Hey, guys, My name is Dr. Lara here at Heron Lakes Animal Hospital. Today I'm just going to comment on Bordetella, otherwise known as kennel cough vaccine. And so kennel cough is a multitude of different organisms that can cause some different symptoms, like coughing, like nasal discharge, like not feeling well. And so one of the reason I'm bringing this up today is because one of my clients was coming here and their previous veterinarian was saying that they needed to get the Bordetella vaccine every six months. And to my understanding, and when I researched it, it's not necessarily required to have the vaccine every three months, nor do I actually recommend it or six months. Rather, the new recommendations are to give the vaccine once every 12 months. Now, there was a time frame where we did think that the vaccines did have to be given every six months. Now those recommendations or that data has changed, and now we realize that the vaccine is good for 12 months. The only time that you will need to go ahead and have the vaccine given every six months is if you're taking your dog somewhere and the facility that you're taking your dog to wants that vaccine updated every six months. Then at that point you do have to go ahead and follow their rules. And so therefore, you will most likely have to give the vaccine every six months. That being said, the vaccine is supposed to be good for 12 months. So my recommendation, if you do have a dog that is going to areas and they are interacting with other dogs and therefore at a higher risk of developing or acquiring any of these organisms like Bordetella, or any of the other diseases or organisms that can cause the kennel cough clinical signs, then my recommendation is only giving it once every 12 months, once they've received their boosters, from the time that they're a puppy.
