Is Pet Dental Insurance Worth It?

Dr. Lera Clone explains why most pet insurers won't cover existing dental disease. Periodontal disease is extremely common in small breeds, but insurers typically treat diagnosed tartar or gum disease as pre-existing. Coverage rules vary by company: Trupanion, Embrace, and ASPCA each have different requirements to lift that exclusion, so check before you buy.

Questions this video answers

Trupanion: non-anesthetic scaling and polishing; Embrace: either non-sedated or sedated scaling depending on veterinarian recommendation; ASPCA: requires general anesthesia (sedated) scaling and polishing.

Small/toy breeds (examples given: schnauzers [miniature], miniature poodles, Chihuahuas, Yorkies; any breed described as "miniature", "toy", or "teacup").
