How To Rebuild Your Life After Losing Everything Financially - MAXXED-OUT EVENT

In this high‑energy keynote at the MAXXED‑OUT event, Dr. Toby Potter shares a raw, first‑person chronicle of building a mortgage empire, losing it all in the 2008 financial crisis, and rebuilding through insurance sales, the founding of Global Integrity Finance (GIFT), and a series of personal setbacks—including the COVID‑19 shutdown and a severe rotator‑cuff injury. Interweaving biblical verses (Jeremiah 29:11, Matthew 7:7) with hard‑won business lessons, he outlines a three‑tiered engagement model—Interested, Committed, Obsessed—emphasizing self‑responsibility, relentless accountability, and the necessity of mentors/coaches. He details concrete strategies such as pivoting to residential refinancing when interest rates hit historic lows, and illustrates his obsessive work ethic by dramatically accelerating his physical recovery. Throughout, he urges the audience to reject excuses, claim their entitlement to wealth and freedom, and adopt an obsessive, faith‑driven mindset to rebuild any lost life.

What's up, dope? From the audience. Yeah, he loves me. My man, my man. Can I have your hand tight right here? This is just to take you up for an interview. Yeah. Okay, so just hang tight until he goes on. Let's go! Let's go! Let's go! Let's go! Let's go! How y'all doing? Yes, sir! Yeah! Are you fired up? Yeah! So I've been losing my voice for 2 weeks, and I've told it, it has to stay at least through today. So bear with me. So maxed out. Let me ask you real quick, what is the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear the words maxed out? Come on, somebody. Hit your limit. Credit cards, right? Exactly. Maxed out. Not today. Today we're going to turn that definition that's showing you how you can achieve everything you've ever wanted in life. How many here would love to have an amazing life of financial wealth and freedom? Raise your hands. Come on. How many here want to create a lifestyle that allows you to go and do whatever you want and to know that not only your children but your grandchildren are taken care of? Raise your hand. Come on. Now, how many here already have that? Exactly. Let me share with you a real quick story. In 1994, I got married. And in 1995, my first child was born. And I decided at that moment in time that the life that I wanted wasn't— I wasn't achieving it. And so I learned that the decisions I make should shape my life, but that the life that I wanted should shape my decisions. And I realized right then and there that this was not the life I wanted, that I wasn't going to allow my child grow up without her dad around, because I was working a career that wasn't giving me everything that I wanted to give to them. And I knew I had to make a change, so I did. And I got into the mortgage industry, and I started a mortgage company. I started a RE/MAX franchise. I bought a title company and had an appraisal company. And life was great. Holy cow, life was amazing. It was like going to work every day and just printing money. I had a 50-foot yacht. We had a big house, our custom-built house. We had it all. We were young. We had now 2 kids. We— there was never a fear. And then the financial crisis of 2008 came. And just like that, I was homeless with a wife and two kids because, see, I didn't know what I didn't know. I didn't know that this was going to go on forever. It was the mortgage industry. Everybody needed a house. And banks don't go out of business until they do. And I lost it all. I lost it all. And I remember after being mad, being pissed, crying out to God saying, why? What did we do wrong? And it wasn't what we did wrong. It's what we didn't do right. And I just, I didn't understand how I could create from nothing to something and lose it all on something I had absolutely no control over. I had no control over Wall Street, over mortgage-backed securities, over all the frauds and the defaults and all that. I had no control. But because of that, I lost it all. And I wasn't a happy camper. There came a time where I realized that being pissed, being mad, pouting around was never going to get me to where I needed to be. So one final day, I dropped to my knees and I said, "God, if you brought me here, I know you didn't bring me here just to leave me here. So what's next?" Where do we go? What do we do? See, I'm a firm believer in everything in Scripture. Jeremiah 29:11 says, "I know the plans I have for you, the plans to prosper you, not to harm you." I know Matthew 7:7 says, "Seek and you will find. Knock and the door will be opened. Ask and it will be given to you." See, I know all these verses, and I've known them since I was 10 years old, but here I was, a father, a husband, a provider who had lost it all and didn't know what to do. And then one day, after I had dropped to my knees several times, it dawned on me. See, there's nobody in this audience, there's nobody on this stage, there's nobody out there that's going to get you what you want in life. Nobody. If you think there is, I'm sorry, I'm here to tell you there is nobody going to get you what you want in life except for you. And so at that moment in time, I wrote on a sticky note that it said, "If it's going to be, it's up to me." And I stuck that sticky note on my car, on the visor, and every day I read that. And I slowly started rebuilding. I finally found a job. Now understand this: after owning a mortgage company, a RE/MAX franchise, and a title company for 10, 12, 14 years, and that industry going belly up, ain't nobody hiring you. You got no resume. You got no history. So the only job I could find was an all-commission in sales for insurance. But I understood that if it's going to be, it's up to me. I have a fiduciary duty, an obligation to provide for my family first, to be able to go and do whatever it takes. And I learned early in life there's 3 types of people. And I want you to ask yourself, which category