Donny Rouse talks about having a clear life vision and why knowing what you want matters. He shares stories from conversations with others about their goals and pushes back on drifting without a plan.
Hi, guys. My name is Donny Rouse, and you are listening to the podcast One Life Their Plans. You may have heard the quote that goes, if you don't have a plan for your life, someone else does. And there's a couple ways in which this quote, which I interpret this quote first, is if you don't have a clear vision for your life, you're going to be kind of pulled in many directions. And as a result of being pulled in those directions, you're not going to make progress towards any of them because you haven't defined what it is that you're going for. Now add an extra layer onto that. Now add other people's influence, other people's visions on there. They have visions that they want to create, and they need you to do it. So you have to have your feet planted on the ground and say, well, what is it that I'm going after? What is it that I want? And then only when knowing that can you look at the landscape and say, okay, well, what opportunities are out there? What is aligned with my final outcome? What is going to get me closer to where I want to be, where I want to end up? And then that's where you take action from. So what do you want? I'm living in Miami, Florida. In the first couple weeks while I was here, I was staying in a hostel. And as you imagine, you meet tons of people from all over the world. This particular hostel was a ton of creatives. One night, we're all sitting by the pool, we're all sharing and exchanging ideas, and one of the girls who's an artist, was sharing her desire to bring her art to Miami. People in the group started chiming in with how they can help and how they think that she can go about achieving that goal. A couple days later, she had come up with this entire organizational chart, this entire plan for how she was going to bring her goals to fruition. She had texted me one night, and she says, hey, you know, do you have time? I'd like to meet. I'd like to give you a proposal. I said, all right, proposal. I wasn't really sure what she was referring to because I'd mentioned before that, you know, I worked in. Com doing podcasting. I'm doing life coaching, and I'm bringing that aspect into my coffee company using the coffee ritual. So she kind of. She was aware of my goal, but so I figured that, oh, she wants to talk about coffee. Maybe she. One of the galleries that she went to visit wants to carry my coffee. So I was, all right. Well, yeah, let's, you know, lay it on me. So we met up later that night, and she shared with me a vision that she had for her art and what she wanted to do, how she wanted to bring her art to Miami, her aspirations for it, then finally sharing an organizational chart that she had for it. And at the top was me as her manager. I was flattered by it. I was flattered looking at it. I was like, all right, well, thank you. And she had me as a manager. And she said, well, you know what? You're good with people. You create relationships. And I feel like you could really convey and sell the artwork. So I'm like, all right, so you want me to go into these places and sell your artwork? Well, she said, well, yes. I was like, okay, interesting. And then she went on. She kept talking, talking, talking. At the very end, she says, well, how does that sit with you? I stayed quiet for a few seconds. I said, well, it doesn't really sit well at all because I'm doing my own thing. I don't have the bandwidth to give that energy to you, because even in the down, there's always a cost. I said, but if you have any questions, I'd be more than happy to mentor you. I'd be more than happy to answer you and guide you. And she's like, okay, okay. Looking on that list, she also had one of my friends, my friend Fatih Fatih. She had him as a creative director. And I hope I'm saying this, chances are she'll probably end up listening to this podcast. But this would be a good lesson for everybody, right? Even her, too, because some people may align with her, but in this case, like me. I know me and my friend, we weren't aligned. And she had Fatih as a creative director, and he is flooded with business, doing carpentry. And I shared him. I was like, oh, you know, you're. You know, she has you as the creative director. And he's like, well, with what time? There's no time. I'm doing my own thing. I'm building my business. And then she had one more person, a friend of mine. Well, she had everyone I knew, but there's one person that I had talked to in pretty depth, in good depth, and I was sharing with him because, you know, I'll put his name on. His name is Norton. So Norton I had met at the hostel, and Norton is very bright, very. He has this kind of like this Gary Vaynerchuk kind of personality to him. He's raw, genuine, and just like A very. A kind, raw, genuine, smart and intuitive person. I don't remember what his role on the chart, but I was aware of what his aspirations for his life were. Seeing him in the hallway, I went up to him, I said, hey, you know, I was like, I wanted. You know, let's talk. We were going to set a time to talk about my business, too, and him helping me with the social media. And then we were talking about the. About this project. I said, listen, I'm not telling you anything. I'm not telling you what to do. I'm not telling you anything, but I want to tell you this. I said, if you don't have a plan for your life, someone else does. And then I want to tell him, like how. Like what? Like all the strengths, all of the. The qualities that I see in him and that I believe in him, that I know that whatever he sets out to do, if he sets out to build a social media company, that I know beyond the reason of a doubt that he'll be able