five friends, you average their income, you average their body weight, you'll roughly have the same. You know, you'll tell. It'll roughly be the same for that person. And it's so true, because environment is such a powerful influence on us. And so as the same with inspiration, your environment is what's gonna determine or what influences how inspired you feel. So when you're around inspiring people, you can't help but to feel inspired. I love going into New York City for that reason because there's so many people. It's like having idea sex. Because you start talking to someone, all of a sudden, like, ideas are shooting off. You're like, oh, that's cool. I was. A couple weeks ago, I was down in New York City and. And I was speaking with a guy who was playing piano in Washington Square Park. I was mentioning how I like classical music and how I wish there was a smaller venue. And he was like, oh, that's interesting. I'm actually trying to do this, you know, create. Open a small venue for classical music. And then he can connect me with one of his friends who was. Works with small businesses. And I still have to reach out for coffee. But nevertheless, like this conversation, you know, he's. He was passionate about doing classical music and has his own thing going on. And it just. That this spreading of ideas that just inspires you to be, oh, well, maybe I could help you with this. Oh. And they're seeing what your aspirations are, and they're like, oh, maybe I could help you with that. And all of a sudden, now you're feeding each other. You know, you're feeding off each other's energy and you're helping one another. It's a beautiful thing. Really, really beautiful thing. But then look at where you lack inspiration. I have some friends where, you know, some friends that I distance myself from because I couldn't help. Whenever I was around them, I just felt this, like, blanket of negativity. And it was just. It was more an outlook on the world and like this very cynical way of how the world worked. And whenever I was with them, I didn't feel good. So as a result, I distanced myself from them and I feel much better as a result. But that if there's the key to this podcast, the key to this episode right here is just be conscious of the people you surround yourself with, because ultimately that's what you become. Because we try to fit in, so we tend to conform to the environment that we're in. It's just, it's. It's a survival instinct. Even if it's not your true. Even if it's not what you believe, you tend to adapt. Adapt different beliefs, different views of the world based on those around you. And it's scary because it can creep in and all of a sudden you don't even know how you got there. Now you have these beliefs that were never yours to begin with. That is it. My friends, if there's one thing, I like leaving you guys with homework assignments because I feel like if you actually do, even if you just listen to me say it, you'll probably come away with some benefit to it. So look at the environments that you're in. How do they make you feel? Look at your home environment, look at your church, look at your school, look at the friends at school, look at your business. How does it make you feel? And is it in line with who you are? If you're not feeling good about the. If you're with these certain people and you notice that you don't feel good, that's a good. That's a good indicator that you need to change. Or if you're feeling uninspired, maybe it's time you just kind of expand your horizons and go into a different scene. That is it, guys. Have an amazing week. Thank you so much for tuning in. If you have any questions, you can shoot me a message at Donny D O N N Y R A U S via Instagram.
