You Only Live Once - Learn the One Word That Will Give You All the Experiences You Desire
13 Mar 2023 · 12 min
Donny Rouse left his corporate job to start a coffee company and now argues that one word—yes—unlocks the experiences you actually want. He pushes back against rigid routines and rigid thinking, saying spontaneity and saying yes to opportunities is how you find real joy.
Most people spend their entire life stressed without ever giving a single thought as to what it is they really want or what's important to them. See, I'm here to cut through all that noise connecting you to yourself and the life that you were meant to live. I used to slave away at a corporate job that I hated, but I broke through the social norms and pursued my passion. As a result, I own my own coffee company. I'm Espresso Sommelier, and I get to travel the world. You too can live a life that you love, but it starts with getting clear about what you want. It starts with a new decision. I'm your host, Donnie Rouse, and you are listening to the podcast One Life, You Only Live Once. This post here is more of a random. Or actually, I should. I can do that. I can't even speak. Let's start that over. So this post here is more of a rant, actually. It's an invitation for you to just open up and start to say yes to life. I really do believe that life is always happening for you. Life is always presenting you with things to move you forward. But it's the resistance that we get in that we prevent these things from flowing into our lives. We literally are. We're blocking off the livelihood that is trying to make us more aware of the things we're passionate about, the things we want to experience. And what I want you to get into your mind is the idea that you only live once. When you think about that, how does that make you want to experience life? When you think of you only live once, how does that open up your experiences in terms of what would you say yes to? What would you do that maybe just one moment before, before repeating this, you weren't really open to doing a couple weeks ago? And literally, I feel like the last few weeks this phrase has been coming into my life over and over. It started at a cafe. I was doing a delivery to one of my accounts, considering having an espresso. And I was, but you know what, it's late in the day. I just had an espresso earlier. I don't think I should do it, but I really want one. And the manager who was on said, you know what? Just do it, man. You only live once. And I thought about that. I was like, he's got a point, you know, I do only live once. So I ordered the espresso, had a great conversation with the barista behind the counter, and it ended up being one of the highlights of my day. Fast forward. I was out with a friend we hadn't seen each other in a while and we went out for a drink. I don't really drink, or I should say, I enjoy engaging in a drink. But when I'm here, home, I don't really allow myself to do that because I get in this very rigid way of living because I'm like, well, no, I'm not going to do this because it's going to negate all my workouts. It's kind of like a slippery slope. So in a way, it's kind of shutting off, experiencing life in some way. And I'm not saying that I don't do anything in excess except for. Well, I get disciplined. I do some things in excess. But drinking is not one of those. Out with this friend, we kind of were playing back and forth. We were like, oh, well, should we go to a different bar? We're like, well, no, I don't know. Well, you know what? You only live once. All of a sudden we're like, all right, yeah, fine, let's go. And we go to the next bar. And then something else would come up and the phrase would come up again, like, well, you know, you only live once. All right, well, screw it, let's go do it. That night ended up taking us to different bars, different restaurants, different locations. And it was this idea of just saying yes to life, saying yes to what comes in. Well, how often do you turn life down? How often do you say no to life because you don't have the time, because you have to be somewhere, you have to do something, or really, you're just your list, you're filled up with have to's. So as a result, you're literally shutting out all the magic that life has to offer you. Life is trying to give you because you're stressed out with the things that you gotta do, and most of which probably don't even matter. And if you stop doing them, they would literally disappear from your life. Life. So you only live once. Or what if you only had today? Different question, like, what would you value? What would you do differently? Different question, but even more powerful because now you're like, well, if there was only today, would I be doing the same thing that I'm doing? Would I be in the same job? Would I be in this relationship? Would I be living in the same state? How would you live life differently? I think on a deep level, we all know what the life is that we want to live. We all know what our ideal lives would be. I think there's a statistic that says we have A general feeling for what it is that we want. But when it comes down to asking for specifics, not many people know. Kind of one of the reasons why I'm doing the One Life course is to acquaint people with some specificity as to what it is they want in the different categories of their life. But we can say, yes, we have a general sense. We may not know specifically, but we have a general sense as to what we like or how we want to live. But how many people are actually living that? How many people do you know in your life that are actually living that on some level? I'm willing to say that very few. But if you ask that question, well, what if today is all there is? What if today was the last day? What would I do differently? And just see what comes up, right? Maybe it's not even changing a career or something so drastic, but maybe just changing how you experience the day, what you're willing to experience. Meaning, like, maybe it's, you know, you have a child and, you know, you never make time to play with them. They're asking, you know, it wouldn't take that much time, right? Because really, if you give your presence to them, maybe five, 10 minutes, maybe even longer than that, but still, right, you can cut it. You could cut out some of that social media time, and then you have the hour or three hours for some people. How would you live life differently? Again, the intention here is just for you to look at your life through a different lens, a different filter by asking a different question. Because the reality is, I mean, it's true, not a single day is for granted. Not a single day is guaranteed. And while sometimes you may not have the resources, say, oh, you know, I'm going to go travel here, I'm going to do that. But I do believe whatever you're determined, whatever you set your heart on and you can do, and while at this moment you may not be able to do certain things, you can show up your day and you could start to create. You can start to say, how do I want to live my life? What are the steps that I could take in order to live that way? It first requires some conscious thought. It first requires you to sit down and really ask yourself what it is that, what do I want? So many, so many, few people actually even ask that. What is it that you want? I was listening to a post on some of my own podcasts, right? Sometimes I'll cycle through and I'll just kind of listen because I will say things on here that are learnings that I've learned. But sometimes I forget those learnings. I go through them. I'm like, oh, my God. Yeah, I remember when I thought that what caused this thinking. And literally, I'll go through the episode and I'll ask myself those questions that I ask in the episode. And sometimes the answers astonish me. One of those questions was around my coffee business in terms of what society says you have to do. And literally, it's a limited mindset saying, well, all right, if I grow the company, this is how I have to experience the company. This is how I have to work. But it's not true. And this, I should say that this was inspired by a conversation I had with a consultant. The truth is, well, no, I get to decide that, right? I am living the life I want to live. I am traveling while I'm building my brand, because I know that no time is. There's nothing that's taken for granted. Not a single day is guaranteed. So I want to travel, I want to see all these things, and I'm okay doing it at a different pace as long as it's not making me miss out on life. I don't want you to miss out on life. So my challenge for you today, or I should say the intention for you, is to set the intention. When things show up in your day that are unexpected, that you want to do, but then all of a sudden you say, yeah, but I can't, because you have to go to the gym and you start to the rigidity of your schedule starts to filter out the other opportunities, the other magic that could flow into your day. I want you to say yes to those things. I want you to break the rigidity. Whether, you know, maybe it's yoga, maybe it's actually something like meditation or something that you're using, but you're like, ah, no, but I do this. And I understand it could be a grounding, A grounding experience or routine that you have. But I want you just to start to allow different things to emerge to come into your life. Different people, different experiences. That is what is going to change your life. Not the repetitive things. I mean, I'm no knock on meditation. I do it every day, I work out every day. But that isn't what's going to. I mean, those are all great things, good routines and positive habits to have. But if I'm too rigid to them, those aren't, you know, and it's closing out other things that are trying to make their way into my life, then they're not really serving me Say yes to life. That is the one thing I want you to get from this. Say yes to life and just watch what unfolds. I hope you enjoyed this post. If you did, please give it a thumbs up. Give it a share.
