How To Give Your Dog Eye Medications

Dr. Lera shows how to apply eye medication to dogs without stress. Approach from behind so your dog can't see the applicator coming, use gentle restraint on the head, and if you're using multiple medications, save the ointment for last.

My name is Dr. Lara at Heraron Lakes Animal Hospital, and this is Miley. Miley's coming in today for a recheck of her eye. And so Miley's eye is getting better. But the purpose of today's video is for us to go ahead and just give you an example of one of the best ways to go ahead and apply eye medication. One of the things that you want to be aware of is when you're applying eye medication to your dogs or your cats, you don't want to come straight at the eye. I'm not going to do the straight at the eye thing with Miley because that'll kind of make her a little bit more nervous. But you want to come more from behind the eye. Cause if they can't see it coming, then. Oh. And it's something that's a lot more tolerable for them. And so this is going to be one of the tricks or one of the techniques that we use here at Hand Lakes Animal Hospital to go ahead and help make sure that we medicate the patients as best as possible. So you'll come over here, we'll go ahead and I'll demonstrate for you. I'll have you stand over here, actually. Sorry, that was my bad. Okay. All right, Good girl. So then what we'll do is if you want, you can come close. And so this is going to be an ointment. So we'll come over here, you'll see.
You'Ll kind of put your hand on top of the head, pull back the skin a little bit and then just kind of squirt it on there. And then that's pretty much it. And it's not really something that's super technical.
It's just more about getting some of it in the eye. You'll see there's a little bit of extra goop that'll go away with ointments. If you have multiple eye medications, you're going to want to put the ointment on last, most likely just because it's going to be harder for the liquids to kind of get through to the cornea. So if you guys have any other questions that you want discussed, or if you have any particular questions about this particular procedure or eye medications in general, just leave it in the comment box and we'll get back to you guys later. Alright, have a good night and thanks for watching.
