Donny Rouse talks about why entrepreneurs need to surround themselves with inspired people. He credits joining coaching groups and communities with helping him take new actions and expand what felt possible when isolation was dragging him down.
Hi guys. My name is Donny Rouse and you are listening to the podcast One Life Inspired People. I heard a long time ago at a Tony Robbins seminar he said, if you want to get inspired, get around inspired people. And it didn't really, I wasn't sure how to even take that. In the beginning when I first heard it, I was like, well, what do you mean get around? Aspired people, like, locate to a new city. Like, what does that mean? Like, get around people who are doing different things. So I this, I heard this probably literally almost a decade ago. And for years I just kind of, you know, I joined different coaching groups which that is a way of getting inspired around different people. Although in the beginning I didn't notice it, I didn't see it as such. Recently I just completed a two year coaching program. And so I left behind, I mean, I made a lot of friends, but I also had left behind that group. And in the period between finding the new program, like a new group and the one I just left, there was like this lull, I think, to all of like the different things that I had started. The ideas I had gotten from like, for my business as a result of being in that group. I was like, well, what am I going to do now? Where am I going to get this inspiration? I said, well, you know what, maybe I could just, maybe I'll get inspired from being out in the world talking to different people. I'll find the inspiration. What was my mindset? What I found was that that inspiration really didn't come because one of the challenges for entrepreneurs is when you are, you know, when you're alone a lot of the time, maybe you have employees and you're around people, but most of the entrepreneurs I know, they spend a lot of time alone and that could be very hard. So I didn't know what to do. And then I joined a new group. And as a result of this new group, I started to get excited. I started looking at the, you know, the different ways people were bettering themselves, both in like, you know, spirituality and their finances and all these different things and what they were doing. And it inspired me to take new action that I hadn't done in the past. And when I looked at it, like, well, what had happened? Like, I was trying to break it down, like what made me feel good about where I was going, like this new action I was taking. And the key is one of it is the new action. There are dozens of coaching things that you can do in the world right now, but what leads or what people are going after is this sense of belonging, a sense of community. I was out to drinks with a friend of mine yesterday. We were both taking a break on a Sunday. We're like, I called him up, said, hey, do you want to meet up? And he said, yeah, I'll meet you downtown. So we went downtown Stanford, and we were sitting there, and he, you know, he shared with me. He's like, you know what? I have the people I'm hanging around with. He's like, I have dreams to do A, B and C. But he's like, my friends don't have those same aspirations. And what I'm finding is that, like, you know, I'm helping my friends try to, you know, to get to where I am on my level, but I'm not doing good. Like, I'm not bettering myself because I'm spending so much time trying to teach my friends. He's like, kind of like the analogy of being on a plane. Like, in order for you to help others, you must first help yourself. You have to put the life jacket on yourself, the oxygen mask on yourself first before you can help other people up. So I thought about that, and I thought about the new community that I just entered. And I'm doing this course which literally focuses on getting cleared around every single aspect of your life. And as a result of being that and talking to some new people who are taking similar steps that I am, I started getting inspired. Like, what else is possible? And I started, you know, like, branching out more, doing more stuff with this podcast and taking courses on how to better the podcast. Whereas before I couldn't see it. Right? Isn't true. You get stuck in a, like, you get this, like, this way of looking at things where, like, you're like, I can't figure it out. This is just the way it is. And then all of a sudden, you expand your perception. All of a sudden, new possibilities come in. And now what you couldn't see before is now as clear as day. And it all came from being in a new community. But being around inspired people. But what was the catalyst, right? So we have to back in order to understand it. You have to backtrack. You can't just say, okay, well, being a community, it is action. Action is the catalyst to everything, right? If I didn't take the action to say, okay, well, I need to change something. I need to do something that's going to put me into a better state, and joining this another coaching group or coaching community, it wouldn't have put me into that place where now all of a sudden, the possibilities expand and what's available as well as what's possible expanded. If I'd stayed in my own world, that's where my. I would have stayed literally in that small world. I wouldn't have stepped out of it as much as I. We can't do these things on our own as much as we. I used to like to think so. I said, well, I don't need anyone's help. I can do it all myself. That is not true. You need people around you. You need people who believe in you. You need people who will hold you to a higher. Stanford, Stan. Stanford, I said. My hometown. Higher standard. And you need people who see the real vision of you, because sometimes you're gonna miss that vision. You're not gonna believe in it yourself. So when people say, listen, I believe in you, this is where I see you playing. You're like, wow. Well, you know, if they believe in me, they believe I can get there. I mean, I really respect, admire this person, and I know they wouldn't just blow smoke. It must be true. And all of a sudden, as a result of that, now you start to reach for places, new heights that you wouldn't reach for before. And that all comes from choosing a new community, choosing to be around people who are reaching for more, people who want more out of necessarily have to just mean people who are pushing, pushing, pushing, trying to get more. Because I don't like that. That effort there is stressful. I've been there where I've tried breaking through barriers and it causes a lot of stress adversely. I've also been the place where you just get into a place of feeling good and then stuff just flows and all of a sudden it's effortless. Yeah, there's some pain because you, you know, I think, you know, like, there's a. I'd read a quote, it talks about pain and suffering. They said pain, when you don't see the purpose in the pain, it becomes suffering. And you stay in the, like this loop. But when you see pain as a. As kind of like a. A catalyst for growth, you. You give meaning to that, that pain that you experience. And when you break through now you have something more to give. So where are you, like, where are you on the day to day? Are you an entrepreneur or, you know, do you feel like you're alone? Do you have anyone else who around you who has like the same dreams and aspirations that you do for your life? Like, maybe I'll go back to traveling because it's one of the my. Well, I love travel and I feel like so many people that I encounter, they have these aspirations for traveling but they, you know, like, well, none of my friends want to travel. So how am I going to do it if no one's going to go with me? Oh yeah, I could go, I could do a group travel, but I don't want to travel like a group. You know, they go through this loop and they keep themselves stuck in it. And there's a million ways to meet people who are on that same wavelength that want to travel and would do it maybe in a small group with one, one on one or maybe even two people. Right. So where are you feeling? Where are you on the day to day get real with yourself. Do you feel, you know, are you in that stuck where you're literally just looping emotions and you have a group, some people you can turn to who see the real you? Right. And I say that because we tend to put limits on our own growth. So who see the real you and what you're capable of if the answer is no, and you'll know that right away if the answer is no. I encourage you to join a new group. Find someone who believes in you. If what I'm saying connects with you in any way. Join the Donny Rouse. There's a Facebook group I have.
