Tips for long term oral health. My special guest today is Dr. Virginia Diego. She has been practicing holistic dentistry for several years at Beverly Hills Dental Health and Wellness. Tell us a little bit about you, Dr. Diego. Welcome to the show.
Thank you so much, doctor. Pleasure to be here and congratulations on your podcast.
Thank you. It's about time, right, that we have a de holistic dentistry show.
I know that's true. And it's much easier for patients if they want to find more about holistic or where to go to or anything about dental treatment.
Yeah. So please send us a comment on social media. Leave us a message. What would you like to listen to? Today we're going to focus on prevention and really how you became a holistic dentist. Like, but how did you become a dentist altogether?
It goes way back when I was a teenager. I was 16 years old and going through races. I was very interested in dentistry. No one in my family is a dentist. I'm the first one in the generation. And I happened to bump into a mentor and she guided me to become a dentist. And then in the long run, I met you too.
Yeah.
So you're pretty much my teacher. You're. You taught me a lot about holistic. And I'm really glad I was able to have someone to guide me because I've seen such an improvement with our dental treatment. A holistic approach, of course, and how they have improved their oral health thanks to that.
Thank you. It's my pleasure. And thank you for allowing me to make a difference in your career. So tell me what kind of things you were doing as a traditional dentist because you practiced a little bit as traditional dentistry. Were you removing mercury fillings? Were you placing mercury fillings?
Placing and removing mercury feelings? And wasn't that until I met you where you were giving me all those tips about how inhaling some of that mercury could actually bring toxins to myself, to the environment and to the assistance when you told me that and the side effects of that, say, wait a minute here. I have an autoimmune disease now that I unfortunately develop very at A very young age. And I'm thinking like, could it be something that could be correlated? Maybe now I was. I have those toxins in me.
Yeah.
And so now since I was. Since you guided me how to remove that safely, I've actually have detox a bit of it. But yeah. Yeah.
Because you are now I aomt smart. Certified.
Yes.
Right? Yes. Tell us a little bit about what that means.
It means that you get certified in how removing amalgam fillings the safe way. So like that the patients won't inhale some of that. And also we use products that you've developed supplements to help them chelate out of their body.
Yeah. Very important to prevent toxicity.
Yeah. So it has made a difference in our patients because they feel much better after removing the mercury fillings and they felt that they're autoimmune disease like myself. Symptoms have gone a little better and.
Yeah. Once you started learning holistic, what other things have you seen that made a difference besides the mercury? We're talking about prevention today, so I'm curious to see if you notice the difference.
I was telling you about using this probiotics, which I really like. I take them because I have dry mouths. So when using this, it helps break the plaque buildup, but at the same time it helps with my dry mouth. And I feel like it's helped a lot of our patients as well, especially when they're high risk cavities patients when it comes to breaking down plaque.
Yeah, absolutely. And for those of you that are not familiar with chewable probiotics, the research on chewable probiotics has been really exploding, mostly because we were studying it in conjunction with reducing cavities.
Yeah.
But also, as you said, plaque reduction has been big, especially for those people that are actually building a lot of plaque. When you have a dry mouth, you build more plaque.
So when patients that have dry mouth, either because like myself that I have Sjogren's syndrome or they have they're taking medication, what happens is, especially carbs, they just stick to your teeth, they stick to your palate. And sometimes you don't have access to that toothbrush. Right. And I always tell patient a good tip that I give them about this probiotics is carry it with you in a purse. And what I do, I just, if I don't have access to that, I go to the restroom, I rinse a little bit with water and then I take a probiotic and then I swirl it around, especially in the areas that I know I have feel that plaque buildup. And what it does. It breaks it down and it improves the moisture in my mouth. So I think that's where the xylitol kicks in. Yeah.
Because it helps you salivate. So it actually motivates your salivary glands to put out more saliva.
It's really good. I definitely recommend this product. I always recommend this product to all my patients. Patients, whether they have dry mouth or not.
Yeah, yeah.
It's actually really good and very effective. So. Yeah.
You know what I like about it? Especially for. To prevent that coating on your tongue.
When people wake up in the morning.
You have sometimes that white coat, bad breath. And actually, what's interesting, I had a patient recently that was telling me about a cpap. Since I started using a cpap, I started to feel, like, sensitivity around my lips. Like the inner portion. Yes. And the tongue when I wake up in the morning. I gave her the chewable probiotics. She said she can feel the difference after just one use, right?
