Donny Raus on why stepping outside your habits matters. Travel, new conversations, and unfamiliar experiences crack open what you don't know you're missing. Curiosity breaks the pattern.
Hi, guys. My name is Donny Rouse, and you are listening to the podcast One Life. Knowing what you don't know, you can't experience anything outside of your awareness. So how do you begin to know what you don't know? You start to understand or you start to know or bring into your awareness things that you don't know by experiences you have, by reading, by knowledge, by speaking with other people. I was doing work with my father. We were working in a women's apartment building. And prior to working in this building, I had no desire to go to Iceland. For some reason, I think it was built up by so many people that I said, well, I'm not going to go there. I'm not going to do that, because everyone's doing that. And then we were doing work in the building, and I saw some beautiful photographs in her apartment. So I asked, well, where is this? And she went on to talk about Iceland. And she was saying how Iceland was one of the most beautiful places she had ever seen and how she's been there several times and she'll go back again. And she started really painting this detailed picture in my mind and what I found myself doing by the end of that, I was infatuated. I was like, oh, my God, I have to go to Thailand. Why did I put it off for so long? But then I thought about in my own travels, in my own interactions with other people who've never traveled before, and how when I share experiences with them, how it ignites this flame inside of them. So let's take a step back. What exactly is going on here? Right, so let's say I like to use the term for ice cream, right? If you've never had chocolate ice cream and you've only known vanilla, how do you know you don't know the chocolate, right? If you didn't know it existed, if you don't know it exists, then there's no temptation, there's no curiosity even try it. But now if you have friends who are telling you, oh, my God, the double chocolate. Oh, no, the triple chocolate. It is amazing. Oh, my God. All sudden, now your curiosity sparked, whereas you didn't know about this triple chocolate ice cream before, now it's in your awareness, and now you're like, oh, my. Well, now I have to try it because they've been raving about it. So the same is true of everything in life. So if you're ignorant, I use ignorant, not in, like, the negative term. But if you don't know about the possibilities, the things around you, how can you possibly experience it. So think of if you want to feel inspired, you have to be around inspired people because you start to see opportunities, you start to see things, you start to see possibility. But if you're staying in your little bubble of your world, you're not going to get inspired, you're not going to travel, you're not going to do those things that maybe you're not even aware of. Maybe ignorance is bliss. Maybe by being ignorant and not knowing what's out there, you could save a ton of money from travel. But I promise you, if you do, the experience you'll get as a result of it are going to shape your world. Expand your world and you'll be very happy for it. And the reason why I'm bringing this up today is because I want you to kind of step out to be a little adventurous. Step out into that uncomfort zone. Do the things that are uncomfortable, do the things that are new where maybe you have a bias or a stereotype against it. Because those are the things that are going to expand your horizons. Those are the things that are going to give you new knowledge, new experiences that are going to expand who you are and create new narrow connections. And travel is one of the best things for that. Because when you're in travel, when you're in a new situation, your brain is on and wired. Everything else, your neocortex is there, right? And everything else is kind of quiet because you don't know what is going on around you. And you have to take in every single thing, threat or no threat. Oh, new experience. Oh that's great. I like this. And you're constantly evaluating and as a result you're making new connections. And those connections now you could bring into your world. When you go back home, you can now you have a new understanding, a new view of everything that's possible. You have a new perspective on things such as happiness, you know what you value in life. And that is really important because when you step out of the quote unquote like the, what do they call it? The, the vort. Not the vortex, the Matrix I think it's called. That's what. Anyways, when you step out of the Matrix and out of that programming that you've been in every single day, because our habits are wired. Anything we do over and over, like going to waking up, have the same breakfast, going to work, coming home, working out, maybe if you're active and then eating and then going to sleep, you start to do that over and over and over. You've now been ingrained in a pattern that becomes very difficult to break until you get this maybe this new awareness or have a new experience that causes you to break that pattern and to choose a different path. So in short, what I want you to do is think about something, right? So say you wanted to travel, but you don't know where you want to travel to start to spark that curiosity. Have a conversation with somebody who is a traveler. Or maybe you want to start a new business, or maybe you want to bring your business online and you don't really know how to do it. You don't know how to start expanding and starting to market online. Speak with someone about it, because as a result of what you hear about what they're doing now, suddenly you have a new possibility. Now what you didn't know becomes known and now you can start to pursue knowledge to make that a reality. Guys, I hope you enjoyed this episode.