do you fall into? Are you interested? See, all y'all raise your hands. Are you interested in having everything that you're entitled to in life? Are you interested to having financial wealth? Are you interested in having financial freedom and never ever having to worry? Are you interested? Yes, we all are. Next question is, but are you committed? Are you committed? And see, committed people will do whatever it takes. You've heard so many people stand up here. Randy Goodwin talk about living in his car that he was too big to fit in. Doing whatever it takes because he knew his calling. He knew his purpose. He knew his dream. And nothing was gonna stop him. He was committed. But see, the real committed people go to the third category that I wanna talk to you about. They become obsessed. See, obsessed people, they eat, sleep, drink nonstop their goals, their dreams, their ambition, their belief. They fully understand. They never ever sit over here and say, well, it just isn't in my family tree. You know, my parents were broke. I'm not smart enough. I'm not talented enough. Committed people say, tell me, show me, let's do it. Interested people come up with excuses. Obsessed people Don't ever look back. Regardless. I became obsessed. I knew what it felt like to have wealth. I knew what it felt like to never worry about money. And I knew that I built it because I outworked everybody and nobody was gonna tell me you couldn't do it. And so if I did it once, by God's grace, I was gonna do it again. But the second time it was gonna be done differently because I said, Lord, When I build it back, when I get back on top, I need to show and share the world what they're missing. And I started climbing that ladder. I started building back. I started becoming— here's, here's how obsessed I was, ladies and gentlemen. Here's how obsessed I was. They would tell me what the record goal was for each week, each month, each quarter, each year in insurance sales. And I would blow it out of the water. And I'm not lying. They would give you tickets at each quarter. We'd have a quarterly banquet, and they would give you tickets for how many policies sold, most premium, all these different tickets. And then they'd have this table full, and you would get your ticket, and you'd walk in and pick your prize off, and you'd go back to the line. And you did that until you ran out of tickets. And lo and behold, everybody would be done and I would still have 20 tickets left. Everything on that table was mine. I was obsessed. There was nothing going to shut me down. I was going to build it back, and I was going to show the world that you too can have everything you want out of life. But you can't be interested You can't just say, "I want, I want, I want." You gotta say, "I'm going to get. I'm going to achieve. I'm gonna learn. I'm gonna fight tooth and nail." And then you become obsessed. And you go get it without hesitation, reservations. See, I became obsessed that day. Not for me, but I made a promise. I made a promise. I made a promise to that lady over there. I made a promise to my kids. More importantly, I made a promise to myself that I deserve everything that life has to offer. I'm entitled to it. It says it in the Bible. If it's in the Bible and I believe it, then I am entitled to it. So the only thing that can stop me is me. The only thing that can shut me down is me. And I became obsessed with learning. One of the first things I bought was this book right here. Everybody see this? It's Zig Ziglar Sales Programs. I wanted to get better. I wanted to become the best there ever was to sell snow to Eskimos. Can anybody here in the front tell me what's wrong with this book right here? This is the original copy I bought. Never opened it. How many times have you been to a seminar? Been to a convention, went on YouTube, bought a course, bought a program, and never did anything with it. See, I didn't need more courses. I didn't need more motivation. I needed accountability. That's what went wrong the first time. I knew how to build a business. I know how to make millions of dollars. I didn't have any accountability in growing and scaling that. And when the storms of life came, it was all swept away. See, you're here today, and there's been many people on this stage that says, "I can help you." And if you are willing to accept that help, then trust me, there's not a manual, there's not a program, there's not a motivational speech, there's nothing that's going to fix you. I can promise you that. Until you find somebody, a coach, a mentor, a partner that will hold you accountable to do the disciplines you need to do to achieve what you want to achieve, you will always fail. Do you understand why there's only 1% of the world that has immense success? Anybody tell me? They're obsessed. They're obsessed. And I can promise you this, whether it's a Tom Brady, Patrick Mahomes, Bill Gates, Andrew Carnegie, it doesn't matter who it is, they all had partners, coaches, and mentors that held them accountable. Don't think you're any different. Don't think for one second you can figure it out. I couldn't. And until I got somebody who was smarter, been there, done that, could guide and direct, did I have any success. Now today, in 2015, after I had Saved a ton of money. I started my own company. Real estate was my passion. Lending was my passion. I love that. I love flipping houses. I can see a house and tell you exactly how to flip it and make a profit in seconds. And it's the one thing that I knew. So I got back into it. In 2015, I started a new company called Global— Integrity Finance, GIF. And then I built a team, and then it became GIFT, the gift. And we would always say, the name of the company is Global Integrity Finance. Integrity is our middle name. The foundation of that was so that as I grew, I carried everybody with me. 2015, we founded this company. 