Donnie Rouse recounts an unplanned night in Miami and argues that stepping outside your comfort zone is how you actually live. He ties the story to his philosophy of intentional living and his Live Your One Life workshop.
Hi, guys. My name is Donnie Rouse, and you are listening to the podcast One Life in the Unexpected. So you wouldn't go on a trip and you wouldn't say, man, I cannot wait until I get back home. You wouldn't do that in a million years, right? Because what would be the point of planning a trip if you were looking forward to that? That end destination, and the end destination being your return back home. So if we wouldn't do these for a vacation, why do we do these? For our personal life, we look for completion in, you know, in our personal careers, we look for completion with our health. We look for completion in our relationships. But it is in that planning, it is in that unfolding, it is in that building that the joy of life really happens to give you a story. I'm currently in Miami, Florida, and I was. I had come home a little bit later than some of my friends, so they were already met up, and they were playing pool at a hostel down the street. So not sure of what I was going to do. I grabbed some food and ate it, and then I headed over there. Everyone was talking about what their plans were for the night. I was feeling a little bit lethargic. I was like, you know what? Well, you know, I don't really think I want to do, you know, know, go over there. It seems like a little bit too much of a commitment. But then as we were sitting there, I was starting to get a little antsy because we were sitting around, we weren't really moving, we weren't doing anything with the night. So rather than let the night pass us by, I grabbed a couple of my friends, I said, listen, I'm gonna go to this lounge in Lincoln Road, and if you want to join me, let's go. We'll walk there, and that's that. So we end up walking over there. And on the way there, well, once we get there, we realize that the. The lounge is completely booked, and it's impossible for us to get a table unless we want to pay about $300 tab at the bar. We didn't forego that because it was only an hour left at the bar and we would have had literally start chugging drinks. And that was not the intention. The intention was for us to go out, enjoy the night, meet people. As a result, we end up going to a pizzeria right down the street because one of my friends was hungry. So we stopped in there. Even though I had just eaten, I ended up getting a nice slice of cheese pizza. This is an endorsement for Pista Rustica. They were really good pizza, but. And one piece is all you need. You do not need more than one piece. So we're sitting there eating and at this point everyone's kind of agitated. Everyone's like, well, you know, let's just go back to. Let's eat this. Let's go back to the hostel. Some of my friends wanted to walk to the hostel. My other friend wanted to take an Uber to the hostel. It wasn't that far, but he had been walking so much that he just felt like, you know what? Screw this, I'm just gonna take the fastest way home. As we were getting ready to leave, we were throwing out our garbage and I had. Someone had caught my eye and there was this table of three women who were speaking different languages. So that grabbed my attention and then just kind of out of nowhere, I was like, well, let me go just say hi to him. So when my friends were walking up one way, I went around the other way and I said, hi, how you guys doing? Where are you from? Turns out one's from Colombia and France, the one's from the United States, one was from Brazil. So as a result of, like, that unexpected twist, we end up getting in a deep conversation. My friends were a little bit agitated at the time. And then one of my friends came over and he's like, hey. He introduced himself and we started talking and then another one of them came over. I was like, all right, well, I guess we're. There's no stopping Donnie once he starts talking to someone. Then he came over. And last but not least, my last friend came over and was talking on the phone kind of like a little bit further away from the group. But then he came over and we all started engaging. As a result of that unexpected. As a result of doing that, all of a sudden the night took a completely different turn. And it was all about that. Stepping out into the unknown, stepping into something different. I like to be curious. In life, when I see people, I have this urge to talk and speak and learn and just kind of see where people are coming from in life. And as a result, that usually leads to awesome experiences. So where we were going home, we end up going to a. The girls wanted to go to another bar, but everything was closing at 12 o'. Clock. We had the exception of this one bar that was open slightly later. So we headed over there and as we got there, the bar was closing down and we're like, alright, well, now what? So we end up going to the hostel that we booked and we ended up Just having a few drinks and sitting by the pool talking. And as a result of that, we ended up going down to the beach and doing, bringing like the party to the beach as well as another giant group that was at the hostel. And the night didn't end until 6 in the morning. Everyone left, everyone went back to their rooms and I was like, alright, well it's 6 o', clock. I normally go running at 7 o' clock for sunrise, so what's the point? So I got, you know, I went upstairs, I put all my running gear on and I went for a run and I got there a little bit before sunrise. So I just sat at the beach waiting for the sun to come up. So how does a planet fit into the unexpected? The unexpected is because, well, first of all, when you look at these things, right, you can say, well, yeah, it kind of happened by accident. You know, you met these people and you had this conversation and then you got inspired to start doing all these things. And it might sound like it was, you know, like kind of coincidental, but if you know me, you know that I love people, you know that that is how, how I interact, that's how I meet people. I just tend to like muster these groups wherever I travel and that's what happened there. The unexpected was choosing to do a different path. I could have said, you know what, no, we're planning to go to the hostel, screw it, I don't need to talk to anybody, let's just go. And then even after that, I could have cut the plans off after we had had the chat with them. We could have said, you know what, no, we're not going to go to a bar, we're just going to go back to our hostel. Even when we went back to the hostel, we could have said, you know what, it's getting late, we're just going to call it a night here. We're not going to go to the beach. But as a result of just saying yes, as a result, to accepting everything that was coming our way, my way, it opened up to a more beautiful experience. I don't know about you, but I. My favorite thing is sunrise. I love sunrises more than sunsets because there's this peace, there's this awakening of life and then awakening kind of brings us this tranquility to my day. That's one of the reasons why I'm here now recording this. This was last night and I had been trying to redo some recordings for the last like week, two weeks, but I had been encountering some resistance where the room I'm currently in is like, very, very noisy, so it picks up all these background noises. Maybe you could hear it, maybe you can't. I have a new set of headphones on, so that might be amplifying the noise. So I was resisting it, but then I said, you know what, let me come on here. Because one, I think there's a message that everyone needs to hear. And two, it's not about being perfect. It's not about that end destination, going back to that. It's not about saying, all right, it has to be so polished. It's about putting it out there. It's about letting people feel the words, feel the message. And that message I have for you is I want you just to experience. I want you to feel life. And that happens from stepping beyond that comfort zone, stepping beyond, stepping into the unfamiliar. That's where life happens. Everything that you do, day in and day out, you already kind of know where it's gonna happen, where it's gonna go. You already know the emotions you experience. Everything happens in that unknown. And I want you to let go of the idea that it has to unfold a certain way rather than just say, you know what, I'm just going to throw myself in the situation. Yeah, I have a general idea as to where I want to end up, but let's see what happens. What you may find out, just like in our night, was that you may actually have an even better experience as a result of being open to it, open to new things that are coming into your life. So what is it? Where are you? What is your daily rituals, your daily habits? On a week to week basis, how often do you step out of that comfort zone? How often do you accept the invitation of a friend who is inviting you maybe to an event or an experience that you've never had before, or you think that you dislike, you won't like, or you won't enjoy. And where has that gotten you? Without a doubt, it's led you down the path of having those same emotions, having that same experiences. But if you say yes, which I encourage you to do, you start to meet people, you start to see different things, you start to develop new opinions. Life happens at the edge of our comfort zone. When we take that step beyond. And that is all I got for you guys. I hope this helped in some way. I hope you enjoyed this podcast. It was kind of ad hoc. I just felt inspired to share my.
