It is an honor to be able to address the Institute for Functional Medicine on the occasion of its 20th anniversary. It is a privilege to have this opportunity to congratulate Dr. Jeffrey Bland, this year's recipient of the Linus Paulin Functional Medicine Lifetime Achievement Award. I had the great good fortune to receive this honor exactly 20 years ago. When I was just a young man. 72. As the self proclaimed, and I might add, undisputed luckiest man. I think I know another very lucky man when I see him. Jeffrey Flint is such a man. In a world almost drowning in information, he was quick to realize that not all information is born equal. Because he is brilliant, he was able to evaluate what was valuable, indeed, what was essential. He could have left his fellows behind. Instead, he translated what he learned. So that others who were not so brilliant could access and use this information as well. The result. Everyone wins. Why is Jeffrey so lucky? Because he gets up every day of his life and does exactly and precisely what he wants to do. Isn't it great for us that what makes Jeffrey Bland happy is saving the world? Sometimes that world kicks and screams and behaves very badly indeed. And it makes us all wonder why we are trying to save it. May I remind you, Jeffrey, of what Mahatma Gandhi said? First they ignore you. Then they laugh at you. Then they fight you. Then you win. You and your team at the Institute for Functional Medicine are winning. Keep fighting. The world needs you.
