Donny Raus argues you should act first and adjust later, not wait for perfect conditions. He uses buying noise-canceling headphones as an example: you test them, they don't work right, you tweak the settings. Same with goals. Start now, figure it out as you go.
Hi, guys. My name is Donnie Rouse and you are listening to the podcast One Life. Fire. Ready, aim. I think one of the reasons why most people fail to even take that first step towards their dreams is that they're afraid of failing. As a result of that fear, they sit on the sidelines sometimes their entire lives. I've kind of been impulsive for a good part of my life, and it served me. And not in some, in some ways and others. Sometimes it's just the taking the action that actually pushes me forward. Because as a result of taking that action, right or wrong, it gives me contrast. So now I know I'm like, okay, well, I don't want to do that again. Let me realign, let me adjust and figure out what it is that I do want. Because we're taught to say, ready, aim, fire. Okay, let's see. Ready ourselves. Is this what I want? Yes, it's what I want. Fire. But some of us are waiting our entire lives for the ready, aim. And never after fire. And the approach of firing and then getting your aim ready again and then firing again is just the approach of getting feedback and saying, okay, this is the action I took. What did I like? What didn't I like? What do I need to change going forward? So the only thing you get from taking that action is more clarity. You get clarity through the contrast. To give you a simplified example of this, I decided that one day I was going to purchase noise canceling headphones. So when I got the noise canceling headphones I purchased, my first set was Bose. This is going to end up turning to like a product review, but I purchased the Bose set of headphones and I noticed that there was this, like, there was this feeling of pressure. I felt like I was on a plane. I mean, I welcome that feeling any other time. But while I'm listening to music and being in my room, I'd prefer to be up on a plane. And to have this. This intense pressure would often leave me kind of feeling a little bit lightheaded and like, pressure in the eyes. These were the Bose 35s. And as a result of getting that, I was like, well, you know what, something's off here. You know, there has to be a different experience, something that's not going to give me that pressure there. I then proceeded to buy a couple pairs of Sony headphones. I got the WH910NS, I think that's the name. And I got the WH1000XM3S, which is what I'm currently using. And I tried Those on, and the sound quality was better and they were a little bit more comfortable. The noise canceling was amazing. Well, not as good, but, like, I didn't have that pressure buildup in the air and had just a lot more functionality to it. So I ended up returning the Bose and I returned the. The. The cheaper Sony brand and went up going with the expensive brand because it just, it hit all my needs. So what I'm trying to say here is like, I could have just said, oh, you know what? And this is actually, to be honest with you, I was actually waiting. I was like, you know what? I really don't want to spend that much money. Like 300. They're like $300 on a set of headphones. I'll just wait until they go on sale. And I was waiting and waiting, waiting. I'd been wanting to buy a pair of these headphones probably for a good couple years, but I never took action on it. And then one day, I don't even know what actually, you know, sparked the interest in them again. I was looking at the headphones, I was like, you know what? This is stupid. First of all, I'm always working on my computer. Oh, I remember. I remember I was trying to block out some noise. I was thinking, this is stupid because, you know, when I'm doing my work, when I'm roasting, when I'm brewing espresso, like, I could use these headphones. They would come in use and they would more than pay for themselves because they. They would help me concentrate more. And as a result of that, I decided to go out and get that first pair. After getting that first pair, I realized that those weren't the right ones for me. And I proceeded to try other pairs until I found one with the features I wanted. That. That just felt right. And those are the ones I kept, to be honest. Just for the sake of completing the headphones review, these WH1000XM3s are going to go back and I'm going to get the WH1000XM4S, because the microphone on these for calls horrendous. Okay, back to the podcast. So you can look at this example with headphones and you can say, all right, well, how does that relate to life? It does in so many levels. Going back to what I started with is that when you make the decision, even if it's a shitty decision, you start to get contrast. You start to understand and get a clear picture of what it is you don't want as well as what it is that you want. And as a result of that, now you have a new action you can take. So then you take another action and then it's like, okay, this is what I got. You know what? I really don't like this. This is what I really want. And then you adjust again and then finally you reach the holy grail. You reached your end goal and everything is perfect. And it was because all those things you did, all those actions you had to take, all those recalibration, those re aiming that got you to where you are. So if I'm going to leave you with one message, this is actually a pretty short. I'm looking at the time right now. This is a pretty short podcast, but I think it's like direct and to the point. It was all about the headphones analogy. If I'm going to give you anything, it's just to start just to take some kind of action, any action, but figure out somewhat of what you want and just do it. Because as a result of taking those action, you'll start to get new inputs, you'll start to get new insights, you'll start to talk to new people, you'll start to build passion, you start to build momentum. And that momentum is what is going to kind of snowball until it gets to this giant, huge snowball that you see like rolling down the cartoons, like, you know, that envelops everything that it touches. And then you'll be unstoppable. So if we're going to do this right, think of a goal. I always leave you with homework. Think of a goal or something you wanted to start. What is one step that you can do tonight? Not tomorrow, not the day after, but tonight, to lock in that step or to lock in that action. Maybe it's signing up for a webinar, maybe it is buying a product for like a microphone because you want to start podcasting. Whatever it is, do that step tonight and next. Well, I mean, next, just let it go out and think of what you have to do next. What's the next step for you to do now? And then take that step and just keep taking the next thing and the next thing. Don't look too far out because that's going to screw your mind up and then it'll kind of put you in paralysis. Just think of what is the next step after that, the next step after that. Guys, I hope you enjoyed this episode. I didn't plan on doing a headphone review, but hopefully if you plan on getting headphones, you will use this to your benefit. Hope you enjoyed this episode.
