Donny Raus talks about getting past hesitation when trying something new. He argues you don't need to commit forever to test an idea, just take a small action and see if it fits your life.
Hi guys. My name is Donnie Rouse and you are listening to the podcast One Life. If it fits, wear it. What is something that you wanted to try or maybe a lifestyle shift you've been wanting to try, but you've been putting off the decision. You've been sitting on the sideline. What is it that's holding you back? And how can this, how can you overcome this resistance with regard to this decision, this thing you want to do or change? I feel like the reason why so many people may sit on the sideline or take inaction is because they're afraid of marrying that choice. They're afraid that once they commit or once they make the decision to do something, that there's no turning back, that they're locked into that decision forever when that's not the case. So the way around this is a lot easier than you may think. To give you an example of this, I was in this thing called Mindset Retreat with Fabienne Fredrickson, and during that Mindset retreat, we were looking for different ways of bringing revenue into your business. So in this exercise, she has you literally take a blank sheet of paper and write down 50 ways that you can start making money. Now, as I was writing this down, one of the ideas that came up, actually I kind of froze somewhere around like in the 20s. Then I got a little bit of spurt. I started writing down more things that could bring revenue in. Then I froze somewhere in like the 40s. And one of the last things that, like trying to distract myself, I opened up Facebook and in my feed I saw a comment by someone left in an espresso group talking about coffee podcast. And in that coffee podcast they said, hey, you know, does anybody know any good coffee podcast? It caught my attention because I remember looking for a coffee podcast myself, interested in listening to it, realizing that there was nothing there. There weren't any coffee focused podcasts. So right when I heard read that comment, I was like, all right, well this is like sent by the divine right? So I wrote that onto my 50 ways and I ended up completing the 50 ways. So the next thing after I wrote that down, the next thing for me to do was to take action on that. So the following day I went into New York City and I was like, alright, you know what I'm gonna do? I'm gonna go visit 50, not 50. Oh gosh, I had to visit five cafes. And I was like, you know, I'm gonna just kind of test out this entire process of reviewing coffee shops. This way I could post it on YouTube and maybe make some content for the podcast. I went down there and I started to kind of feel what it would be like. I went to the first cafe. I brought out my espresso sommelier form that I created, and I started to sip the espresso, take pictures, take video, and then fill out this form. I got the interest of some of the cafe owners. They were coming over, inquiring about, well, what are you doing? And I explained what I was doing, how I was just kind of testing out the validity to see if it's something that I want to take on. I went to another cafe and I met a couple that had just moved to New York City from, I think, San Francisco. While they were there, they were saying, wow, this is so awesome. Like, this sounds like something we would be interested in. We'd like to hear more. We'd like to listen to the podcast. We'd like to know what the YouTube channel is. And I was getting really, really good feedback. But then I checked in with myself. Listen, is this something that I want to do? Like, is it. Is this something that I want to, like, commit my time to doing? Because in the end, we only have limited amount of time that we get to spend, so we have to make sure that we focus our energies on the things that are going to bring us joy, the things that are going to make us feel fulfilled. Not completely convinced. So I did that. And at the end of the day, I asked myself always, well, how does this feel like. Does this feel like something that, like, that energizes me, that makes me feel good, that makes me want to do it every single. If I could do it every day, would I do it? And to be completely honest with you, the answer was no. And so I'm not. I was in kind of like a weird funk that. That day because I had a conversation at the beginning of the day that kind of, like, kind of put me off balance a little bit. So I'm gonna go give it another try just to see what, you know, the state I was in, if I was bringing that to there. But if I. If it was not the state that I was bringing to the. Then I will let it go. So let's bring it all back to that thing that maybe that you want to do, that you have been taking action on. Like, what is it that you want? Maybe it's a lifestyle change. Maybe it is starting a new career. Let's stick with the lifestyle change or booking a trip or travel, something like that. Because again, the point of this podcast is to kind of hone you in on what's going to make your life, what's going to enrich your life, what's going to make you feel alive, what's going to give you the emotions that you want, what's going to stir that passion inside of you? What is it? What is that decision that you've been putting off or that thing you've been wanting to do, but you just haven't committed to it? Next, what is one action you could take just to kind of stir the waters, just to get a feel, feel for what it would be like to take on this role or to make that decision to live in this place, to take that trip, whatever it may be. And the next thing is, I want you to take that action. I want you to step into that role. Because there's something to be said about taking action. You've heard me say it before saying, burn your boats. That means when you cut yourself off from a decision, you leave no other way but forward. But this is different. Like this. I want you to do it this. Like, if you're not really sure you have something you want to try out, this is about saying, all right, well, let me just test it. Let me see how it feels. Right? It's like going to a clothing store. If you're a woman, this probably resonates with you even more. Like, you go in there early. Well, men too. But if you go in, you try something on, you're like, all right, well, how does this feel me? You know, if it feels good, if it fits right, if it's comfortable, then you buy it, you invest into it. And I want you to do the same thing with the different things in your life. The friends you have, the place you live, the job you have, the trips you take. Do those things that feel good, that feed you, because that is what life is about. Life is about feeding yourself with those emotions because life is emotion. If you were to die tomorrow, God forbid, but there's so much that's beyond our control. If that tomorrow would be it, I want you to at least have all the emotions to say, well, I did everything that I wanted to do. I lived my life according to myself and how I wanted to live my life, not by anyone else's, that would make me very, very happy. And that is my intention for you and what I want to guide you towards. So, guys, I hope you enjoyed this podcast. If you did, please give it a thumbs up. Share it with your friends and family. I hope you enjoyed this session. God bless and I will see you again next week.