2019, we were voted Private Lender of the Year. That's a national award. Guess what? 2020. What happened in 2020? Anybody tell me? COVID. COVID. Hard money lenders are 100% backed by Wall Street. It is a high-risk asset-based deal. And when COVID hit, they all pulled out. Literally, I had just funded $8.7 million in loans and was getting ready to sell those to Wall Street, and I got notification that Wall Street shut down. Ladies and gentlemen, I hit my knees again. I can't do it again because that hurt. And I said, you're kidding me, right? Really, Lord? We just went through 5 years of regrowth, rebuilding. We now feel like we've achieved that success that we lost. We're now empowering. People around us. I have over 7,000 clients at that time, and now you shut me down. Not did you shut it down, I was okay with that, but now we are now $9 million in debt. We have mortgages out there on loans I can't do anything with, and there's no way on God's green earth I'm gonna service these loans for 30 years. It's just not gonna happen. I need that capital. And for 30 or 45 days, I came into the office, I walked into my office, I shut the door, and I pouted again. I pouted. See, I didn't learn my lesson the first time. And so many of us are given those opportunities because we don't have a coach, a mentor, somebody to guide and direct us. We lose our way. And I didn't have one. And so for 30, 45 days, I just came in, I went straight to my office, I closed the door, and I didn't do shit. And one day that lady walked in, she says, hey, are you done? I said, what do you mean, am I done? Just fix it, fix it, and walks out. Really? Really? That's the wife you told me to marry? That's my partner in life, and this is what I get under these tribulate times? Right now she's telling me to fix it? And he said, yeah, fix it. And we did. Within 90 days, once I got my head out of my butt, I realized we had an opportunity because at that moment in time interest rates had dropped on the federal side to zero, meaning we could lend it out at 2%, 3%, which was the all-time low in the history of mortgages. And we still had our license from back in the '90s to do primary residence. And so guess what? We started refinancing primary residence. And boom, boom, boom, boom. And during that time, my attorneys are working on this $9 million in loans. To a note buyer who'd give me a contractual agreement to buy them and reneged, and we were gonna sue him for all he had. And behind the scenes, God was always working. See, here's what we don't understand, we don't realize, or we don't accept. We might not see the fruits of our labor today or the fruits of our prayer today, but God is always working on our behalf. His timing is not our timing. His ways are not our ways. And behind the scenes, he's working on that $9 million issue while I continue to keep the doors open and the families fed. We didn't lay anybody off. We didn't lay not one person off. We bounced right back and we took off. As of today, 31 years in real estate, 13,000 clients, $1.8 billion funded, solely because I am obsessed. See, obsessed people do whatever it takes, whenever it takes, and however long it takes. See, the other thing I learned early in life as a wrestler was if you don't quit, you can't lose. If you don't quit, you can't lose. I'm obsessed with everything I ever set out to do. 12 weeks or 11 weeks ago today, I tore this rotator cuff. They told me it was going to take 6 months to heal. I tore the rotator cuff and the bicep tendon. They said it's gonna take 6 months. I said I'll do it in 6 weeks. I'm obsessed. Whatever you say is the norm, I cut it in thirds because I believe I can outwork, outdo, outperform anybody on any level. Ladies and gentlemen, it's 11 weeks and as of last week, I started lifting weights again and back in the gym. Put in full motion into it, they said I couldn't do until at least the 4th month. But I pushed it. I worked on it every day, all day long, every chance I had. I'm elevating it. I'm elevating it. I'm grabbing something. Didn't matter. I didn't do what just the PT said or the doctor said. I did what my body allowed me to do. See, that's obsessed. And today, I'm back full swing simply because I don't quit. You have the same God gifts. You have the same ability. You have the same talents. See, it says in the Bible, God created man in his likeness. That means we're all the same. We all have God in us. We all have the gifts in us. We all have the power in us to achieve anything you want. The question is, are you What? What? Huh? What's over here? Interested. What's here? Say it loud. One more time. Or? I say it. Where do you stand? Where do you stand? Yeah, I'd like to have it, but it's just, it's not. How many times I hear, well, you know, I need to take care of this first. I gotta take care of that first. I need to get this resolved first. That will always be your excuse. It will always be the reason why. And here's the lie that you don't understand. That's exactly what the devil wants you to say. He's never gonna say, "You don't deserve it. You can't have it." He'll never say that. What he'll say is, "Now's not the time. Now's not the time." And guess what? A week goes by, a month goes by, a year goes by, a decade goes by, a lifetime goes by. See, I'm the guy that when it's time for the good Lord to call me to heaven, I'm gonna be the guy sliding in 92 miles an hour, screaming and hollering all the way to the great side, because I'm obsessed with life. I want it all. What do you want? Where do you want to be? And what do you feel like is owed to you. Because I know you. I've been there. I've been a business owner, and I've had it all, I've lost it all, and I've regained it. And I like where I'm at today simply because I know it's in my DNA. Simply because I know I'm entitled to it. Simply because I know there's no way anybody will ever outperform me. Ladies and gentlemen, my name is Dr. Toby Potter. Thank you so much for your time. Go get 'em, baby, go get 'em! Wow! Give it up for him!