Yeah, definitely. I mean, like I said, and for kids, too, is really good. Not just for adults, but for kids, too. The parents have always asked, we've heard of gut probiotics. We never heard of oral probiotics. What's the difference? It's going to help reduce that bacterial level in the mouth and for kids, since kids are very prone developing cavities. Cabbages are more aggressive in children. So I told them this would actually work and they're going to like it because it has a good taste. We have that berry flavor. I don't know if you still have berry flavor. That's my.
Yes. Oh, you like berry.
Okay, great. You have the mint flavor, so. But the berry flavor is really good. And I think kids are liking that mostly. Is the berry flavor.
Very true. Yeah.
They have nothing. The taste is actually pretty good. It's not sweet, it's not minty. I don't want to say it has a little touch of caramel taste to it, but that's just. That's my interpretation.
I like it.
Yeah. Probiotics has been one of. One of the products that we have implemented in our treatments. All these supplements that we use in our patients, they seem to work a lot on patients. So they come back and they're like, I need some of that stuff. I need some of that probiotics because it really helps. I feel the difference.
Yeah. What else have you seen in terms of coming into our holistic dental practice, in terms of people maintaining the health of the gums? Have you noticed a difference with the. In terms of our preventative methods?
Oh, My God. I think if anything. Yes, that comes. So I come from a traditional practice, Right. And when I started with you and you introduced me to ozone, I think that was just like an explosion. I was like, what is this ozone? I never heard of it. When you started guiding me on when to use it, how to use it, the benefits, how patients will benefit, the beginning, I was like, oh, great, give it a try.
Yeah.
So I've noticed here in Encino office, we have the traditional patients, and now they're in a holistic office. I've noticed that their gum recession has improved. The gum swelling has improved as well when using the ozone. Now, patients will ask, when I tell them about ozone, they look at me and they're kind of skeptical. So it's very important to guide our patients and tell them what holistic dentistry is first. Right. What does it consist of and so forth. Education is very important for patients. And when I go ahead and do the process, I tell them, I guide them on the steps and I tell them how the benefits are going to be in this case. Let's just talk about the gums. I go, after I do your perimeatetenance, let me go ahead and disinfect the mouth with ozone, because that's what it does. It disinfects and detoxifies.
Yes.
So they're like, really? How does that work? Until it kills the bacteria that it's underneath the gum line that I cannot reach, let's say with my instruments or with the airflow. And yet we're preventing for your gum disease to progress, but also periodontal treatment procedures. And so when I do that, they're very thankful and they notice, you know what I do notice? That my gums are much better. They're lighter in color. They always say that. I guess they're saying it's not inflamed, it's not red. Right. They're lighter in color and they're less sensitive. So it works on teeth that are very sensitive, gums that are swollen. And for our perio patients that have periodontal disease, they've noticed that even the recession has not gotten worse. Yes, it's been stable. So we've been able to stable a lot of these gum diseases with ozone, just ozone itself. So amazing. We use ozone for restorative work before even sealing a ceramic filling or even when we crown teeth. We always use ozone to disinfect all that area, making sure we don't leave anything inside. Right?
Yeah, absolutely. I agree with you. I think the number one preventative measure that we can do as holistic dentists is administer ozone for patients under the crowns around the gums because it really helps to decrease the burden of bacteria. Help the body healing.
Exactly. Yeah. For sure. And patients have noticed that great difference. So I think that's why education comes in very handy.
Yeah.
Educator, public out there bringing awareness about how ozone can benefit.
For sure. Definitely. And I think even as a periodontist, I treat gum disease, But I think since I've become biological periodontist, I have not really done periodontal traditional surgery because it's not really needed. When we're able to do things non surgically, it's always better for the patient. And when we use ozone and lasers to prevent and treat disease, that I don't have to do surgery.
Patients don't want surgeries. Yeah. They don't want pain, they don't want invasive procedures. That's the first thing that comes into mind. I don't want anything invasive. I want conservative. Be it effective.
Yes, absolutely. Exactly. And here in the practice, do we use ozone in different forms? Do we use a water and gas?
So in practice we use ozonated water. We fabricate our own ozonated. We have a generator that makes ozonated water. We definitely use fresh ozone water for our patients. So when you come here, you're going to be sure that we don't use any filtered or from the city water. We don't. That's not what we do. We make our own ozonated water. So during our cleanings, during our fillings, our crown preppings, everything, we use fresh ozonated water for sure. Yeah. And ozone gas also as well, the gums and restorations. And so yes, in those two forms, we use it in water and gas. We also have an oil. I love my ozone. Yes.
