Immunity + Big Bold Health

Jeffrey Bland explains how the immune system shapes your physical, metabolic, cognitive, and behavioral health. He introduces immune rejuvenation: replacing damaged immune cells with new ones to restore resilience. Rather than generic immune boosting, he proposes personalizing interventions by first defining your immuno identity.

Big bold health plus your immune system. It's the marriage made in heaven. Why? Because the whole focus we have in big bold health is trying to understand how these two fit together to create your desired health. What is the entry point into being healthy? What we have found is the word health really can vary in its interpretation and definition from person to person. What one person might feel is the objective for health, another person might think is another important objective entirely. One, it might be running a marathon. Another, it might be going to their child's graduation. I mean, there could be a lot of ways that we define health, but no matter the definition, in order to empower those activities, you have to have a healthy immune system. Because your immune system is the entry point for which your body translates information from the outside world into how you're fun function. Your physical function, your metabolic function, your cognitive function, and your behavioral function are going to be kind of trained. So we think immune system understanding is a core concept in really both designing, implementing, executing, and realizing positive health outcome that's based upon your individual desire of what is health for you. Now, with that said, how would we then look at the immune system? We look at the immune system as this extraordinarily complex, well, adaptive system that can be trained to be your friend, not to be your foe. People often talk about, well, what about autoimmune disease, where the immune system is turned against us and it's thinking of our bodies as a foreigner and it's doing bad things. What I'm saying is that the immune system actually is readily able to be trained. It's constantly regenerating itself. We call that immune rejuvenation. And it does so by taking out some of the cells that have had bad experiences and are trained in a way to be feeling at risk and replacing them with new, healthy, unprimed cells that are ready for new experiences. That turnover of our immune system and regeneration of our immune system happens. But if the rate of production of our new, friendly, highly active immune cells is less than the number of cells that have had bad experiences, have been undergoing bad training, now we have an immune system we call immunosenescent. An aged immune system that's associated with two things. Number one is it's less able to fight against foreigners, but paradoxically, it is more on guard, and it's producing this chronic inflammation that we call inflammaging associated with poor health outcomes. And it's this entree point of how we then would want to start personalizing intervention to that individual's own immune system need knowing that there are different immune types. We call them immuno identities. So by defining the immuno identity of the individual, we can then design specific programs to help to train that person's immune system to be not that of the system that is at war with itself, but collecting bad memories and bad experiences, but rather ready to take on the opportunity to do the best it can with future opportunities for resilience and resistance. So building resilience, building resistance is entitled and incorporated within immune rejuvenation. And that is a process which we're now just seeing at the scientific level become of age. Moving away from immune boosting to to immune rejuvenation through the replacement of these damaged cells that are either epigenetically damaged or mutationally damaged. Let's just call it those that have had bad experiences and replace them with new, more vital cells that will do the better job for defending and protecting both against infection and against the metabolic and toxic insults we get from things like toxic chemicals and bad experiences and diets that are not optimal. Our immune system is there to do the job when it's given the full opportunity. That is big bowl health. That is the approach that we have in the immune system. And that is where we're going to go with a series of exercises, training programs and intervention programs that will specifically tailor to the individual immuno identity that you possess. That's big bold health. Stay with us.
