Donny Rouse talks about building a fulfilling life through gratitude, journaling, and slowing down. He covers overcoming scarcity mindset and how deliberate time for meaningful activities improves creativity and well-being.
Hi guys. My name is Donny Rouse and you are listening to the podcast One Life Time for what Matters. If you are always in a rush to get things done, you are living in a place of scarcity and you're never going to be able to create a fulfilling life because of that scarcity aspect. When you think back to it, like when you're in that scarcity zone, right? It's like this adrenal rush. Like, are you really enjoying that moment? Are you really getting the most out of that moment? And we have to be careful because whenever we have that adrenal rush, it's an addict. It's a rush of energy, right? So we can get addicted to the energy. And as a result, we always kind of put things off and we wait that last minute because we know eventually we'll get it done, we'll plow through it, and then we'll feel really drained afterward. And that's an extreme case. But what I'm going to touch upon in this episode is more for like the day to day things in life, the things that really matter. Because if you're not putting your time, your conscious time into the things that matter most, you're literally missing out on the point of life, and that is to feel good. Earlier this week I picked up my journal again. I started journaling, doing gratitude, which I hadn't done in a while, but if you haven't done it, I highly encourage it. One of the reasons that I like doing gratitude in the morning is because it gets you thinking in a different way. Rather than thinking about what you have to do or whether or not you're going to be late and all these other things, you start to think about, well, what is it that I'm grateful for? And it's a good primer for your day because when you, right from the start, you start to look at things that you, that you're grateful for and why you're grateful for it. As a result, you start feeling good and that carries over and literally into everything else that you're going to do after that. So I had picked up the journaling again and as I was writing down, I felt this feeling inside, like, oh my God, you know, the morning started, I have to start doing the things that I have to do. And then I was putting like this pressure on myself to need to get things done when the truth of the matter was all the things I'd done. Like, it's kind of like the things I do week to week, right? The thing the normal day to day activities of my business, I can get them done. If I'm in the zone, I can get them done in a matter of, like, a couple hours, maybe, right? But when you're in the scarcity mindset, these little tasks seem to take much longer because, like, it's just a frantic way of thinking. So as I was journaling, I was going through my gratitude. I said, you know what? This. Why is it. Let's get in touch with the reasons for doing it in the first place. Why am I doing this? I'm doing it to give to myself first. Because I know that if I do the gratitude at the beginning of my day, it's going to transform my day. It's going to put my thoughts in the right place for me to get more creative and to bring other things into my life. So as I was journaling, I start with gratitude, and then I go into how I want my day to unfold, as well as things that I aspire to have in the future, experiences, and even, like, in even material possessions. So as I was writing, rather than rushing through it how I typically would, I started to take my time because I realized, you know what? This is a worthwhile experience. It's worth putting the time here and watching it on the. As I was making the pen strokes, I would literally watch myself form every single word. And as a result of doing that, I found myself feeling more relaxed, more peaceful. Well, I was like, well, isn't that true of everything we do? Right? Because sometimes we start an activity or a business or whatever it may be, because we like the way it makes us feel, and we want to make a difference in the lives and the world around us. But then we get to that place where all of a sudden we're trying to rush through it because we get into this mind space where there's too many things to do and you don't have enough time to do them. If that's where you are, I want to encourage you, literally, just stop, press the pause button, and connect with why you're doing it in the first place. A reason that's related, but in a different tangent, I was talking with one of my friends, and she was going on about her daughter, how, like, her daughter was at, like, 50,000 Instagram followers and then got another 20,000 Instagram followers in a period of, like, three months. There was a point where I was comparing myself to her. I was like, oh, my God, I think I have, like, 2,000 or a thousand or something like that. And I was getting all worked up. But then when I Stepped up. I took a step back. I was like, well, all right, let's be real Myself. Why am I doing what I'm doing in the first place? Well, you know what? I do the coffee business. I was doing the coffee because I wanted. Well, one, I love coffee. But two, I wanted to give people that experience, to slow down and to start their day and be like, bring consciousness their day. And then secondly, why do I do this? Because I want to inspire people to reach for their best lives, to having these life experiences and not to put them off, because life is happening now. When I got connected to the reasons why I was doing what I was doing, it slowed everything down. Just like the experience with my pen. As I was journaling, I connected to the reason why I was doing it in the first place. I was doing the journaling because I wanted to connect myself to the day. I wanted to feel my day. Because if you're not feeling your day, what is the point of being alive, right? If you're rushing through it, what is the point? So the same thing with the business. When I connected to what I wanted to give, all sudden, it gave more meaning to what I was doing in that instance. And I think it was like, at that time, I think I was packaging coffee, which I'm like, oh, damn it. I got to package coffee again. But then putting the meaning behind it, there was a different part of me that showed up. There was more love that went into bagging this and sealing it and, you know, folding it up all nicely for people taking the time. Let's bring that, like, that magnifying glass over your life. What is it that you do that typically you would really enjoy doing? But lately it seemed like it was more of a stressor, right? And the stress was coming again from that time constraint, that false time constraint that you've given yourself. And you might be saying, well, Donnie, I do have time constraints, right? I have children or I have to get to work. That's fine. I'm not saying that you don't have other obligations. What I'm saying is that I want you to show up differently for that task. Even say it's a journaling exercise, like I did. Sometimes my journaling exercises take. Take me 30 minutes. Say you only have 10. 10 minutes. Or let's cut it even shorter. Let's say you have five minutes, right? Five minutes of a conscious effort where you're literally there and you feel relaxed. Knowing that you have that five minutes is worth more than if you were doing 10 hours of journal where you had 10 hours, but your mind was focusing on everything you have to do outside of that 10 hours, right? You have all the time in the world, but you're so. You're thinking out in the future that, like, it literally, like, shrinks the time you have. And all of a sudden, like, you know, 10 hours. And you wrote one sentence. So it doesn't matter how much time you have, but how you show up and what I hope my intention of this episode is for you to really carve out and block the time for the things that matter most to you. You know, if it's journaling, I mean, there's nothing that's so small, even if it's making the cup of coffee and enjoying it for 10 minutes outside on your porch before you know your significant other or your kids or some people wake up, or before you start your day, making the time for the things that matter most to you, the things that are going to prime you and get you ready for your day so that you show up as the version of you. That is what the intention is. And I want you to know that by going there first, you're going to show up better in your day and things are going to just literally, you're going to get to a state of flow where everything is literally just going to flow. And you're like, wow, why is it so easy? And then when you look at, you're like, yeah, that's because I listened to the One Life podcast with Donny Rouse and he told me to take the thing time for the things that matter most to me. But really, you'll see that when you take the time just to give to yourself first. As a result of doing that, now your cup is full and you start to overflow into everything else. So that is it, guys. That's all I have for you guys today. I hope you enjoyed this episode and I hope you will bring that consciousness in and take the time for those little things. Because in the end, little things are the big things and it's going to literally impact how you show up to the rest of the world. Hope you enjoyed this.
