How to Read Pet Feeding Charts

Heron Lakes Animal Hospital shows how to use pet food charts: find your pet's weight on the left, age across the top. Feeding amounts often drop as puppies reach 8-12 months. Adult dogs need roughly 2 3/4 to 3 1/8 cups daily depending on weight, assuming no treats or table food.

Hey guys, My name is Dr. Lehrer here at Heron Lakes Animal Hospital. Today I'm just going to be talking to you really quick about feeding charts on your dog or cat's pet food. So if you guys come over here, I'm going to talk to you about the puppy and kitten feeding chart.
And so you'll notice on the left side you're going to see the weight. And then on the top columns over here you're going to see the age. And so what you'll notice is let's say you have a 45 pound dog, that's four to seven months. Once that 45 pound dog or 50 pound dog jumps over to eight to 12 months, you're actually going to be feeding less over here. And the reason being is because now at this point they are pretty close.
To full grown and they are not going to need as many calories, as many vitamins and nutrients as they would when they're full, when they're fully in their puppy stage of growing and just devouring all those calories and nutrients. This is a guideline. It is not something that is a end all, be all. So you may continue to feed more, you may need to feed less. It's just something that is a good place to start. And then you're going to use that to go from there. Over here you're going to see the adults.
This is going to be a good example of what an adult feeding chart is and it's going to be pretty straightforward. You'll come over here, you'll take a look at this and you'll say, hey, I have a 40 pound dog. So we're between 33 and 44. And then you'll come over here and it's typically going to give you a range. It's going to be 2 and 3/4 up to 3 and 1 8. This is once a day. This is not twice a day feeding, guys. So remember that that is assuming that.
They also get no table food, no, no treats, just that. So if you are incorporating some of that other stuff in there, make sure that you go ahead and you try and reduce the calories that you're giving them from the dog food. All right? At the end of the day when you need something and you want to be as precise as possible, if you.
Come in right here, every bag that has the dental chart or the feeding charts is going to have amount of kilocalories per cup. And this is something that will be very helpful for you to figure out how much of this particular food to.
Give to your pet based on how much they weigh. If you guys have any questions or concerns, please give us a thumbs up. Subscribe and share with others. Thanks for watching and have a great day.