to do it. His eyes started to well up a little bit, because I could tell, like so many people, that they have an aspiration, but they lack some of the confidence in himself. Is actually one of the first questions he asked me when he met me was, how did I get the confidence to come on and do this podcast? And that'll be a separate episode. But I told him one of the inspirations behind it is sharing information and inspiring people to go after the passion to pursue and create the lives that they love. So that was one case. And that was one case. Now, the reason why I say this is because she had a vision and she was trying to bring us into that. So maybe it was aligned with some people, but misaligned for other people. It was misaligned for me and definitely my friend. And knowing what my. My other friend, what his aspirations were as well, I didn't give him. I didn't tell him what to do. I posed a question to let him figure it out for himself, that it was aligned. But while I was here in Miami, I was walking around, I was meeting. I'm meeting people everywhere, and everyone was offering me jobs to work at restaurants. Jobs do different things. And at first I was like, well, you know, everyone's off the. But they're. I was kind of getting frustrated because I'm like, well, everyone's making these offers, and I. And I can't do them. But then I realized, well, it's because it's not aligned with my vision. You know, there's Gonna be temptations to veer off that path all over the place. And especially if you have that people pleasing aspect which I used to have, you're gonna be pulled to say, oh, yeah, you know what? Yeah, I'll help you out for one day. And then one day is gonna be five weeks and five years. And then now your life has gone in a completely different path that you never planned of in the first place. So the reason why I tell you this is I just want you to be aware. Even my, even my friend Fatih, he was like, oh, you know what, I'm getting a lot of business now. You know, you could help me in carpentry since you have experience. I was like, not a chance in hell. I don't need. I, you know, yeah, I can do it. Yeah, I enjoy it, but it's not aligned with my vision again. So the reason I'm telling you this is so that you can get clear about what your vision is for your own life. So this way you can look at everything that's out there, all the opportunities, all the people want to help you want something or things that you want, and you can narrow it down and take decisive action towards the outcome that you desire. Because again, I'll say it because you can't say it enough. If you don't have a plan for your life, someone else does. If you don't have a plan for your life, someone else does. So let's kind of hone it in, right? I've asked in several podcasts in the past, I said, what is it that you want? And you'd be like, all right, well, I want more money. You might have said something very generic, but I'm going to ask you a series of questions right now. We're kind of going to get fine tuned, right? So we're going to bring it in because what we really want, I believe that all we all want is emotion. And it's a matter about kind of narrowing these things that we want down and getting to the source, the nectar, like the sucre. I don't even know what sucre mean. I think that means nectar, but getting to the essence of what it is. So take out a piece of paper. What is it that you want? Now you can take this question. You could apply it to, you could apply it to your health, you could apply it to all the different areas of your life, but let's use life as a bucket right now, right? What is it that you want? Likely you're going to say things like freedom, you're going to say things like money. And that's fine. So we're going to narrow it down. Next, I want you for the question number two, I want you to look at your answers to that initial question, and I want you to look for these vague things like money, right? Money is very vague, right? Here's. Here's $5. Go ahead, get the hell out of here. What is it that. What is it? The money? How much money you want? Oh, a million dollars. Okay, you got. You narrowed down. A million dollars. You want a million dollars. What do you want to do with that? A million dollars. Right, because money doesn't mean anything. Money, what we're after. We're not after money. We're after the experiences, the emotions that we think money will give us. All right, so what is it that you want the million dollars for? Oh, well, you know what? I never really thought about that. I wanted so I could get that apartment in Miami. All right, well, what is that apartment in Miami going to give you? And then you start to break this thing down. So what I want you to do is take the initial answer, look at the answers that, like the vagueness of those answers, and keep getting specific. Say, well, what does this mean? All right, the million dollars I want, you know, okay, well, what does that mean? What will it give you? Right? That's what we're trying to narrow down. What we're trying to drill down to is the why. Why do you want it? So. So many people want money, right? A million dollars. What do you want a million dollars for? So it give me freedom so I don't have to work, so I can give to other people, so I can give back, so I can create different businesses, so I can give to my family, you know? You know, all these things, those are the things you have to dig for. Cause those are the things that are gonna give you the emotion to pull you forward. Right? We're looking for the force of pull, not the force of push. Pushing gets exhausting. We want something that's gonna pull us towards our vision. And it comes first with having a clear vision and a clear why. That is it, guys. I hope you enjoyed this episode. If you did, please give it a thumbs up.
