Hey, guys. My name is Dr. Lehrer here at Heron Lakes Animal Hospital. Today I'm here with Sadie. Right? Sadie is a little mixed breed dog, and she's coming in today for a puppy visit. But one of the things mom was talking about was chewing. Yes, you do the same thing, huh? So Mom, I'm gonna put her down because she's more comfortable being on the ground and running around like a puppy. So mom is concerned or brought up the concern that she's chewing on a lot of different things. And so what I typically tell people is there's a couple of different approaches or a multifaceted or multi pronged approach that we can take in terms of when dogs are chewing. First things first. You want to try and figure out what they're chewing on. Obviously, that's going to be pretty easy. Mom. One of the things that mom said was that she was chewing on carpet. So I would think that you would want to find toys that mimic these particular textures that they're chewing on in your house. And the reason being is because for one reason or another, either A, it feels good on their gums when they're chewing on it, or B, it's fun for them to pull on. And so one of the things, for example, when you have a dog like her that's chewing on carpet, what I would try and do is maybe find like a rope toy or something like that that might go. Excuse me. That might go ahead and help mimic that texture. The other thing that you're going to want to do is the other reason they're going to be chewing on things is because they're puppies and they have a bunch of energy. And so what ends up happening is you want to go ahead and get them to expend that energy. So you want to play with them. If you don't have a bunch of time to play with them because you got home from work, you're tired in the morning, you got to leave before the sun comes up, you got to take care of kids, you got to pack the lunches, all that kind of stuff. For a busy person who has a normal life in this rat race, one of the things we'll want to consider are what are called food puzzles. And so food puzzles are things like this. This is not a sponsor. This is just different products. And so what will happen is these particular toys are made to go ahead and for you to either put treats or food in them. So depending on the size of the dog, the kibble might be too big to come out. And so this is something else where this is a little bit bigger. And this is something where you will be able to go ahead and maybe get them to get the kibble. Depending on the size of it, you'll want to check out first to make sure that the kibble can come out of your toy and get them to feed off of this. Because what's going to have to happen is they're going to have to use mental energy. And I don't know when the last time was that you guys took a long test or test, but it's exhausting. You feel like you were running for like an hour at least. And that's what we're trying to achieve. We're trying to achieve expending all that energy from the puppy, so that way we can go ahead and get them to not want to chew on stuff because they're bored. This is one of the different kinds of toys. Now, if you guys look at this toy, you'll see it's hard. The only reason I like this toy is if as long the dog. As long as the dogs cannot get this toy around their. The back of their mouth. So this will be the perfect size for her, even though it looks a little big, because these kinds of toys, they can potentially end up breaking their teeth. And that's not what I want to do. This is one last toy, you guys. If you're handy, I'm sure there's a bunch of do it yourself dog puzzle videos. This is another one. This one's not going to take them as long to go through. So this is just more for dogs that are vomiting. But again, this is an example of a food puzzle. Okay. At the end of the day, you want to go ahead, you want to get them to expend that energy, and you want to try and find the toys that mimic the texture of what they're chewing on in your house.
