Dr. Jeffrey Bland supports MAHA's focus on how food production affects health, but warns against unsupported nutrition claims like dismissing dietary fat or assuming more protein always helps. He cites epidemiological research and argues for a systems approach that tracks food from fields through animals to humans.

Hi, I'm Dr. Jeffrey Bland, and I'd like to talk a little bit more about this Make America Healthy movement. You know, there's some really great things that are happening, opening up the dialogue about food and how it influences our health, how it's produced, and how it ultimately is processed and delivered to individuals. These are all positive things that I think we're all really celebrating because we need to reevaluate how food is influencing our health. On the other side, however, there's some concerns. The concerns are really related to some of the things that are really not so science-grounded in the good nutritional science of today. Things like, uh, it doesn't matter how much fat you consume or what type of fat it is, or things like protein is great, just keep building more and more protein. You know, there are adverse effects of both of those on human health. Good studies across multiple countries, individual case-control studies, epidemiological work showing that those really don't match up with long health and good, good life. Therefore, if we're really talking about the puts and the takes, I think we need to remind ourselves that the science of nutrition is still grounded. It still needs to be looked at. This article by Neal Barnard in the Journal of the American Medical Association talks about the fact that we need to go back to what is scientifically demonstrated to be proven from good studies. And we need to look at survivability of the system based upon the fields in which the things are grown, the animals that consume it, and the people that consume the animals. How does that all fit together in a system of health? That to me is where we'll see a really major breakthrough in the outcome that MAHA could bring to our society.
