Donny Raus walks through how he chose an apartment in Miami by listening to his gut instead of logic, then guides you through a reflective exercise to make decisions that match what you actually feel.
Hi, guys. My name is Donnie Rouse, and you are listening to the podcast One Life Feel the Difference. How do you know when you're making the correct decision? Is this something you apply logic to? Do other people have to tell you that you've made the right decision? Or is it something that you feel intrinsically? By the end of this podcast, my. My intention, my goal is for you to check inside first to see, well, what is the right decision for me? What am I being called to do? What is my heart telling me is the right decision? I made the decision about a month and a half ago to move down to Miami, Florida. So a month and a half ago, I was here and I started looking for apartments right away. At the time, I had met a friend, my friend Parag, who's from India, living in Seattle. He was here temporarily, and we decided that we would be roommates in our search for finding the right apartment. We went to a bunch of different areas in Miami, starting at south beach, where we were, we went over to Brickell, walked all around Brickell, really like that. Then went to Coral Gables, Coconut Grove, and then eventually back to Brickell. As we were making our way around this loop, nothing was really calling to us. We weren't feeling like called, like, well, this is where I want to be. But at the very, very end, as we were taking the bus from Coconut Grove over to Brickell, when we got off that bus, he and I looked at each other and we said, this is it. You may have heard that the. There's a quote out there I've seen, like, memes about. It says, if it's not a hell yeah, it's a hell no. Well, this, at the moment, this was a hell's yes. Fast forward a month. So I went back home, I sold my home that I had with my brother, and I came back down to Florida. This time, my friend Parag was no longer there. He actually didn't get his renewed visa and had to go to Canada. So now I'm here, I'm looking with a new friend that I met, my friend Fatih from Turkey. So we are looking for apartments and we have different criteria, like, I'm pretty much free to go anywhere I want. But Fatih needed to be in the south beach area because he was doing a lot of work for restaurants and bars and as a result needed to be nearby. So while he was working, he had a full plate of full time schedule for work. It was up to me to look for the apartments. And he said, you know what, listen, I trust you Whatever you choose, I'll go with. So as I was looking around, I was trying to figure out, well, where do I want to be? Like, there's two different energies. You have the east coast, which is all the partying on Collins in Washington. And then as you slowly move west, it slowly gets a little bit calmer. So looking at apartments, I also had another option. Someone I had met online had a beautiful apartment in Brickell in the W Hotel building. And in this W Hotel, there's the residential side, which is called the Icon. And the Icon shares all the amenities of the W Hotel. So you could only imagine as to how grand and how beautiful they were. I said, all right, let me go look. Let me go look at this apartment. I went to look at the apartment, and it was stunning. The pool is an Olympic sized pool. The. The gym was pristine, had all the necessary equipment. I wouldn't have to leave the apartment. And my room had. It was a bunk bed. It was actually. He was the person who was renting it to me. It was his aunt's place, and I would be renting it for several months. And it was a bunk bed that had, like, pictures of his nieces and nephews. That wasn't ideal, but you had this most amazing. This most amazing balcony that faced east. So right across was the water was Brickell Gate, and in between these buildings was a clear path to watch the sunrise. So my mind was going like, oh, my God, this would be amazing. Add to that, I walked outside and there was this path along the water that just seemed very tranquil, very slow. There was this giant tent with all these different food trucks around it. And I was thinking to myself, well, I could really get used to this. And this is like, this is beautiful living. I came back to south beach and I was a little bit kind of like feeling nervous about sharing it with my friend. I was like, well, is this kind of. Is this a, like a bad move on my part? Because, like, this is calling me. And, you know, I was talking with my friend about moving in together, but then I also said, well, we know not really, because we have different needs. You know, he needed this, I wanted this. And so I had shed that. And at some point, I actually went over to Collins, and again, there was all that intense energy, and I was ready to call it off altogether. I was ready to say, you know what? I'm done looking. I'm choosing somewhere further away. He can stay here. That's how I felt. But then I had made an appointment with a realtor to look at one more apartment in Miami Beach. When I went to look at this apartment, I was like, I had very low expectations for. I was like, I'm probably not gonna like it. Let me, let me just go. Anyways, I went there at first. The. The realtor showed me the courtyard. It was this beautiful Spanish looking courtyard with a fountain in there and a nice stone table in the center. Immediately, I started