Donny Rouse talks about where his confidence comes from: purpose, inspired action, and persistence. He traces it back to starting a podcast, taking feedback from others seriously, and showing up consistently toward his goals.
Hi, guys. My name is Donnie Rouse and you are listening to the podcast One Life Source of Confidence. A few weeks ago, when I had checked into a hostel in Miami, I had met a guy named Norton. Norton worked in social media and I'd given him my podcast. And he said after listening to it and kind of like looking through my social media, he had a question for me. He asked me, where do you get your confidence? And so the intention behind this podcast here is not to say. Not to say, to boost my. Like to boost my own ego and say, well, this is why I'm confident. Because to be honest with you, when he asked that question, I had no clue of how to answer it, but rather what I wanted to share was the breakdown in terms of how I arrived at what this so called confidence was. Because in reality, I didn't really see it as confidence at all. There were all these different influences that pushed me, or I would say pulled me to do this podcast and do all the other things that I do. That is what I'm going to share with you because I think that there's not a whole lot of differences between you and I. So when he asked me the question, the first thing I responded with was purpose. I said, well, you know, the intention behind doing the podcast, my purpose for doing it, when I think of what I want to give to the listener, that's what pulls me through. And if you're not aware of what that is, the intention is to get you to kind of, look, listen to my podcast, to take the stories, to actually place yourself in those stories that I'm telling you. This way you can take away the lessons of it and you can get a different perspective on your life. And sometimes that perspective means pursuing the job, sometimes it means taking the trip, doing some kind of life change that is aligned with you and with your heart's desire. So that was the first one he said. And after I told him that, he said, well, no, come on, it has to be. That's not really what I mean. Like, what is it that gives you confidence? Thinking about it, I thought to myself, well, I do enjoy being on the microphone. I enjoy speaking in front of people. It's one of the things that makes me feel good. It's one of the things I know and feel confident about. That's another reason why I enjoy doing podcasting. I enjoy doing Facebook and YouTube lives. Not satisfied with that answer as well, he continued to probe. He's like, yeah, all right, all right. But what gives you confidence? And this is the last point is probably the most important point I'm going to make of all of it because, well, I won't. I won't steal my own thunder. But then I said, I take inspired action. And I told him the story about how the podcast even came to be. I was in Westport, Connecticut, and my friend who was starting a podcast invited me to come along with her to, to get an explanation as to all electronics and how the technical stuff worked, likely because she wanted me to have another set of ears and eyes on it. So to say, if she had any questions, she could come back to me and ask and then I could clarify and help her. While I was at this technical meeting, they turned the microphones on and I got on the microphone and I just started joking around. I said, hi, my name is Donnie Rouse and you were listening to Blah blah blah blah. I don't even remember what I said. The gentleman behind the counter said, wow, you have a great voice for audio, for radio, for podcasting. So I was really, I was, alright, well, thank you. And I kind of like brushed it off and then I started talking again and then all the women there, there was three women in this podcast, they all said the same thing. So I was like, huh, all right, well, you know what? That feeling that I was proficient, that I had a natural ability to do something, I got inspired. I was, all right, well, you know what? Maybe I'll start a podcast. And I was like, well, what would I start the podcast on? And then one life popped in my mind and I made a date to actually go in and use the recording studio. So do you. Out of what I just said, what is it that you picked up out of that? I actually just picked up something new. It was one the two things I want you to pick up out of this little, this third part that I just mentioned to you was one, how other people made me aware of this innate ability of mine to be able to connect, to be able to speak and speak clearly. And that was one of the things that kind of sparked the interest, that sparked the inspiration, but taking the action, the inspired action, setting the date, like deciding I was going to do a podcast, setting the date and locking myself in of everything I just mentioned, that is the source of confidence, to be perfectly honest with you. When I was first doing my podcast, I thought they sucked. I wouldn't say I thought they sucked, but I wasn't like it would be so easy to critique and break myself down. And I had just started the podcast, so what are the chances of them being perfect? The first time around, likely I would be a little bit harder on myself. And they probably weren't as bad as I thought. But I never even went back to listen to those podcasts. I recorded them and then I posted them because I was like, you know what? The action is more important than the outcome. The action is more important than, than the outcome. Because I know once I create the habit of doing the podcast and then posting and without being critical of myself, once I built that habit in, put that habit in place, I would attach more pain to breaking that habit than to not breaking it. Think about it in your own life, right? Think of a food that you like to eat. Let's take the opposite, a junk food. You have it for so long also now it's normal now to break away from that. It's painful. And if you do anything over, over and over and over, you start to build a natural confidence. So, Norton, this one is for you. If I were to tell you what is the source of confidence? The source of confidence is to take that action and to keep taking action. Because by keep taking that action, you build the confidence in yourself and you also have to detach yourself from the outcome. Only commit to the action. And as you commit to the action, taking new action every single time, you'll start to develop these tweaks, you'll start to fine tune, you'll start to improve the material, whatever it is that you're doing. So that's everything. If you've listened to prior podcasts like Fire, Ready, Aim, Inspired Action, the majority of what I talk about all starts with just taking action. So I hope you enjoy this podcast. I hope I always leave you with a little bit of homework. So let's get there. Let's leave you with a few questions. What is one thing that if you were to do you'd feel really good about? Maybe you talk about it and you just kind of get inspired. It puts a smile on your face. Write down one action I want you to first write down. We're going to do three things. One, write down a small action that you can move towards that. And that wouldn't require all that much from you. It could be like, say you want to book a trip to Italy. That first action could be, well, let me write down three cities I would want to visit. Okay, that's your first action. That's easy to do. It doesn't require much from you. Next, number two, write an even bigger action with the example I just gave you. Now, maybe it's like, well, let me look up a tour guide and you know someone who like three different tour guide companies that could plan this trip for me. And third number three, what is one action that would lock it in place? So maybe now that third action is like, well, you know what, I'm just gonna buy the ticket for that trip in this week and then I know I'll figure out the rest. And I invite you and I challenge you to take that third action. At the very least, take number one and maybe even number two. But I inspire you to jump right to number three because I know that by doing number three, you commit everything else is going to fall into place. When you have that faith, when you leap, the next step appears. That is what I've got for you guys today. Hope you enjoyed this podcast.
