Donny Raus on why you need to stop pretending you don't have time. He walks through how to audit where your hours actually go, then cut the stuff that doesn't matter so you can do what does.
Hi, guys. My name is Donny Rouse, and you are listening to the podcast One Life. Finding Time. What would you do if you had more time in your day? How would you spend it? See, our time, where we put our focus, where we put our time tells us a lot about what our priorities are in life. But very few people actually take the time to do some time accounting to say, okay, well, where am I putting that focus? Where am I devoting the time? And do I feel good about the time I'm spending in this particular area? I was wait. Sometimes when I wake up in the morning, I get like this. This frantic mode, like there's not enough time in the day. As a result of this feeling, I skip over things that really, really matter, such as doing journaling exercises or doing my morning reading. Because when I do these two particular activities, I find that my mind gets really, really focused on the things that I want rather than what I'm reacting to in my day and the things that I have to do. So it makes me a little bit more like, outcome focused as opposed to action focused and just running through the daily routines that the business requires. My coffee business. And so I found myself in this habit. I was like, well, this is stupid. I'm spending my days, I'm going frantically, and then there's no fulfillment in the day. This can't be right. And then also when I would go to the gym, so I would go to workout, and sometimes I would go to workout later in the day. Now I'm starting to go earlier, which it feels like it extends my day out even more. And then I have more time. I would go to the gym, and one of my fitness goals was more flexibility in my hip area. But what does that require me to do just from doing weights? Weights don't really loosen your shoulders, give you more elasticity and more flexibility. If anything, they tighten you up. So I'm always pushing with heavier and heavier weights, but never taking the time to actually stretch out those muscles and loosen up certain parts of my body and the hips were one of my priorities for me. So sitting on the mat, I'm sitting there doing some hip stretches, and I'm like, I don't have time, don't have time. I have to leave. I have to go home. I have other things to do. So I would skip those hip exercises, those hip stretches. What do you think the result is that I've gotten as a result of skipping those exercises? It is not improved hip function. Do you have those areas? What are those areas in your life? Where you say you want something, but then you do the exact opposite. And here's where it gets real, right? Because we say that we don't have the time to do something that we know is going to be very beneficial for our lives. But then we'll go spend a half an hour looking at Instagram stories, responding to Facebook posts, reading some magazine about gossip or whatever it is, or even hours turning on the news. This is the worst thing for you, Promise, you know? So where are you deluding yourself? Where are you saying that? What are you saying that you want? And where are you saying? Where are you saying that you don't have the time? Where are you actually putting your energy? Because where you put your energy, if you're putting your energy there, it's robbing you of your life. So what I want you to do in this episode is just to get real with yourself about where you're putting your energy. Where are you putting your time? So the assignment is this. I want you to first just start, well, what is it? What are the things that you say you want but you don't have enough time to do? It could be like taking the time to play with your child. It could be taking the time to journal, to write that book that you've always wanted to do or learn how to crochet. I don't know what it is, but whatever it is, write that on the list right now. Next, what do you do that robs you of that time? And this is where you're going to have to be real with yourself, because you'll never get the real answer right. If you spend an hour on Instagram looking through other people's stories and then comparing yourself, you're probably not going to tell yourself that because you don't want to admit it because it's going to make you feel bad. But it's important that you do put that down. And even if you like, you know, you shortened a little bit, we all know. But be true, be honest with yourself, because this is where you get some of that time back. Where do you put your time? Do you put it on Instagram? Do you watch series of your favorite TV show where instead of just watching the one and getting that, you know, that, that satiation of watching one episode you've been watching, you watch like 15 of them. I'd been there and it doesn't feel good. Yeah, in the moment, like I'm. After a while, it's like declining marginal utility. Like, you know, like a good, like seven episodes in. I'm like Ah, man, I just spent all that time watching this and knew I probably should have stopped after one. But what is it? It's important that you become conscious of where you're wasting your time. So this way we could flip it around and we could actually take some of that time back and put it towards the things that really matter. So after you've done that time counting, like, you just put down the list, put the amount of time that you spend on an average in each of those categories, and then lastly, I want you to tally up that time. How much time do you waste? And I wouldn't even say waste, because even all these things are good in moderation, right? Like, I love Japanese manga. I spend time watching that because it makes me feel good, right? I get enjoyment out of it, but too much time there is not beneficial to me. So it's not the town play, say, well, it's bad to do these things. No, it's not bad to do these things. It's bad to do when it's at the cost of your happiness, when it's at the cost of your relationship with your family, your friends, when it's at the cost of your dreams, the goals you have, like the person you want to become, that's when it becomes a liability. So when you have that tally up, I want you to tally up that time that you spend. You could break it down. Like, instead of doing a week, you could do a day, but it works for doing a week. What if you were able to get that time back? How would you spend it? How can you fulfill the things you did in the first question, Things that you wanted to do but didn't have the time? And then the last question is this. If you were able to complete the things you did in the first question, how would that make you feel? What else would you do? What else would be possible in life where after completing those things, what. What else would it add to your life? What else would you want to do after that? Your life is based on emotion. Emotion is where you put your focus, your energy, your time. So if you got anything from this episode, I want you to just be conscious of where you're putting your time. Because time is emotion or no, time is related to emotion. And your emotions are your life. So make sure you're doing the things that are going to leave you fulfilled. That is all I've got for you guys today. I hope you enjoyed this episode. If you did, please give it a review on Apple Podcasts or Spotify. I believe you can do reviews. There as well and share it with your friends who you feel like they need to listen to this and do the exercise. And I wish you guys a beautiful, healthy, passionate, full life. God bless and I will see you again soon.
