This is a YouTube video titled "Carl Richards' Sketches #personalfinance #wealth #finance #financialfreedom #money" containing a monologue by Carl Richards recorded in August 2024. In the video, Carl Richards explains how he began using sketches and visual aids to communicate complex financial concepts effectively, describing an initial experience with doctors that inspired his approach and led to his work being featured by the New York Times.
So why the sketches? Why that visual component? How did you get into that? You know what's interesting is this started sitting across the table from a doctor, and I was trying to explain a concept to them that I thought was really important, and I was getting nowhere. And I remember having the distinct feeling of like, wait, these are two really smart, intelligent people, and if I'm just getting blank stares, they're not the problem. And so, out of an act, honestly, an act of desperation with those exact people, there was a whiteboard in the office that I was using. It was a whiteboard. I stood up, I was like, no, like this. And I drew, like, squares and arrows. And I remember they say, there's name Dave and Diane. And I remember Dave was like, oh, oh, I get it now. So I sort of became addicted to that feeling of insight. So I did it again, and then I did it again, and I did it again, and I did it again, and then I started doing it in public. And then the editor at the New York Times said, hey, we love these. Would you do them for us? And I knew well enough to say yes to that.
