Donny Rouse shares three actionable steps to break free from stagnation and regain momentum in work, relationships, and personal goals. He draws on his own experiences and journaling practices to show how to reconnect with your ambitions and start taking consistent action again.
Most people spend their entire life stressed without ever giving a single thought as to what it is they really want or what's important to them. See, I'm here to cut through all that noise, connecting you to yourself and the life that you were meant to live. I used to slave away at a corporate job that I hated, but I broke through the social norms and pursued my passion. As a result, I own my own coffee company. I'm espresso sommelier, and I get to travel the world. You too can live a life that you love, but it starts with getting clear about what you want. It starts with a new decision. I'm your host, Donnie Rouse, and you're listening to the podcast One Life. Get your mojo. Momentum is required for anything you want to achieve in life. Think of anything great. What did it take to get there? It took repetitive action. It took this feeling like it was possible and that you were making progress and moving in that direction. Now imagine if you had just taken one action and then all of a sudden just stopped. And I know if you've done this before in the past. I know I've done this before in the past, many times in the past, where I start to take an action and all of a sudden I don't follow up that action with consistent action or another big step. And all of a sudden all these amazing feelings that I had felt now all of a sudden disappear. And just what I want to tell you is that just as easy as you can lose momentum, you can get it back. And I'm going to tell you three easy steps. How to get back on that train, how to get back on that rocket. So this way you could start to feel great about life and that life is happening for you. So I woke up this morning, I went to sleep last night just journaling on my day. And yesterday was kind of. And I know it could be hard on myself here. I would say yesterday was kind of a wash in the sense that I didn't do a whole lot, but to give myself a little bit of grace. I mean, the entire week I'm literally going nonstop. And I could give myself shit for not taking. For taking a day off when it's completely ridiculous. But one of the things I did was I was journaling just a little bit. I was putting some thought into the lessons of the day as well as how I wanted that day to unfold like today, meaning like tomorrow, which is today to unfold come the morning. And I went to sleep right on one o' clock last night, which is later than I want to go to sleep. And I found my eyes opening up at 5:30. And in my mind I'm like, all right, damn, it's 5:30. What do I do? Do I get up and start my day or do I just sleep in? Because I try to get eight hours of sleep a night. Don't always. I'm not always successful in it, but I try to do that. So knowing that how valuable my mornings are and how much I enjoy the quiet and stillness, I decided that I was going to get up and if I needed to take a nap, I could do that later in the day. So I woke up and I just took my journal outside and I started journaling about momentum. Lately I had been feeling like I was just feeling overwhelmed with all of the different projects that I have on and that there was no time for me. And that right there is a shitty incantation, because when you start incanting that and saying there's no time, now all of a sudden you're stressing yourself out. The truth is, there's always time for what's important to you. So I was looking at my life and I was looking at all the projects that were important to me, and I was just starting to apply purpose onto it. Which brings me to step number one. Know what it is. Connect to that ambition. Know what it is you're going after. So as I was journaling, I was thinking about the One Life blueprint and like in donnyrouse.com and I was thinking about Rouse Coffee. When I was thinking about like the One Life, I was starting to conjure up images of my own one Life traveling around the world. Because that was my journaling prompt was like my ambitions and what I want out of life. And that kind of coincided with why I do this podcast in the first place. So I started journaling that. And so all of the purpose started coming into my mind. And that did the same for my coffee company. About like, you know, giving people time to sit down with that cup of coffee and to really just savor the moment. Right? So purpose check. First. First one first step fulfilled. Like, connected to the ambition. The next step was to identify the action steps needed, right? Because it's so easy to take actions or not to take any new action, right? To just keep going with the wheel and doing the same thing over and over and not getting very far. And I have been taking small steps again. I could. I could be very critical of myself. I've been taking small steps, but I know that there are more important steps that I could Be prioritizing in order to move forward faster, to grow faster, and to achieve the ambitions that I have. But I would prioritize some of those repetitive tasks because it feels good to get it over. And sometimes it just feels good to tell everybody you're always busy, right? But it's bullshit. And what it's doing, it's keeping you from the life that you were meant to live. So I was looking at this, right? And I was thinking, all right, well, what do I want to. What is the impact I want to have? How do I want to show up in the world? Who do I want