What is a WHY?
7 Dec 2025 · 3 min
Dr. Gary Sanchez explains why a personal why differs from temporary motivation. Your why is a permanent identity-linked force that guides long-term choices and impact, not the short-term reasons motivational speakers push. He introduces a nine whys framework for finding yours.

Well, hello, I'm Dr. Gary Sanchez, and you're listening to beyond you'd why podcast, where we go beyond just thinking about why or talking about your why to actually discovering and living your why. Because when you know your why, what you do has more impact. It has more meaning, more focus, and more direction. Today's episode is about what is a why. There's so many misconceptions about this, and I want to get us all on the same page today. In our last episode, we talked a little bit about my story and how. I went through looking for my why, searching for my why. I figured out what my why was, and then I was able to help others discover their why. And that's what led me to developing the nine whys, which we're going to get into in another podcast. But for today, what I want to do is set a little bit more of the groundwork for us. I want you all to become experts at this concept of why, of knowing your why, of knowing what the whys are, so that when we bring on guests in the future, you're going to understand their why, their how, their what. You're going to understand their story. You're going to see how it all plays out, and then you're going to see how you can apply this to your life so that you can have an even bigger impact. So the first thing I want to talk about today is what is a why? You see, there's so many motivational gurus out there that are talking about having to know your why. Let me play a couple of a little clip here for you, and you can hear some of these motivational gurus, people that I love, I mean, speakers that I really enjoy listening to, talking about this concept of why. Because what they're talking about is not the same thing that I'm talking about. So let's listen to this and then we'll talk afterwards.
You need a why. Why do you need a why? Because some days you're going to look at that alarm clock. You go look at that alarm clock and it's going to say six. And six is the time you wake up and you're going to look again, it's going to say six or five, and you're going to say, I don't want to get up. But that why is going to say, I push yourself. Get up. Your mama needs you, your daddy needs you, your children need you. Your community get up. Your why is going to push you when you can't push yourself, when you want to quit and give up. Your why is going to give you that edge. You need that advantage, you need that lift that you need to get to the next level. Your why.
So I bet you recognize that voice if you listen to any motivational speakers, you know who Eric Thomas is, and he's always talking about, you gotta know your why. You gotta have a why before you start on that football team or on that football program or that workout program, or you've gotta know your why, right? You hear it all the time. And Tony Robbins as well, you know, he talks about being the why guy. And I think that's awesome, what they're talking about. And it's so important what they're talking about. I don't want to discount that at all. Because what they're talking about is very, very important. What they're talking about is a short term reason for doing something the way you're doing it. And that is super important for hitting your goals, for reaching your goals, for getting where you want to go in the short term. It's awesome to know that. Why. You know, it's funny, when I go to events around the country, somebody will come up and say, so, you know, what do you do? And I'll say, well, I believe that when you know your why, what you do has more impact, right? Has more meaning, has more focus, has more direction. And they'll look at me and they'll start nodding their head and they'll go, yeah, yeah, yeah. You know, I agree with you. In fact, I know my why. And I'll say, great, hey, what is your why? And they'll say, well, you know, I've got two little kids at home and I need to provide for them. So I'm developing my own business so that I can stay at home with my kids. And I say, yeah, you know, that's really good. But that's not really what I'm talking about. What I'm talking about is more like, why would I pick you over everyone else who does what you do? You know, it's funny because no matter what it is you do, there's someone who does the same thing. Whether you do it a little bit differently or you do it a little bit better, there's someone else out there who does what you do. In fact, usually there's a lot of people out there that do what you do. In fact, here in Albuquerque, there's probably over 700 dentists now. So when I, if I were to say, yeah, I'm a dentist, they'll say, oh, that's great. Well, you know, that's, there's 700 other of you here in Albuquerque, and I really don't like teeth and I don't like dentistry and maybe we shouldn't really talk about this. That's kind of what I get sometimes if I were to just say, I'm a dentist. So what I'm talking about is not your short term motivation for doing something that you're doing. What I'm talking about is that permanent driving force that you have within you that goes with you everywhere you go. That's part of who you are, that's brought you success everywhere you've turned. That is the why that I'm talking about. The why that the gurus are talking about is more like a reason. A reason for getting up in the morning, a reason for working out so hard, a reason for doing your job the way you're doing it. And that can change based on the situation. When you've met that goal, that why goes away. You no longer have it. If your why was to fit into a little red dress before you go to this wedding in six months, well, once you fit into that little red dress, your motivation goes away, your reason goes away, your why goes away. And that's not the why that I'm talking about.

