Donny Rouse talks about surrounding yourself with visual reminders to shift your mindset toward growth. He shares stories about travel and habit-building, and invites listeners to an upcoming workshop on planning your year and setting meaningful goals.
Hi guys. My name is Donny Rouse and you are listening to the podcast One Life. Writing on the walls. What you have in your room, such as your walls, even your bookcase, speaks volumes of who you are. Earlier today, I was doing work at a customer's house and on one of the walls I saw this picture of three women who were dressed in very, very fine clothing and they looked very high society. And as I was looking at this picture, I thought of the woman whose home we were doing work in. And I said, so interesting. If this was the focus, what she looked at every single day and who she was as a person, at least how I know her, it kind of like this self fulfilling prophecy. Not the picture I would want on my wall. But it was that contrast that made me notice it. And then I thought to myself, well, how important is it to have these reminders as to who we are and what we want to become in our life? The answer is very important and for several reasons. The biggest reason is that by having these reminders all around us, especially when we wake up from first thing in the morning, is that it immediately puts us in a positive state. And point number two is that positive state then primes us. And if you don't know what priming is, priming is that thing when you maybe you normally rush out to work and you are, you're always in this like very, very chaotic mood when you get into work because you know there's a lot of things to do. But on this particular day, your daughter came up to you or someone and said, daddy, daddy, daddy, can I have a hug before work? I love you so much. All of a sudden you've been primed. That prime is a shifting of your focus and how you're seeing the world in that moment. And all of a sudden everything that follows afterward. This is kind of like flowers and fairy dust. The same thing is like when you're, when you fall in love. When you fall in love, you're seeing it through a different filter. You're primed. So everything that comes after that, the world could fall apart, but you still feel great. We could do that in our day to day by putting things around our room that when we look at them without even being conscious of it, they make us feel good. And lastly, when we put these things up, they focus, they help us focus on who it is we want to become. And more importantly, for this whole podcast of being one life, the things you want to experience in our one life. For case in point, one of the things I would get in the habit of doing, especially when I was in really, really terrible moods. And this past year had a lot of those moods because I would wake up in a funk just because I feel like there's this whole energetic kind of like, tidal wave that's like, that's enveloped the entire world. And as a result of that, you have to figure out ways to get yourself out of that funk. One of the ways I did that was I would look at pictures from my travels, and these were pictures going back even, like, probably decades ago. But every time I would take a look at these photos, I would immediately start smiling, and it would change my state in an instant. And as a result of that change state, now I'm primed. Everything that comes thereafter now comes with a different energy. Things that were hard all of a sudden become easy. And then I remember what I am focused on, which is pretty much experiencing life and sharing that message with you guys. And one of the big ones is traveling, which in another priming, another priming, and state change I do in the morning is I would have this beautiful pitcher atlas. And as I'm sipping my espresso, which is another one of those triggers I use, I would just read pages of this atlas. And as I would go through country by country, reading about each country, and by doing that, it's planting these seeds. And all of a sudden, I'm having experiences in my mind without ever having been to the place. And the likelihood of me following through as a result of that, even higher. Because now I'm, you know, like, that's the first thing that I'm seeing in my day. So knowing that we have this. This power, this ability to set ourselves up for the day, we have to first know, like, all right, so if we have the ability to create our days for the better, we need to become conscious of what are those things that we're doing that are bringing us down, that are pulling us down to the worst things, like responding to email. The first thing right when you wake up, you're on your phone, you're checking emails. How does that make you feel? Not that good. Especially when there's demands that are met of you, and that's the first thing that you're digesting in the morning. How about the news? The last four years, there's been a lot of, like, stuff. I mean, I always say you have to remember the news is there for a reason. I'm not sound to say fake and anything else. But the news, ultimately, what they want is ratings. They want viewers. So with that in Mind. What kind of things do you think they're going to put out there for you? Things that grab your attention. And what grabs our attention the most? Fear. So when we become fearful now, all of a sudden they've got us, they've got our attention. So where do you put your attention? And once you become conscious of where that attention goes, there's a process. They say whenever you're going to change anything, there's a process to it. First thing you have to do is you have to stop the pollution, stop the toxins, stop whatever it is that's coming in. The next phase is to cleanse and cleansing is getting rid of all those habits, those bad things that you do at the beginning of your day that throw you off and taking the time to actually separate and create new habits. And then you start to nurture. In that nurturing comes setting up new habits, new things that are priming you to feel good, that are priming you to remember the things that you want to experience, what you want to create. Who do you want to love? All those great things that make you feel warm and fuzzy inside. So if you're with me up until this point, now we're going to get into that nitty