Living Your One Life - Time for What Matters

Donny Rouse left his corporate job to start a coffee company and travel the world. He argues you shouldn't wait to pursue what matters: regret comes from postponing the life you actually want to live.
Most people spend their entire life stressed without ever giving a single thought as to what it is they really want or what's important to them. See, I'm here to cut through all that noise, connecting you to yourself and the life that you were meant to live. I used to slave away at a corporate job that I hated, but I broke through the social norms and pursued my passion. As a result, I own my own coffee company, I'm espresso sommelier, and I get to travel the world. You too can live a life that you love, but it starts with getting clear about what you want. It starts with a new decision. I'm your host, Donnie Rouse. You are listening to the podcast One Life. Today we are going to talk about living your one life and not putting it off. So many people put off living because there is this idea that we can't do it. We can't live the life we want. We can't take that trip we want. We can't pursue the passion that we want. We can't go after the career that we want, because in order to get that, we have to have a means goal, which we have to save the money first. We have to have the family first. We have to do all these things, the shoulds of life, and then you just should all over yourself. What I want, my intention of this episode here is to kind of get you acquainted with, like, the desires that you have to understand that, you know, what. What is the cost of not doing these things? Because the cost is greater than you think. And there is this all or none sentiment that people think, like, all right, well, I either have to do everything here or it's nothing at all. I'm telling you this because I was one of those people. Travel was one of the things that I did it with. I would literally want to, like, I would book months at a time. I would go away for like a month beginning of the year, a month at the end of the year. And as you can imagine, when you have your own business and you go away for a month, when you come back, it could be kind of challenging to get back in that mode, the back in the way of operating things. So you actually start, like, you take a few steps back before you start going forward again. So it slows things down. But the intention here is tell you a little bit of a story. I was talking to a friend and we were just talking about experiencing life, and he has a couple businesses that he's trying to build. And I asked him, I said, well, where have you traveled? Where have you. What have you seen? He's like, well, I've been to Italy a few times and I've been to one of the islands. And he may even watch this, but this is, you know, this is coming at you with love. I won't mention the name. And he was telling me where he had been. I was like, well, man, you got to get out in the world. There's so much more there. He's like, yeah, well, you know, I'm waiting to. I'm doing these things and I want to travel more, but the cost of putting it off for some later point, like, what do you think's likely going to happen? He has a girlfriend and they've been dating for a while, and I'm willing to guess they're probably serious. What are the chances, you think that five years from now, if they're still together, that he's going to. He's going to go out and he's going to do all these things around the world, he's going to see the countries he wants to see, he's going to have those experiences. I'd say likely none, unless you start doing it. Maybe he'll go to Paris, who knows? But until you start doing it, there's the chance of you actually doing it. Start to diminish, right? Because then life gets in the way. You have all these things you want to do, but all of a sudden life gets busy. The marriage and now you have a house. You're like, oh, God, you know, well, we'd love to take the trip, but let's put it off for a few years because we should save a little bit money or, oops, now you have a kid. Oh, my gosh, we can't do it now. We gotta save for baby's college. Let's do it in a few years. We'll keep putting a little bit of money. All right. Then you had fire happens or a car breaks down. It's always going to be something. So what I want you to come away with from this is take action on those things that you know that you're going to impact your life. And when I say impact your life, I'm not talking about like financially, stuff like that. It's the experiences that matter in life. It's the. Like those moments where you have experiences, you have growth, you meet friends, you have. You share. Laughs whatever it may be. Those are the things that I that impact my life tremendously. Maybe I'm just speaking to people who are like me, but there's a real cost to putting off Life. And it's regret when you think about life, right? Let's take a small example here. Close your eyes. Take a couple breaths in, one at a time, of course, and then release. Deep breath in. And release. Think of one goal that you had that excited you, that you have not fulfilled yet. You keep saying you want to do this one thing, but you never end up doing it. What is the cost of not doing that thing on your life? What is it that you're missing out on by not doing or experiencing that thing? And maybe who are you missing out on? As I mentioned, one of the best experiences or one of the reasons why I love traveling so much is because of the people I meet. And I have friends all around the world, friends for life that I may have spent one day with. And now just the thought of them, it conjures up a warmth in my chest because I'm just so grateful that I have them as friends and they feel the same way. I could text one of them and literally we could pick up like it was yesterday and that we hadn't seen each other for years. Get acquainted with. You think of the thing you want and get acquainted with the feeling of never having it, meaning the cost of not going after