Donny Raus explores how to set intentions that actually matter. He examines everyday habits like morning coffee and travel plans, then shows how to align them with what you really want from life, not just what you do by default.
Hi, guys. My name is Donnie Rouse, and you are listening to the podcast One Life, Intentions with Intention. So we all know that we should put an intention forth before we do anything. Why do we do that? Because by putting an intention, we're saying, this is what I want. And we're creating a mental image as to what we're driving towards. As a result of doing that, the chances and the likelihood of actually getting that which we're setting out for increases tenfold. So is it possible? Can we put intention behind intention? And what would be the result of it? I did that, and what I found was that sometimes our intentions may even harm us. And I'm using harsh words like say to harm us, because I want to kind of put emphasis on it, that it might not always be in our best interest. Sometimes we may be putting the short term at the expense of the long term. This morning, I was making my morning cup of coffee, and it's something that I really, really love. It's the ritual, because it sets me in the present moment. I love the taste, and it really just kind of. It grounds me, and I get lost in, like, the whole experience of, like, the cup, the flavors. And I have this habit of making a. Especially this time of year, there's a cookie called Mostaccioli, which is an Italian cookie around Christmas time that has spice chocolate. It's amazing. But anyways, the reason I'm telling you this is because that's how I've been starting my mornings. And the intention behind that morning coffee was to make me present, to set me in that day, carrying that mood into everything else that I did thereafter. When I looked at the intention, I was like, all right, well, what if I. Is there a better intention? Is there something that will make me feel better, that's better for my body, that's better for my soul? And then I was like, well, yeah. And I know that coffee, the first thing in the morning, isn't the best thing for you, especially on your stomach, but after you eat, after you drink some water and you rehydrate because you're dehydrated from sleep, then you can follow up with a cup of coffee. So when I was looking at that, I was like, how interesting is that? And where else in my life have I done that? And to no surprise, I've done it during travels, too. As you're listening to this, I was actually planning on going to Turkey a month. Maybe not even a month. Maybe like a couple weeks ago. And right now, because of COVID most of the country is shut down or at the very least kind of restricted. There's curfews for people of a certain age. And from what I've been told by friends who are living in the country that it's just not, it's not the same. The experience would not be the same right now. And they said, you know, I highly recommend you coming back a different time. I had my heart so set on this trip that I was willing to do it regardless. But when I looked at the intention. Well, what was my intention behind wanting to book this trip? The intention was, well, of course I wanted to see and experience like Istanbul, the coffee, go to Antalya. If I'm even pronouncing these names right, I'm sorry if I butcher them. Or Cappadocia or Docea, however you say it. Yes, I wanted to have these experiences, but the driving intention behind this was to put off, like to check another box to hit another country so that I didn't go a year without travel. But what is the expense? Well, there actually was a considerable expense. The fact that I was willing to go. There weren't many flights going around trip, so I would have had to spend a lot of money, more money than I've spent on the flight in a very long time in order just to go to Turkey. And once I'm there, what was the other intention? Why do I travel? I travel because the people I meet, the experiences I have with them, and a lot of that was kind of taken away. I was booking hostels in different areas to find out that I was the only person staying in the hostel. Not really an experience I would want to have. And looking at that, I was like, all right, well what is the real intention? My real intention is to set myself up my business this way. I could take these trips, I could have these experiences and do everything that I love. And by taking the time, the downtime to actually create that, that is a lot more powerful than just taking this trip for the sake of taking the trip. Granted, I want to experience all these other things, but it's at the expense of my long term. And that was the realization. And I do this more often than not. And I don't regret a single trip that I've ever taken in my entire life because every trip is brought experiences and has enriched my life. But how has that played out in your own life? Think of your day to day intentions, the things that we do habitually because they make us feel good. What is the intention behind those? And are there costs associated with those intentions? As with my cup of coffee, there might not be a direct cost to it, but if you look at the syntax and the order in which I'm doing it, there might be a cost to it. Just like the travel thing, right? Maybe it's the exact opposite. Maybe you've been wanting to travel for so long and you keep putting it off, then you realize that you need to kind of push it up. Because you know what, you've been with your spouse or your girlfriend for a long time. You know, marriage is probably the next step and you guys want to have kids and all this other stuff. Maybe it's time that you push that forward and you start making good on those desires that you have. So what is it for you? And once you understand that, is there an intention that supersedes what your current intention is? Going back to the example I just drawn for you, if the intention is create this life and have experience with your wife, but you want to experience more of life, maybe moving up that trip and doing it now would be beneficial. Then you guys could say, you know what? I did this. I'm ready to do all this other thing, like create a family and a life together. That is all I got for you guys. So I hope you, if anything, I hope you came away with the fact that one apply to attention to everything you sing, every single thing you do. Because whether you know it or not, you're always, there's always a reason we do what we do. So to be conscious and set that intention, but also know that whatever intention you set to kind of double check and see, well, is this the best intention? Is there a better one out there? Because sometimes we might be meeting those short term needs. That is all I've got for you. So if you enjoyed this podcast, please share with your friends, your family, hit subscribe. And this coming January, I'm going to be doing Live youe One Life, a workshop. And that workshop is going to be around creating the Year of passion. Creating a year that you're going to be proud of, a year that you're going to remember. I had said it many times over that I believe so many people put all this emphasis onto their career, onto these things that may not matter or they may matter, but it's not at the center of who you are. You might be doing it because of it's what you're supposed to do or you feel these like, societal demands. But you know what? Maybe you should start living a little. Maybe you should start doing some of the things that'll bring you joy Because I'll tell you, when you do that, the effects of it are gonna amplify. They're gonna magnify everything else that you do because you'll be coming from a different state. So that is gonna be taking place January 9th.
