Dog Vomiting During Immunotherapy

Rio started vomiting after his owners switched him to a raw diet while he was undergoing immunotherapy for allergies. Dr. Lera Clone recommends consulting a veterinary nutritionist before changing diets, and investigating if vomiting lasts more than a week. Some allergy medications like Atopica can cause temporary vomiting for 7 to 10 days.

Hey, guys, My name is Dr. Lehrer here at Heron Lakes Animal Hospital. Today I'm here with Rio. Rio came in for a couple of issues. First, he came in because he's having an allergy flare up. And secondly, he came in because he's been vomiting. We did a video already about his allergies, and now we're doing a video about the vomiting. Now mom and dad switched him from a kibble diet to a raw diet. And so one of my recommendations is when you're doing or if you decide to do a raw diet, even in the face of all these concerns about cardiac disease, is try to find a place if it's a mom and pop shop that works with a veterinary nutritionist, it's not super hard. Even online you can find veterinary nutritionists. There's one@balanceit.com I do not get any referral fees for you going there. And you can ask them for recipes and you can even go to the raw spot are replaced to make the recipe for you. Now he is vomiting. We do suspect that he is potentially vomiting. From that and from the research that has been done by my client, he was saying that there are a lot of people are saying that maybe they'll be vomiting for a week or so. Make sure that if you are having some vomiting, you talk to your veterinarian about how long it is before they become uncomfortable that they are vomiting for a period of time. For me personally, if they're vomiting for a week, I'm done. I want to know what the deal is, what's going on. I want to rule things out and if it's just tied to the food, that's fine. Same thing can happen with certain medications. There's an allergy medication called Atopica where the dermatologist will say, hey, they can vomit for anywhere between a week to 10 days on this particular medication and then they'll get over it. So it's not unheard of, but it is something to be aware of. And so if he does continue to vomit for the next few days, we are going to actually do some testing on him, like blood work and X rays to make sure that he doesn't have anything serious going on. If you guys have any questions or concerns about this particular topic or maybe some of the stuff with switching from raw foods or to raw foods, let me know. Thanks for watching. If you guys found this helpful, give us a thumbs up, share it and like it. Have a great day.
