Dr. Lara from Heron Lakes Animal Hospital explains why you need a vet you trust, using Dewey, a 7-year-old French bulldog with back pain, as an example. Never give your dog aspirin or NSAIDs on your own. If you have, wait 3 to 5 days before starting other anti-inflammatories to avoid vomiting, diarrhea, and ulcers.

Hey guys, My name is Dr. Lara.
Here at Heron Lakes Animal Hospital.
Today I'm here with Dewey.
Dewey is a 7 year old French bulldog. And Dewey's coming in today because mom.
Is noticing that he was kind of.
Painful in this area over here.
And so what ended up happening when.
We French bulldogs, as we've mentioned in previous videos, are very prone to back problems, just like dachshunds, better known as wiener dogs. And so when I was doing my physical examination, I found that he seemed.
To be painful kind of in this.
Area over here, in the middle of his back, which I mentioned in the.
Past is very, very common because that's.
The area where there's the least amount of support versus over here and here you're going to have more support from both of the legs.
So one of the things that has happened in the past when I've spoken to different clients and different veterinarians is that they've noticed that sometimes it'll be.
Recommended to the clients or people will research online that it's okay to give certain medications to dogs or their pets.
And so what I really want to illustrate to clients is it's very, very critical, important that you have a great.
Relationship with your veterinarian because they should be a resource for you to ask.
Hey, I'm not able to come in today.
Can I go ahead and do this, this and this?
And so I know at the heart a lot of times what we want.
To do is we want to try and relieve the pain.
And so mom and dad g him.
Some aspirin, which at the end of.
The day isn't going to hurt his.
Liver or his kidneys or anything like that.
But when we go to head to.
Give treatment for him, either non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs or steroids to try.
And reduce inflammation on a potential spinal cord injury that can pose a little bit of a problem that might make.
Him more prone to developing vomiting or.
Diarrhea, where Dewey is already prone to.
That kind of stuff. And so sometimes in an ideal scenario.
What you would do is you would have what's called a three to five.
Day washout period where that means that.
He'S not on aspirin and he's not on anything else for about three to.
Five days like steroids or non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs.
The reason being is because we want.
To reduce the chances of that vomiting diarrhea, to reduce any sort of chances of ulcers as well.
So at the end of the day, what I really want to drive home is that it's really, really critical to have a great relationship veterinarian and your veterinarian team so that way they can help you in aiding and taking care of your babies.
