Dr. Lara and Dr. Lera Clone follow up on an abscess treatment for an older English bulldog named DeOrr. They placed a drain and culture during incision to prevent the pocket from returning, and explain that drains typically stay in for 3 to 5 days. DeOrr, an older English bulldog.
Good morning, guys. My name is Dr. Lara here at Heron Lakes Animal Hospital Today. Today I'm here with DeOrr. And so Deora is an older English bulldog.
He came in because he had this big swelling, nasty kind of looking thing on his neck. And so what we did was we went ahead, we have a video where we made an incision into the growth and we placed this drain and we collected what's called a culture or like a Q tip. And so we. One of the reasons that I'm showing you this is typically these drains, we don't want to leave them in any longer than maybe three to five days because then there's a possibility that this may lead to an infection in and of itself. We have this in here so that way all the tissue in this area can reconnect underneath because otherwise it may just create this big old pocket and it'll be hard for the body to go ahead and heal it. And so what we're going to do is we're going to go ahead and remove this drain today. Now, one of the things that I told mom and dad is that this tissue right here, it feels very hard. And so that means that it may actually die. And so that's one of the things to take into consideration. If you have like a big abscess or something like that, the tissue may actually die later. And so it's just something to be aware of. It's not necessarily that the infection is coming back or that your veterinarian did something wrong or that you didn't take care of it. It just has to do more with.
The fact that if the skin is really stretched, then it may lead to tissue necrosis and it may not happen immediately. It may take a few days for that to actually happen.
