A short interview-style discussion between Jeffrey Bland, PhD and Dr. Mark Hyman about combining Alaskan wild-caught salmon oil (rich in EPA/DHA and natural astaxanthin) with Hawaiian-cultivated astaxanthin to create a product called 'Fire and Ice'. They describe astaxanthin as an immune-active, cellular-protective phytochemical with antioxidant benefits for vision and aging, and note the resulting red-colored capsule.

One of the questions that I've had recently is Jeff, you know, it seems like you've been doing a lot of trips out there to the Gulf of Alaska, to the Bering Sea and this Dutch harbor plan. And you're also now involved with stuff in Hawaii. And I'm actually sitting here in Hawaii with Dr. Mark Hyman. And is there some kind of a marriage of this concept of nutrition and health between Alaska and Hawaii? And the answer is yes. And I'd like to talk with Mark just briefly about that. It actually relates to a product that we have in the big old healthline called Fire and Ice. A number of years ago I got introduced to a person who is manufacturing and producing through natural processes a very important phytochemical which I know you know a lot about astaxanthin. And astaxanthin is a cellular protective agent. It's an immune active phytochemical that's found in specific species of algae that can growing in Hawaii. And so I said I wonder if we could compound that immune strengthening effects together with our barium C dho Dutch Harbor Omega. And that led into this Fire and Ice product. The reason I really like the Fire and ice, when it, when it came out it nice and red, it produces a beautiful red colored capsule. That's the mixture of this pigment from Hawaii, this astaxanthin, along with the EPI DHA from Alaska. So this is something that, where we've married the two phytochemicals together into a single product. Have you had any experience, Mark, at all with that astaxanthin as a phytochemical?
Well, for sure. I mean it's well studied around the impact on vision and aging and eyes and powerful antioxidants. Is why we eat for example, salmon because it has this red phytochemicals or orange phytochemicals that are from the algae. And that's really hard. Fine, it's hard to get. So the fact that you've been able to grow it in Kona and that you've been able to actually put it in this product is pretty amazing.
Well, I think you said something really important and that is the oil that we're using in this particular product is wild caught salmon oil that has some natural astaxanthin from the salmon coupled with the Hawaiian astaxanthin that gives us this more rich and I think higher concentration astaxanthin.