gritty and we're going to create some of those. Who do you want to become? What do you want to experience? When I thought about, like creating, I have a few primers in my. In my bedroom. Not many, not as much as I should have, especially after doing this episode. But in my room I have like a picture of Granada that came from one of my best friends, my friend Lucas, who lives in Granada, Spain. Another friend of mine gave me this beautiful, beautiful photograph. Like a photo of California. Her name is Jody. And it has this train track going off almost towards the mountain, but on the left side you see the Pacific Ocean. It always reminds me of wanting to be by the water. One of the third thing, one of the most powerful things in my bedroom is my travel, my backpacker's backpack. I can't even tell you how many trips around the world I've been with this backpack and how many countries I've seen. So the moment I look at it, I'm triggered to like, oh my gosh, I gotta travel. I gotta get out there even if I can't travel in the next year. Just looking at it gives me like that euphoric, the feeling. So what are the feelings you want? What are the experiences you want to have? And as you think and you write those things down, what visuals, what reminders, what can you put into your life on a daily basis to remind you of what you want to remind me of what you want to create, to remind you what you want to give to mind, remind you what you want to experience? Everything goes so fast, so, so fast, especially when you get older. I don't know what it is. I mean, I don't have kids yet, but I would imagine that when you have kids, it's like fast forward to like times 10, even more. The reason that you need to take the time to do these things, because these are important. I mean, you know, it's like how much time do you get to spend with your family? What do you want them to experience in that time you have with them? Rather than trying to reprimand and make sure your kids grow up straight in the sense that you're putting them on the right path. I was on that path. And I'll tell you what, it didn't help my relationship with my parents, my father especially, because he was the one that was more the disciplinary. In fact, it actually made me feel more separate. But if we use the time differently, if he pride himself, what is it that I want to create? What kind of value? How do I want to spend this time with this person? And came from it, from that angle, I would assume that would be completely different. So what are the things that you could put into your life to remind you of what you want to create? The biggest one is probably going to be pictures, but here's another one, Cell phone alerts. And I mean I have a whole list of them. If you join the One Life podcast course that I'm going to be doing, it's a workshop, it's going to start, it's on January 9th. One of the things I'll touch upon in the course is how to set yourself up to win. Everything is competing for your attention. So it's up to us to decide where we're going to put our focus. Now, once you've decided what kind of pictures, alerts, whatever it is you're going to put into your, into your life to remind you of those things that are important to you, the things you want to experience in the life you want to live. Now it comes down to the implementation. Do those things you put on the list, don't just let them stand there, do those things. I promise, when you're feeling down, when you're feeling like things are off and you remember to go to these things, or you go into that room where you have all these pictures reminding you of the things that are important to you. Maybe a picture of your family, prior trip you went on, as well as future trips. When you go into that room, I promise you it's going to put you in a different place and all of a sudden you're going to be focusing on where you want to go and not what's happening in that moment. And that's powerful. I hope you really, really enjoyed this episode. It's about 12 o' clock in the evening on the day. I don't even know what today is. It's like the day before Thanksgiving. But I had made a promise to a friend that I was going to do one podcast and record one. I normally do a series of podcast recordings when I do them and then I schedule them. But lately it's been kind of difficult for me to get into that. So I said, you know what? I'm going to commit to one today. I will do it before the end of the day. And it's cutting it right on the edge. But I did it because one of the things that I want to do is I always want to give people that reminder to do the things that are important to them, to set themselves up to experience those things that they know that are going to make them feel alive and not put them off. Because the longer you put something off, the less likely you're ever going to take action towards it. And as I've said many times, is that life is finite. We all are on the same. We're all on a different journey. We all end up at the same destination. The difference we have, the difference is our journey. My intention for you is to set you on the right course, set you on your journey. Not the journey that was decided by society or your parents or anyone else, but the ones that's the one that's decided by you. That is it. Guys, I hope you enjoyed this podcast. If you did, please give it a thumbs up, screenshot it, share it with your friends on social media, especially those who you really, really care about and consider. Check out donnyrous.com again d o n n y r a u s.com there. You'll see. It's a. I just put the website up, but you'll see a link to subscribe to the workshop that's coming up January 9th. Go there and what we're going to do in that workshop is we're going to plan out your entire year. We're going to set some goals, we're going to see where you are, we're going to kind of do the gap analysis is like, what's been keeping you from fulfilling those goals. And we're going to create kind of like a new vision for your life for this year, and then we're going to set some new ones. But in the Donny Rouse method, which I promise you, everything I do, I pour my heart into it. And I have a feeling you will realize that when you attend. God bless, guys. Thank you so, so much for listening. And I wish you nothing but the best in 2021. God bless.