it. Because that's what's going to put things in perspective. I was listening to an audio by Jim Rohn and Jim Rohn says he was quoting a phrase from the Bible saying, you know, that's why, talking about working, how like you want to keep active, otherwise when you stop being active, you lose it. That's why I think after, at the time he was recording it, it was like six. After people retire, they have an average of six years before they die. Because once they're inactive, they don't have a purpose to get up in the morning. Their health starts to wane. So the quote he pulls from the Bible was something he said, well, that's why God took six days to create the world in one day rest. One day rest. Saying, you keep working, working, working, keeping that one day. I say, hell to that. I say, listen, do the five days, do the four days and take three days, right? Because life is meant to be lived. Life is meant to be felt. Life is meant to be enjoyed, Right? Because if you're not doing that, what the hell's the point of your purpose here? Yes, I believe for me there's three reasons. Impact, passion and why am I forgetting the third one? Impact passion and growth. That was the third one. Impact, passion and growth. Those are the reasons why I believe I am Here, passion is that zest for life, that feeling of aliveness by pursuing the things that are important to you, the experiences that are important to you. Growth is becoming more than who you are in this moment, which leads to fulfillment, because the more you have, the more you get to give. Which brings us to the last one, giving impact. So they all are intertwined. These are the big three. So you're like, all right, well, you know, how can I take four days off and three days and three days vacation? I'm not really breaking it down in that terms. I'm just saying make time for the things that matter to you. Isn't it true that people who you can be spend an entire day and not get anything done? Just because you're at the desk working doesn't mean you're being efficient and you're getting stuff done. The opposite could be true, too. Just because you go away on a vacation doesn't mean you're actually relaxing. I've had some of those. What I'm trying to say is be efficient. Be strategic. It's like going out and traveling. Yeah. You don't want to spend every dollar you have traveling and then end up being older and be like, I spent everything and now I have to work until I'm 120. Hopefully, that's how long I want to live. You want to avoid that? You have to be smart about it. You have to say, okay, well, how am I going to live now? How am I going to live my fullest life? How am I going to be true to myself and do the things I want to do without putting them off? Because everything changes. And the reason why I'm so adamant about doing the things now is because the experiences you have at 30 are going to be different. Or let's rewind a little. The experiences you have at 20, right. Say you start traveling then, are going to be different than the experiences you have at 30, which are different than the experiences you can have at 40, which are different than the experiences you have at 50. Right. Because every time you hit that different number, you think you have to behave a certain way. And plus, life is always changing, so your perspectives are going to change. And all of a sudden, now, that thing you wanted, you may not think you have the time or you may not even want to do, but at the time when you were thinking about it, when it first popped in your mind, you were really passionate about it. So take action on those things. So in closing, I feel like I'm rambling on a little bit here. I'm very passionate about this. I think the entire world needs to take a page out of the Italian notebook. Take time to just kind of relax, enjoy and feel and breathe the day, but also not put it off. I mean, we can go into Italian vacations and how they live in different time. In closing, what is one thing that you want? Pick an experience. Maybe it's travel to Rome, Italy, to sit in the Colosseum. Maybe it's to go to Paris and sip wine while looking at the Eiffel Tower. Maybe it's to go to Zambia and sit in the devil's armchair at the Victoria Falls. What is it? Why haven't you done it? What is the excuse that you've been getting? You may say, oh, well, you know, I didn't have the money, I didn't have the time. And I'm not going to call bullshit on that. And that might trigger some people, but I'm going to call bullshit because we always find time for the things that matter to us, right? The things that are important to you, you always find or make time for. And then third, what is the cost of not taking action, not moving towards this? If you were to get the end of your life? What are you missing out on by not having this experience? How is it going to make you feel by not having the experience? Get acquainted with the other side of fear or the other side of what's blanking words, the other side of procrastination. What is the cost? Because there's a cost to everything. And hopefully when you get really acquainted with that, you have a shift, be like, you know, yeah, this really matters to me. This is something that I want to do in this lifetime. And I'm not. I don't want to do it when I'm 70 and I can barely walk because it's going to be hard to get up Everest at 70 if I, you know, to break a hip. And then hopefully you'll take a small step. It doesn't have to be big. Maybe it's a small step, just looking on the Internet for pictures, inspiration, and looking up a tour group or something. And then maybe it's just setting a date, although, you know, you're not sure you can commit to it yet. But you pick a date, a few months out, a few years out, and you just put it on the calendar just to see how it feels. That's all I ask for you guys. I want you. I believe that every single one of you should live the most passionate and full lives that you can imagine. And that is my intention. That is my desire for you. So I hope you enjoyed this podcast.
