Donny Rouse on living fully and playing all out. He talks about balancing work with rest, chasing what matters, and enjoying the journey instead of waiting for some future payoff.
Most people spend their entire life stressed without ever giving a single thought as to what it is they really want or what's important to them. See, I'm here to cut through all that noise connecting you to yourself and the life that you were meant to live. I used to slave away at a corporate job that I hated, but I broke through the social norms and pursued my passion. As a result, I own my own coffee company. I'm the espresso sommelier, and I get to travel the world. You, too, can live a life that you love, but it starts with getting clear about what you want. It starts with a new decision. I'm your host, Donnie Rouse. You are listening to the podcast One Life. So what's going on, guys? Donny Rouse here. And today I wanted to ask you a little question. What would a different what would your body look like? What would your career look like if you applied 100% of yourself to it? It's a little bit of a triggering question, isn't it? Because when you look back and you think about it, you realize that you haven't been playing full out. At least when I answer those questions, I realized that I wasn't playing full out in these different areas. Some of the areas I was doing really good, like physical body. But then when I asked that question, I'm like, well, yeah, but I haven't been playing full out. So it helps you to get real about yourself as to what you're putting, like, the effort you're putting forth in your life. And the reason I bring this out is because, well, one, we feel good when we max out or like when we grow, when we max out the effort that we put into something. When we don't do that full effort, we don't feel fulfilled. We don't get that joy from doing the very thing it is. And sometimes we can trick ourselves with thinking that we're not supposed to be doing what we're doing, such as a business you're in. But I digress because that's not even where I wanted to go today. The reason that I came on here live is because I wanted to ask you a couple questions. I've been doing a lot of personal development work, both on my life and in my business. And one of the things that I had seen in, like, the different things I attended and been listening to was this idea they're saying, like, you know, moving towards a business. You know, people say, like, give your business 100%. You know, you'll relax afterward. I have a little bit of a different Mentality, I believe that you should relax while you're doing it. Right? Like, so it's not a given, it's not a. It doesn't have to be this 100% in. It could be a give and take. Because if you're given 100% to your business, meaning in your time, right, and you're saying, well, you know, If I give 100% here, hopefully at the end there's going to be this payoff. Hopefully at the end I'll be able to take a step back. But the truth is that 96% of businesses fail, or at least after a certain period. I don't remember the range of time, but most businesses fail. So if you're waiting until this payoff date for you to start enjoying life, then you're deluding yourself. And not even that you're wasting your prime years. You're wasting the best time, the best parts of your life. I was driving home last night after brewing espresso all night, and I was thinking about this. I was thinking about my podcast, One Life, which is probably being changed to live your One Life podcast. And as I was thinking about it, I was like, well, I don't know if I buy into that because there's a cost to everything. Nothing comes without a cost. So it's kind of like, how do you balance that? I think before I would kind of. I was a little bit off balance. I would take off for a month at a time, and then when I would come back to my business, I didn't even know where I left off. And then I would feel like I would spend, like the next couple weeks just kind of getting back into the pace of things. But as I was thinking about that, all right, well, there was this pressure I felt inside of me, like, oh, I have to devote 100% of myself to build this business to. To be this size. And then I could take a little bit of. I could take some time. I could do the thing that I want to do. It's kind of shitty because, like, you're putting all this effort in, you're waiting for a payoff rather than enjoying the time that you're building, enjoying life, period. So I said, well, what is life to me? What is this podcast about? What is my coffee about? And they came down with three things I said. Impact, like making a difference in the world, doing what I love to do. Growth, applying myself, and constantly growing myself. Because, listen, life doesn't get easier. You always have things coming at you. There's always these peaks and valleys and Those valleys are where you grow. So whether you like it or not, change is inevitable. And you have to grow and to feel fulfilled. And the last thing I didn't exactly. It's passion. I didn't really put it this way. I was thinking about experiences and travel and taking the time for the things that your heart wants you to do, the things that bring you joy. We'll call it passion, right? Because that's. If you're not, if you don't have passion in your life, then what is the point of living? I was watching the movie called Two Popes. I think it's called Two Popes and it was one between Cardinal Ratzinger or Pope Ratzinger and Pope. I can't remember the guy from Argentina. I know his papal name, but I can't remember his first name. But anyways, Pope Francis, who's the Pope now in Ratzinger, they were kind of bumped heads. Pope Ratzinger was a very old school pope who kind of like disdained from pleasure, didn't do anything, versus Pope Francis, which was like, you know, he liked soccer, he liked to tango and all these things. And he was saying, well, you know what the essence of what I'm trying to say is? He was saying, well, you know what? This is living. This is why we're here. We're here to enjoy. We're not just here to put our face down in the book and keep it there 100% of the time, because that's not fulfilling. We're here to experience. I hope that little story will in some way inspire you to say, you know what, I've been spending a lot of time here and I need to spend a little bit of time over here. Or I've been spending all the time on my business and I need to lighten up a little bit here and just start having a little bit of fun. There's a thing that I'll do. I'm going to be doing a workshop on the 29th of January of this year, 2022. And I call it the sad test. And I'm not going to get into it now, but if you're interested in even finding it out, just check it out. Go to donnyrouse.com I'll mention this again at the end, but all I wanted you to do is just think about your life, the grand scheme of things, particularly what it is that you want to experience in life. People value experiences more than things. Things they lose. You get something all of a sudden, you get the new Ferrari, you get a dent all of a sudden now it's no longer like the new Ferrari. Now it's this Ferrari with a dent in the fender. So it kind of loses its appeal. But experiences, you have forever experiences will bring you up. They'll give you joy just by thinking of it, and they help you grow. I'm kind of hinting at international travel here, if you haven't noticed. Well, everything will help you grow but travel, that's one of my biggest passions. So that is it. I just want you to kind of take a little microscope or magnifying glass and put it over your life to see where those areas were. You're. You're putting all this time in, but you're not really taking the time to enjoy yourself and time for the things that matter most to you. That is all I've got for you guys today. Likely I will post this. This wasn't intentional to be posted on my podcast, but likely I will do it because I think it was a pretty good rant that people could benefit from. So, guys, thank you so much for watching this, tuning it in. I hope it in some way impacted you and I thank you for tuning in as always, because I know you could realize that you could be watching anything and you're watching this and hopefully it's adding value to you to take you out of like the hypnosis that the culturescape is putting you in, saying you have to do this thing before you can have that. And just saying, you know, what? Well, what is it that I want? What is it that I want to experience? What do I value most? And then going after those things and not being swayed or hypnotized by everything else that's around you. Because life is precious. Life is blessing. Life is short. Life is everything. So experience it all. If you are interested in attending one of my coffee dates workshops, you can visit donnyrous.com d o n n y r a u s.com there. You can also send me comments, questions, you can check out the podcast and you can even order some of my delicious Rouse coffee. That is all I've got for you guys today. Thank you so much for tuning in. God bless. And I will see you again too. And I'll leave it on this. This is going to be the new way I close my podcast. You only get one life. Live it. Thank you.
