Donny Raus reflects on canceled plans and career setbacks from March 2020, exploring how disappointment can lead somewhere better. He shares personal travel stories and argues for acceptance when things don't go the way you planned.
Hi, guys. My name is Donny Rouse. And you were listening to the podcast One Life. Have you ever wanted an outcome so bad only to feel disappointed afterward when you didn't get it? Or maybe you got something different than what you wanted and you still felt this disappointment and envy for the person who got what you wanted or that outcome that you wanted to achieve for yourself? About a year ago, I was traveling through Europe. So a year ago, I was in Italy, traveling all around Italy because I was completing an espresso sommelier certification. While I was there, I was going to take a break and go down to Istanbul, Turkey, just to spend maybe a week, because I wanted to go to Cappadocia to ride the hot air balloons. I wanted to try Turkish coffee and just see the beauty of Istanbul itself. Prior to that trip, there was a. There was a feeling of dis Ease that I had felt that I never felt in my entire life when. When booking a trip, as I spoke to friends and like my siblings, I was telling them different secrets about my business, recipes and stuff like that. There was this feeling that I wasn't going to return after this trip. And it bugged me out because I never had that feeling in my entire life. And then to go on this trip and to feel that it was just like this offsetting feeling compound that. While I was in Rome, Italy, it was the day before I was going to go down Istanbul, I kept getting texts from my father saying, you know, cancel the trip, cancel the trip. You shouldn't be going there. Cancel the trip. And he was incessant. He just kept texting, texting, texting. And as a result of him constantly texting me, I was getting more and more anxious. Until that morning when I was supposed to go to the airport. I decided that I was just going to cancel my trip. What ended up happening now? Now this window opened up where I had time. I had to do something. I didn't want to stay in Rome. This was my 12th time in Rome. And I'm like, well, where am I going to go? I'm going to be spending almost three weeks here in Italy. I have to go somewhere else. So I looked at the flights and I was like, all right, where can I go? Where can I go? And Prague was one of those options. So I looked around, I booked the trip. I went to Prague and was there. And at first I was a little bit. I was a little bit. Just kind of. I was a little pissed off, to say the least. I was very pissed off because I never canceled prior to that I never canceled a trip in my entire life. I never. My parents always chime in and they'll always say, oh, don't go here, it's dangerous. Don't go there. It's, you know, it's too risky, something may happen. And I've always cancelled that out. But the one time I actually left my itinerary with this, I didn't tell my father I was going to go to Turkey. I left him the itinerary and just kind of flew out of the country. And then he discovered himself and that's when he panicked. So I ended up canceling that trip to Istanbul and I spent about a week in Prague. And while I go through this, let me kind of take a step forward as opposed to a step backwards. I was in Genoa, so after completing the short trip to Prague, I went to Genoa. And while I was in Genoa, I met this Greek guy that was staying at the hostel as well. And we were talking over dinner and we were talking about just experiences in life. And while we were talking, he said, you know what? I was supposed to do this and I am doing that. It wasn't related to travel, the experience he was sharing with me. But what I took it as it was, I was looking at the trip, I was looking at the experience that I was currently having. So while I really, really wanted to go to Turkey, in Istanbul, and I was pissed off because I canceled it because of, you know, the incessant texting from my father, I took a step back and I looked at it and I said, well, you know what? Like, he's like, like his experience, it's like there is no one experience is not better than the other. They're just different. And when I recalled the experiences that I had on that trip, going to. From going to Prague, I mean, I wouldn't change the way it happened for anything. As a result of that trip, I had amazing experiences. I went to this place called Dog Bar, which is one of the coolest bars I've ever been to in my life. Mind blowing. It's like all these, like little nooks and crannies where you can like sit with a friend and have a beer as well as, like these. There's like a bar for coffee and tea, there's another bar for beer. There's a concert venue in this bar as well as like an eatery. And this was all underground, so it was just mind blowing. But I wouldn't have had that experience. And then while I was there, I met a friend, my friend Nikki woods, who I Went to that dog bar with, and we had a blast. Just going around the city and stumbling around drunk after, after getting out of the bar. And then I also met one of my really, really good friends, my friend Melissa. And Melissa is like. I look at her as like, almost like a kid sister in a way. But she. She was just an awesome person. And we spent a full day together. But I wouldn't have had that experience had I not, you know, had I stayed true to my original plans and gone to Istanbul. So I. Looking at back then, I was like, you know what? There's nothing about this trip that I regret. And it really was just a different experience. And we tend to put all this focus into expecting something to turn out the way it is. When it doesn't happen, we're completely devastated. And we can't even enjoy that which is in front of us. So we think that there's something lacking that, but really it's not. I mean, the only meaning something has is the meaning you. You apply to it. And I'll say that again because I can't say it enough. The only meaning something has is the meaning you apply to it. One more time. Third time's a charm. You're going to want to write this down. The only meaning something has is the meaning you apply to it. Do you have an experience that maybe if you still think about now, that it might kind of have like this uneasy feeling, or maybe you're angry that something. Something turned out in your favor. Maybe it was a championship game from when you were 6 years old on the soccer field and you missed the winning goal, and as a result your team lost or whatever it may be. Is there anything in your life currently that you. That holds like this, this tension that has like, is like a triggering effect? If there is, then why not apply what I just told you? There is nothing, not one option is better than the other. They're just different. And if, when you start to look at these experiences of life and you say, well, as a result of this, this happened. Right. Think about that normally. And I really do believe at my core that life is happening for each one of us. Sometimes we forget to acknowledge that. But life really is happening for each and every one of us. We look at failure and we think that failure or something that doesn't go our wrong way is life having it out for us or that. That God is, you know, angry at us or whatever it may be when maybe if we just kind of twist the way, maybe it wasn't meant to happen. Maybe whatever that experience is that we were going for. Maybe we weren't just we weren't ready for it. Maybe there was still more development. And maybe as a result of not getting what we wanted, we really came what we wanted. I remember in. I'll give you one more example. When I graduated from college, at that time I was working at Starbucks, and I really wanted to do marketing. I really wanted to go to the corporate side of Starbucks. So while I was at Starbucks, I was doing all these different things way outside of the scope of my responsibilities, and I was working a corporate job. On top of that, I was doing seminars for them. I was created an emailing list that was bigger than and more. I'm thinking it covered more material, reviews, everything than Starbucks itself as a company was doing at that time. I got commended by the president, and all I wanted to do is I wanted to go corporate. At least that's what I thought. And then when I applied for the position and I didn't get the job that I wanted, I was kind of bummed out. That's when I said, you know what? Screw this. I don't need them. I'm going to create my own way. And that's when I left. So as a result of not getting what I wanted, I got something even more. I started my own coffee business. And, I mean, there's a bunch of different events that didn't go my way. At least I thought that brought me to where I am now. And. And now I have my own coffee business. I am doing courses on passionate living, how to create and really focus all your energy on creating the year, the best year of your life, and giving you content like I'm doing here. Because for me, it's been more than coffee. And I might not have come across that. I might not have learned that if I had gone to Starbucks and I had taken that corporate route, I might be kind of stuck in a rut. Now I get to create my own schedule. I get to travel the world. I get to share my experiences with you. So this way that you know that you're not alone, and hopefully some of the stuff will get a little agitating for you. So this way you say, you know what? Yeah, there is something off and I need a change and I want to follow my heart. Or maybe I give you just some words of wisdom to make you see things differently. So this way you could be at peace in that moment and just really just start to enjoy. So again, why wait? You can do this now? Start practicing that acceptance when something doesn't go your way, say, that's fine, something better is coming. And just trust that something better is coming.
