Donny Raus talks about the trap of comparing yourself to others and why your path is different from everyone else's. He draws from his own experience as a coffee professional and entrepreneur to argue that impatience and comparison kill growth. The real work is trusting what makes you singular.
Hi, guys. My name is Donnie Rouse. And you were listening to the podcast One Life. No one like you. Comparison is one of the stupidest things we could ever do to ourselves. When we're comparing ourselves or when we're comparing others to other people. The reason it is so idiotic and stupid is because each and every one of us, one, we all bring different gifts, we all bring something unique and special into this world. And then secondly is that we're all on a different path. Not one of us starts in the same place. I mean, if you have twins and they're born in the same household, even then they have a. Still, they have a different mental makeup, a different mindset. So nobody starts in the same place ever. The only difference, the only proper measurement is the measurement against yourself is that you're better today than you were yesterday, and so on and so forth. Because as that goes out. I watched this really, really good YouTube video last night, was talking about this exact point, and they were talking about how you just. Just aim to be 0.5% better every single day. And if you do that, if that's your aim every single day over the course of a year, you'll get. I can't remember what the number they use, but it's like at the end of a year, you're 100% better. And then with that compounding effect now, you know, you've literally launched yourself into space with the amount of progress you've made with coffee. I've had my business for 10 years and I've had. I've fallen prey to this comparison monster a lot. And it's not until recently that one that I stopped comparing myself to other people, but also looking deep within as to what it was that I wanted to build because I was, you know, I felt I had this, like, this, like this identity that I had to live up to with regard to being a coffee professional, which, if you follow my stuff, I mean, one, you know, my coffee's pretty freaking awesome. And. But also, you know that my. The message is much deeper then at least any company I know of. I don't know a single company that talks about life and the effect on your day the way I intended with my coffee. And that was part of my journey that only happened because, you know, I let the path unfold before me. And there was times where I was stuck in that comparison. When I was stuck in that comparison model, I was looking at everything else that other people were doing. I was looking at these big brands at the time, like that Stumptown or Whoever it was that had may have started around the same time I did. And now they have, like, national brands, and I would compare myself, like, oh, my gosh, you know, look where they are. And I'm. I'm still here in Fairfield county doing farmers market, so what's wrong with me? But it's not fair, because we're each on a journey. We each have something unique to give that we bring to the world. One of my friends, Fat Bien Fredrickson, says that everything your hobbies, everything that you're passionate about in life is there for a reason. There are no accidents. It's there for a reason. So for me, travel, coffee, personal development are just three of my three areas that I'm very, very passionate about. And I think if you. If you've been following me at all via, like, my. My emails through my company website, or even exchange some words at the farmers markets that I attend, you. I mean, you get that right away. I think it's. It's pretty apparent. And even through the talks that we're having on this podcast and that. And that's how I'm bringing everything in and combining it and make it and making it kind of like this package, because that's what I want to give to the world. So it's not fair for me to compare myself to any. Any coffee company, and nor is it fair for, you know, for them to compare themselves to me, because we're just different people, different messages, different way. We're all going to connect differently, too, right? So, I mean, I might speak to the people who were the Wanderlusters, or, you know, and they might speak to people who, you know, like the new style of fedora and, like, little mustaches. I'm poking fun at the hipster thing, but you know what I'm getting at, right, Is that we all have something to give, and we just have to be patient and kind to ourselves. And when we create that space. Excuse me, when we create that space for ourselves, then there's room to grow because we stop judging ourselves. And that's huge, because when you're judging yourself for not being a certain way, you're not allowing yourself to go. Now all of a sudden, you're contract. We got to give ourselves permission to say, you know what? It doesn't matter what's going on. You may even have family members and friends who are saying, oh, well, you've been here for five years. What's wrong with you? No, there's nothing wrong with you. Right? This is. You're exactly where you need to be at this point in time. I really, really, really, really do believe you're guided. I mean, you could take this journey as another example. Take this journey that I'm on, right? I'm doing this podcast, you know, I'm writing a book. I'm doing this, something else with my coffee brand. I mean, there's all these things going on that if I were to look back 10 years ago when I first stepped out with the Rouse Coffee company, or not even screw 10 years ago, let's go back. Like, I've been in coffee for about 20 years now. If I go back 20 years, the mindset I had when I was first got into coffee was completely different night and day to where I am right now. If I look back 10 years, if I had started a company and it was this hugely successful company, that vision that I had, what I thought I wanted 10, 15 years ago, I would not be happy with it now because I've evolved mentally. Like, my mind has evolved. I'm open to different experiences. I've seen more of life. And I would not have wanted, like, the coffee company. And not to say that I wouldn't have adapted either. I mean, who knows? But first thing, we can't look back. You know, when we look back, we could connect the lines, but we can't look the lines. We can't connect the lines looking forward. So you just have to trust that life is happening for you and going back. Like, I, you know, I've been doing this podcast. I don't even know how many episodes I have out. I have episodes scheduled for, like, the next, like, probably eight months, but I just keep doing them and I'll probably end up releasing maybe two a week. Just because I enjoy doing this is like, the dialogue. I want to share my life with you because I want you to know that things are okay. Everything's going to work out, and just to chill out, chill out, enjoy life. Do the things you're passionate about. Do the things you want to do now. Don't put them off. Because life is precious as well as beautiful, as well as exciting, as well as an adventure. Life is everything, right? It's all a different lens. We're looking at it. Life is. Is everything. So, yeah, just trust to be easy on yourself that. Well, I did it in this, one of the last podcasts where I can kind of consolidate and put everything into one main point. If there's one main point I want to leave is be easy on yourself, Trust that life is working for you, and don't compare yourself to anybody because you are unique. You have your own unique set of gifts, skills. You have God's thumbprint on you, right? There's something great. You're here because there's something about you that you were meant to bring into the world. It could be a best, an amazing mother. It could be, you know, a one dog walker. It could be a master coffee roast. Whatever it may be, we all have something in it. We all have to take the time to develop that skill in each and every one of us. But it starts with being paying attention to looking inward, being kind to ourselves and paying attention, where that inner voice is guiding us. This is one of the shorter episodes, but I hope it was powerful nonetheless. Guys, thank you so, so much for tuning in.
