Dr. Greg Eckel Longevity Series Part 4 - The Power of Oxygen

Dr. Greg Eckel explores oxygen's role in longevity, explaining how it reduces inflammation and powers cellular energy. He covers hyperbaric oxygen, ozone therapy, and exercise-with-oxygen to improve circulation and mitochondrial function, and describes how low oxygen contributes to stroke, heart attack, and sleep apnea.

Foreign in a Chinese medicine fashion. The way that I talk about Chinese medicine working is on circulation and blood flow. And why is that important? Because the blood carries the healing properties of the body in it. In particular, we're talking about oxygen here. Oxygen is anti inflammatory. There is a ton of research coming out of the hyperbaric realm of ozone therapies as well, showing the anti inflammatory properties of oxygen. Inflammation in the body is started by whole inflammatory cascade. And oxygen comes and can turn off that switch to turn off the cascade for inflammation. Exercise is one of the best methods to increase your circulation, to take oxygen to all of the cells of your body. Now sometimes that's just not enough or somebody has become disabled enough, where they're not able to do that, whether it be a stroke and stroke rehab, whether it be cardiovascular disease, where they're not able to exercise afterwards. So we have some great oxygen therapies. I started early out in my career in the hyperbaric train. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy, which is going into a chamber of pressure and then you're breathing 95% to 100% pure oxygen. So the idea is you're flooding oxygen into the environment around the body. And then oxygen goes from high concentration to a low concentration. So from the environment into your body, into your cells, into your brain, to help your body heal and also give you more energy. So hyperbaric oxygen is a great one. Ozone therapies is another marvelous way. It's O3, so the one oxygen molecule gets broken off that will scavenge and clear up any bacteria, viruses, molds, free radicals. It clears the blood and then you're left with O2 oxygen as if you were breathing. There are some that are saying just with ozone therapies in and of themselves. I have some colleagues that are running ozone therapy. They don't do any other IV therapy because just flooding the body with the oxygen is enough to give the body's innate intelligence the ability to heal itself. We have exercising with oxygen therapy ewat again. Exercising with a high level of oxygen coming in allows your body and your cells to perfuse, to absorb that oxygen in and give you more energy. Energy is the currency of life. And without energy, so what creates energy in the body? Well, you need oxygen is a vital component to that. It increases energy in our system. It's anti inflammatory, it's healing. All of our cells need oxygen and they all respirate, they all use oxygen in energy production. So if you're not able to breathe, you have congestive pulmonary disease. You're not exercising, you're more on the couch potato front. You're not getting enough oxygen into your body. So we've got to get extra oxygen in. There are some that are saying just with ozone therapies in and of themselves. I have some colleagues that are running ozone therapy. They don't do any other IV therapy because just flooding the body with the oxygen is enough to give the body's innate intelligence, the ability to heal itself. Yeah, the electron transport chain, the ETC is involved in the mitochondria. Mitochondria are the little kidney bean organelle shaped things. If you Remember back to 9th grade science class of every cell of our body, the heart has a ton of mitochondria, the brain a ton of mitochondria. These are energy factories. Oxygen is one of those substrates that goes into the mitochondria to create energy. Well, what else do we need? Well, we also have discovered nad. NAD is a mouthful. Nicotinamide, adenine, dinucleotide. So we won't. It just rolls off the tongue. Right. So that's why we've shortened it to NAD for you. And so NAD is an essential nutrient coming in as a substrate to create more energy of our cells. Without energy in our cells, we die. Like the lights go out without the energy. So that is why this is an important conversation and component in a longevity play. But also just for general health as well. Lack of oxygen in the organism causes all kinds of problems. And you, I mean from fainting and passing out on the most literal sense. But if you have not enough oxygen like in cancer. There are some theories that cancer is caused in a hypoxic environment, meaning low oxygen environment, that the cells all of a sudden stop playing by the rules, which is called apoptosis or apoptosis people will pronounce it, but it is apoptosis which is programmed cell death. So under a hypoxic environment those cells, they kind of, they could become renegade to bring in oxygen to then feed them. So it's like it feeds the. The rebel forces that arise. Other areas of hypoxia is when you look at a stroke, most predominant varieties of strokes are ischemic strokes. There's a clot that goes up and stops the blood flow to your brain. Well then the brain starts to die. That is how essential oxygen is. So hypoxia on the heart, this is where you get occlusion of the heart. You've heard of bypass surgery where they're having to bypass the coronary arteries or vessels on the heart that had been congested. Well, why is that a big deal again? Because blood flow carries oxygen in and all of our cells need the oxygen for energy. So you start talking about cellular death at a microscopic level. But when you get into the heart, that means your heart is dying. Another area that low oxygen comes in into play is around your sleep and sleep disorders. With sleep hypoxia, which causes apnea, sleep apnea, well, that is a major risk for cardiovascular disease. In addition, we have hypoxic events creating an increase of cholesterol metabolism, leading to diabetes as well. Oxygen's role in longevity is often overlooked. But when we look at it in the currency of energy, and when you get to the cellular level of mitochondria, you need oxygen, right? All of our red blood cells are set up for hemes, for irons, to carry oxygen to the cells. That is how important the oxygen economy is. So with a lack of oxygen, you will die sooner. I see it in the clinic where with pathology I can do oxygen therapeutics to really revive and repair and regenerate an individual. Where the actual organs will, they'll regrow, that we will get new cells created by the infusion of oxygen into the body. The mitochondria are the kidney bean shaped organelles of every cell. And they are considered the energy factory, instrumental in signaling the different facets of the system to coordinate itself. The great thing about the whole mitochondria and the energy economy is that we can put in input into the system.
