Donny Rouse talks about pushing beyond your comfort zone in health, career, and personal growth. He walks through how to evaluate your life balance and take real steps toward what actually fulfills you.
Hi, guys. My name is Donny Rouse, and you are listening to the podcast One Life over the Edge. Where do you play in life? Do you step to the edge? Do you leap? Or do you freeze in fear? And do you retract? Your fulfillment in any area of your life is going to depend on what you do when you're at that edge. I think you can tell by the way I phrase that that it's when you go over the edge that you feel more of life. You feel more the emotions, the experiences, the fulfillment. But when you retract, that's when you get the things that you don't want. Maybe you feel stagnant. Maybe you have feelings where you don't feel good about yourself because you don't feel like you're advancing. I was at the gym earlier today and I was sitting on the mat. I just started going to the gym again in the morning because I always. I kind of go on and off. I'll start going in the morning and sometimes I'll fall away from and do in the afternoon because I, you know, had the habit of doing it later in the day for nearly my entire life. So I started going in the morning. And one of the things I love about that is that the feeling that you have a fresh start to your day, it all, like just getting out side of the house, side of your room puts you in a different frame of mind. And then you have no break in the day. You're putting yourself first. There's no break in the center of your day to go to the gym. And then, you know, I feel like I was always catching up, you know, trying to play catch up towards. Then I would go to sleep at late and the cycle would repeat. So I was on the exercise mat and I was stretching out after my workout, and I was looking around at some of the people surrounding me, and I was looking at their physique, their body types, and the results they've gotten from the workout. And one of the things that I noticed from watching these people do their workouts was that they would get to, you know, they would be maybe doing a set of weights, and then all of a sudden they'd put, you know, they would do a set. It would come very easy to them, and then they would put it down. They would pick the way to back up again, do another set, coming very easy to them again, and then put it back down. So it got me thinking about life, right? I mean, isn't it. Isn't it true that we kind of. We tend to stay in our comfort zone and for different areas of our life, we play a different game. For me, one of the areas that I'm very proud of is the area of my health, my physique. What is it for you now? I want you to think of one of the areas where you're not so happy with, where do you play there? And to go a little further about what I was referring to, that if you've done any kind of workout where you've seen really, really big results and success, you'll know that, like, and I've heard it quoted before, where it say you don't count the sets or the reps until you can't do them anymore. Like, until you start to strain. That's when you start counting. Everything up until that point is just maintenance. So if you want to grow, you have to push beyond that comfort zone. This is true in our bodies. This is true in our relationships. This is true in our finances. This is true in every everything. Going back to that question, what is it for you? What are the areas of life where you're thriving? Then I want you quickly just think about what are the steps that you take? What are the leaps off of that edge that you've been taking that have gotten you further in your rsa, maybe your career, Maybe it's. You know what, you switch jobs quite a few times. For many people, that scares a living crap out of them, right? Because it means uncertainty. But when you make that step, sometimes it means a giant bump in your salary. It means more experience, and now you have more broad experience to pull from. When you take a different job and all of a sudden your value goes up exponentially. What is it for you? Now think of adversely. Think of the opposite, right? Where are the areas where you struggle? What is the effort? What are those leaps that you take there? Do you take any? Are you taking the right leaps? Right. And I'm willing to say that you're not if there is. And I'm not pointing fingers at it, because all of us, we all have, like, this sliding scale. In some areas, we are very, very successful. We are very happy. And then there's others that we're not happy with. And that's okay, because this is life. It's about growth. It's about moving forward. It's about constantly improving. I think there's sometimes there's this talk about, like, masculine and feminine energy. The masculine is the push, push, push. The feminine energy is kind of let it come. Like, you know, sit back, don't push too hard, and Kind of let the forces come. I think you need a big. You need a balance of both, right? Because it takes to get over that hump of the fear. Sometimes it takes that masculine energy to push through, and then other times you need to just kind of relax and enjoy and let the things come to you without having to push so hard against them. Well, you should really never really push. It shouldn't be a push. But whenever you have to break past a belief, a habitual way of thinking, it does require you to break through some discomfort. So back to that area of where you haven't been seeing the results that you want. This would be a relatively short episode. But take an inventory of your life. Like, if you want to do a little bit piece of work, and I promise it will pay dividends for you. Write down all the different areas of your life, the categories of your life. This could be, you know, health, career, emotions, faith, whatever it may be. Write them all down and then give yourself a score, like on a scale from 1 to 10, where am I in each of these categories? And then just so you see the process, what is it that you do? What kind of steps, what kind of actions do you take in those categories? And then this will give you kind of. You'll get a picture as to where you're excelling and you'll also get the reasons as to why you're excelling in those areas and why you're not in others. And what this is going to do. This is just going to be like the proof to say, wow, you know what? The reason why I'm doing good here is because I've been doing all this other stuff where it's not a surprise that I'm not doing that well in this area because I haven't been doing that same way. And hopefully it'll just kind of give you a little shake to say, okay, well, these are now the areas that I need to focus on if I want to be balance out that wheel of life. If you think of a wheel, right, if you were to put these categories, they call it, I can't remember the name, they call it the Wheel of Life. I think the Tony Robbins term for it is the wheel of life, where you plan out the thing and each one you extend out to the point. So if it's a 9, if it's an 8, if it's a 5, the wheel pulls in. If you imagine that wheel going down a road, if it were on your car, the ride would be very bumpy. But when you start to build out all those areas where you're deficient, then all of a sudden you smooth out to ride and you start to be able to go faster as a result of it. So that is all I've got for you guys on this podcast today. I hope you enjoyed it. If you did, please give it a, like a thumbs up wherever you are, wherever you're listening it to, maybe even a review. I would really appreciate that. And I'm wishing you nothing but happiness and literally to live the life you've been dreaming about. That is my intention for you. So I hope you enjoyed this episode. God bless and I will see you again soon.
