A short conversation (YouTube video) exploring the link between aging and the immune system, arguing that chronic inflammation — termed “inflammaging” — drives many age-related diseases. The speakers emphasize that lifestyle changes, particularly whole-food diets and specific ‘superfoods’ (e.g., Himalayan, Tartary buckwheat), plus exercise, stress reduction, and sleep, can modulate immune aging and reduce inflammation.
People have asked, how is aging associated with our immune system? Why do we age as a consequence of alterations in our immune system?
Well, you know, the single characteristic that kind of links together almost all age related diseases is inflammation. And in fact, aging has been called inflammaging. And, and what we often see as normal aging is not really normal. It's abnormal. Aging is caused by excess inflammation that we actually can impact through our lifestyle and through some powerful changes in our diet. And that includes a number of these compounds or superfoods that regulate our immune system. So we have an opportunity to really shift our immune aging and just all the age related diseases dramatically by changing the way we eat, by eating whole foods, by including the number of superfoods, things like Himalayan, Tartary, buckwheat, which we talked about, and by adjusting the lifestyle factors that drive inflammation, lack of exercise, stress, lack of sleep, all of which drive inflammation. But our diet is probably the number one thing. And so if you really want to live a long, healthy life, the key is to understand your immune system, to understand how that ages and how to reverse that.