What I'm talking about is something that's permanent, been with you forever. It's the driving force that's inside you. It's always there, and it provides lasting clarity and purpose. When you know your why, it's the reason you're here. The why that I'm talking about is more like a natural law, right? A natural law would be something like the law of gravity, right? Whether you know about the law of gravity or you don't, it still affects you, right? If you were standing on top of a sand dune and you were going to jump off the edge of that sand dune and you said to yourself, I don't believe in gravity. I don't know that it's here, I can't see it. I don't believe in gravity. And you jump off that big sand dune, what's going to happen to you? Yeah, you're going to end up at the bottom of the sand dune, right? But if you know about the law of gravity, you can use that to your advantage. You can use it to plan your landing. You can use it to have fun with it on the way down. We can send people to the moon because we know about the law of gravity, right? It still affects you, even though you don't know it's there. Your why is very much the same thing. Whether you know your why or you don't know your why, it still affects everything you do. It governs everything you do. It's that lens with which you view the world and the world views you. So when you know your why, you can use it to your advantage, just like we do with gravity. When you know your why, you can use it to have better relationships, to understand yourself better, to build better businesses. When you know your why. You see, when I didn't know my why, I really felt like I was in the fog. I was doing a lot of things and I was moving forward at a very slow pace. It felt like, you know, imagine going down this mountain road and you drive into this big bank of fog. What happens to your hands on the steering wheel, right? You start to grip it tighter and you slow down, you hit the brakes and you're just crawling along. You can't really see where you're going, and you don't really know where you've been. You can't enjoy the ride because you can't really see where you're going. You're feeling your way along, hoping not to go over the edge. That's what it's like when you don't know your why, you're just doing, and you're just hoping to get through. That's how it felt for me. But once I discovered my why, that's when the fog lifted, and suddenly it was clear. I know why I'm here. I know where I'm going. I know where I've been. I can see the decisions I've made. They make sense to me. My life makes so much more sense to me. I know where I should go, the direction I should go. I can move fast, I can make decisions, and I can enjoy the ride because it's clear. That's what we all want, that clarity as to why we do what we do. It's that driving force that's pushed us forward in everything we do. I never thought I would be on doing a podcast about beyond your why? Are you kidding me? I'm a dentist. I was fixing teeth. I just happened to get on the path of looking and discovering my why, looking for and discovering my why that led me to this. That's the clarity that's now taken me in the direction of where should I really be spending my time? You see, it's the same thing for you. If you don't know your why yet. You're just kind of moving along at a slower pace, feeling your way along. Once you discover your why, in fact, your personal why formula, which is your why, how, and what, that's when you'll have that clarity. That's when you'll be able to move in the direction of your dreams with speed and with confidence and with clarity. That's when it becomes fun. You see, your why is why you do what you do, not just why you do what you do in your job. It's why you do what you do everywhere. It's what you're compulsive about, if you remember. My why is to find a better way and share it. Right? I go to bed thinking about a better way. I wake up thinking about a better way. I didn't choose it. It's just the way it is, and I can't turn it off. I'm compulsive about finding a better way which has its pluses and has its minuses. Your why is your cause. Your why is how you're hardwired. It's that driving force inside you that's pushed you toward every area where you have found success. And it's what people can count on from you. That's the important thing. It's what people can count on from you. And for me, if you're looking for someone, if you're looking for a better way to do something, who should you go to? Right? You should come to me. Because that's how I think. That's what my gift is to the world. Your why is your gift. It's that thing that you bring to the world that makes you special. And that's why it's so important to know that. Because if you don't know it, if it's just a feeling or a sense that it really doesn't have much of an impact for you. When you know it, you'll know it because you'll say you. Yeah, that's exactly why I do what I do. That's exactly what I've done my whole life. That's exactly what people can count on from me. I do that everywhere. Then you will know your why and then it will have that impact for you. That's when it's really important. So if you haven't gone and discovered your why yet, go do that. Go to whyinstitute.com and discover your why, because it's critical for everything we do moving forward. So that's it for today. I really wanted you to get clear on this concept of why so that when you hear people talking about gotta know your why or you hear them talking about the why, you'll know that what we're talking about is that driving force inside you that's brought you success everywhere you've gone. And when you know what it is, then you can use it to your advantage to build the life you want, understand yourself like you never have before, create great relationships and build a business if that's what you want to do. It'll help you in every area of your life when you're clear on your why. So in our next podcast, what we're going to talk about is why. The why. What happens when you know your why, when you communicate based on your why, when you understand your significant others why and important people in your life when you know their why, how that's going to help you. So why is it that you need to know your why and how do you use it? That's what we'll focus on next time. Have a great week. I'll talk to you soon.