to be? Like, I want to be an influencer for good, for living passionate, a passionate life. The task that came out of that was doing my email list, right? And connecting with the people that I am meant to serve here. And I had been putting off doing emails for both my RouseCoffee as well as the donnyrouse.com because I was just like. But it just takes so much time, you know, like logging into activecampaign, which is what I use for my business. Excuse me. And I dreaded the thought of just starting. But the truth of the matter is, is that I love it, like, when I come in here, when I do this podcast, when I'm sending those emails out, that is one of the things that actually fills me up and gives me purpose. That was actually one of the other intentions I did on my journaling exercise. Like, what do I want to feel today? I want to feel purpose. I want to feel like that what I'm doing matters. And part of that was expressing exactly why I'm here, to try to inspire and motivate you to go after the dreams that you have. So that was one of the intentions. And then realizing that I'd been putting this thing off, but by. By connecting with that and taking the action, which is what I'm doing right now. Step number three, right? First was identifying the ambition. Secondly was doing the. Identifying the action and taking the action. I'm sorry, we're stopped. Step number two and then three is blocking time. Either every day or, at the very minimum, every week. Blocking and committing to a block of time that you are going to commit to working on whatever it is that you're going after, because nothing is going to happen without that consistent action. And not only that, when you're not taking consistent action, you may feel like you are alive, and then all of a sudden you stop. And then those feelings that you had felt, now you don't even remember them. And pretty soon the life that you envision for yourself just becomes not even a dream, right? It becomes a distant memory with no emotional feeling and just a void. If you're going to live a passionate life, you have to connect to the ambition. You have to connect to the things that feed you. So going back over the three steps that I just mentioned, one was identify what is your ambition? Like, what do you want out of life? What are you moving and working towards? Secondly, identify in action, like, not the bullshit actions that we tend to take, right? And I say we because I find myself being guilty of that over and over. And I constantly have to remind myself as to what I am moving towards and what actions are going to get me there. Because often it's the actions that you fear and those are the ones that you put off, but also those are the ones that are going to give you the maximum thrust. Those are the ones that are going to move you towards that end goal. And then lastly, commit to block time. Block time is just saying, okay, well, every week, every Monday and Friday, I am going to spend the first two hours of my day before I do anything else, I'm going to spend those first two hours working on X. And as a result of doing that and having already identified the important tasks that are going to move you forward towards that, now all of a sudden you start moving towards it and you start to feel better. And as a result of feeling better, you start to take bigger actions and you start to feel more confident. And pretty soon, there you go, right? You got your mojo and you've got your ambition, you've got your goal. And I want to end this with one thing. Time. It's so easy to stress out about time. Going back to my journaling this morning, I was thinking about time and I'm thinking about like the, I was thinking about the. My growth plans for my cold room Nespresso. And you know, then last night I got into a rabbit hole looking at, looking at financial markets, where the dollar's headed and all these things. And all of a sudden I found myself going into this space where I'm like, oh my God, you know, the timing, like, I have no control over the timing. When is this going to happen? And what it was doing was it was just stressing me out when the reality is that there's no one's putting, no one's putting like a timetable, say, Donna, you have to have this thing done by this time or you have to have cold roaming commercialized and national buy in three years. No one's Giving me that deadline, right? I could give the deadline myself. No one's giving me that deadline. And do I want that to happen. Is it good to have those time goals right, those time targets? Of course it is, right. Because it gets you to strategize and formulate what actions need to be taken in order to reach that goal. Otherwise, sometimes you drag out your goals and your goals. Something that could take a year ends up taking 20 years. And there's no hate there because it's all on your schedule. It's all what you want. When I looked at everything that was going on, I'm like, well, I could stress out about it, but I'm also. There are points in my life where I want more momentum. I want to make bigger progress, but I'm also happy living the way I am and being purposeful in my actions and enjoying the process and not being so stressed out about having it should have been done yesterday because that takes me out of the vortex, that makes me not feel good. And as a result, I don't do anything. I don't show up here for you. I don't, you know, it takes me out of the loop. So we want you to constantly be plugged in and one of the ways of doing that is just removing the time stress that you are putting on yourself. So that is it for today.