imagining having a beer. Like, long day's work, him coming home, us just socializing, having a beer, sitting in the courtyard, talking. When I went to the apartment, the apartment reminded me of like hostels I had stayed at in Europe. In other apartments that I had seen in Europe, they had these red cabinets. And the apartment itself just felt very cozy. Like the. One of the bedrooms had like this beautiful oil painting of a guy in a boat and there wasn't a whole lot of sunlight. But again, it was cozy. And the other room was like, had like these two chairs where you could lounge on like the same size bed. All in all, like, it was cozy. But compared to the, the room at the Icon. Like if you, if we were looking at what, like if we're comparing amenities and look at the, the apartment, it couldn't compare, right? I mean, logically, everyone would say, well, what, are you kidding me? If you have the chance, if you have a choice between that and this, go with the icon. But then here's what happened and the reason I might. It might kind of sound like I'm going off on a ramp, but there's. Stay with me. There's a reason I'm telling you this. When I left that apartment, South Beach, I walked out and I felt this calm effect over me. I said to myself, all right, this is it. This is the one we were supposed to get. I called my friend Fatih. I said, fati, I found the apartment. He's like, well, you know what? I trust you. If you believe that this is it, then you have my word. And I told the realtor, I was like, all right, we'll take it. And so why I'm telling you this is that because logic would say, go with the icon at the W Hotel. And if I were to ask anyone else showing them the pictures, they would also say that to make that same decision. But what I felt inside when I checked in was something completely different. When I checked in with myself immediately after seeing that apartment, I knew that was it and I didn't have to look anymore. Fast forward now. It's been one day. That was yesterday where we made the offer and everything Else we didn't get that apartment. But it's a lesson. It's a lesson to check in. It's a lesson to go with your gut and to ignore all the outside influence, all the things that other people should say that you should have, you should want, and to tune in yourself and say, okay, well, what is it that I want? And go with that. So I'm going to run you through a quick process right now. And this is something that I'd used with other people I'd met who were going through something. I'll tell you another really, really brief story. I would speak with people. I was speaking with a girl. We'll say Mrs. T. We were. She was talking about wanting to move to Florida. Not really sure what to do. I'm really paraphrasing here, But I had her. I said, okay, well, let's do this. Close your eyes, and I want you to do this right now. Think of a decision that you have to make. Think of something that's been, like, kind of plaguing your mind for the last week, months, years. Sometimes, right? Sometimes we hold on to not making a decision that we literally will hold onto it for years. Get that one thing in your head. The next thing I want you to do is put your hands one on top of the other and put it over your heart. Close your eyes. Take a deep breath in. Slowly release. Take another deep breath in. And slowly release. One more time, take a deep breath in and slowly release. Now I want you to recall that thing that you just said, that decision that you had to make. I know what you think you have to do, but if you were listening to your heart, if you tuned into your heart, what would your heart tell you? Again, if you tuned into your heart, what feels like the right decision? What is your heart guiding you to make? If you didn't have to please anyone else, if no one else was going to be influenced, if, regardless of the decision you made, everyone else would be happy for you, what is your heart calling you to do? That is the decision you have to make. You see, it's so easy to get caught into thinking that, like, oh, I'm acting from my heart, when you're really acting from the brain. And going back to that story I just mentioned about Mrs. T. I'll tell you. If you want to know the key. Differentiate. If you want to know the thing that's going to identify and tell you where you're calling or where you're acting from, it's in your words. Your heart is going to tell you, I feel your brain is going to say, I think so. If you're ever talking to a family friend and they're trying to make a decision, see where they're making that decision from. Have them feel their heart and then have them verbalize. They're saying, my heart is telling me or I feel that this is it, then that's the decision their instinct, their gut is trying to tell them to make. If they start going around in circles saying, well, you know, I think then that means they're in their head. And there's another saying that's very powerful. If you're in your head, you're dead. Meaning any decision we make out of fear is the wrong decision and we want to make the right decision. We want to act from our heart because that is the only way to fulfillment. That is the only way we're going to enjoy love and live our life. Guys, thank you so much for tuning into this. I feel like it's kind of going off a little bit, but I know I feel very, very good about how I narrowed it down to kind of get you to check in and check in with your heart.