I like to take a little bit of ozonated oil, put it in water and let's say if you get a sore throat, I gargle with it. Yeah, Sometimes, Especially when I was traveling during COVID times, I used to put a little bit just at the base of my nose.
Also with skin, the oil, if you rub it like on top of a pimple or it actually helps it heal.
It's amazing. Yeah. Because it's all bacteria. Right. And a pimple.
Yeah.
Makes sense. Yeah.
So I was like, wow, this thing actually does it favors in so many areas. Not just in dentistry, but you know, in other areas too as well. In regards to all your health.
Yes. I always like to say that ozone is for me, Windex was In the big factory.
So you're right. The solution to everything.
That's right. What about preventing cavities? So we talked about using the triple probiotics, but we also use some nano calcium treatment. So I want to talk a little bit about. Obviously we don't recommend fluoride in our practice because really the studies are exactly there.
They're scary.
Yeah.
How fluoride affects like IQ of a child or it's like, how is this still out there? And the amount too, like it's found in city water, in products, food products, like how can we even escape fluoride? And unfortunately, now let's say you want to add in your toothpaste and you want to use it. It's like horrible because there's a lot of this side effects of fluoride. And as dentists we are trained that fluoride actually strengthens your teeth.
Right, right.
What happened to fluorosis? Right. That's fluorosis, isn't it?
Yeah.
It's an irony.
It's an irony that for those of you that don't know what fluorosis is, the over ingestion of fluoride that causes your teeth to be weakened by fluoride.
By the way, and it just doesn't weaken your teeth. It will weaken your bones to us and make them brittle, weak, and then you can easily fracture your lung. But anyways, I was like very concerned about that and I said, what are the other options out there? Right, yes.
To prevent cavities. Absolutely.
And prevent. To strengthen the enamel. So what we use in the office, there are two products. So one of them is mipased. And mipased what it does, it definitely strengthens the enamel, but we also use it to arrest incipient cavities. So when you come in for your checkup and we notice that there is a beginning stage of cavities, we're not the type of dentists that are going to go there and drill, drill, drill and put a filling on it. What we do is preventative work first. One of them, the first step we do is, is first see how deep, how big is that cavity. Once we know that it's not deep enough into the second layer, which dentin, then that's the stage where we can still arrest the cavity. And we do that by using either MI paste or we have this product, the probiotic mineralizing tooth powder. And what it is, it also strengthens your teeth as opposed to the MI paste and the powder, the MI paste. Now I'm not sure we can use this in trace. Do you think we can use this in trace?
I think so. And that's one of the things. The newer product in the Orzana line, it's a product that actually just disclosure here. I formulated the calcium hydroxyapatite, which is actually present in both the MI paste and this product. And so it's really the active ingredient.
I think that we.
If we take this and make like a slurry, just mix it with water and then put it on, brush it on the teeth, and just snap on the tray. Oh, I think that should be fine. Yeah, absolutely.
Because even with the mips, we ask them either to brush and then leave it there for 10 minutes. Now you can do that. We can develop trace for you. And what you do, you could put the MIPS inside the tray, and then you place it in the mouth, and you could leave it there for 10 minutes. Or you could actually sleep with it. Right. And leave it there all night and let it do, you know, its job of penetrating inside your pores and then like that, it absorbs calcium. And that's how you strengthen your teeth, and that's how you arrest also cavities. Yeah, so, yeah, absolutely. Great.
Yeah. What I like about that treatment that you just mentioned is that it's good also for people that have sensitive teeth, because sensitivity is, to me, it's a sign of weakness enamel. So we can do it. If you have sensitive teeth, in order to build back some of your enamel, you can use calcium hydroxyapatite products, this being one of them. But fluoride is not something that we recommend.
Yes, definitely. What I like about this is the flavor. It's actually an orangey flavor. It's actually pretty good. Really good.
It's not too light at all.
It's just a perfect, light touch of orange flavor. Yeah.
And in all honesty, you can brush it on and you don't have to rinse it off because it is food grade. So if you don't want to rinse it off, you don't have to go to bed like a. Yeah, just spit out the excess. Let's go back here to mercury fillings a little bit and talk about preventing toxicity, because I think that's such an important thing. Number one, how do you know that we have to remove it?
Right. That's a very good question. When I see a patient and they have amalgam fillings, I like to first take pictures of the amalgam fillings, because I feel like patients are. Feel like, hey, I have no symptoms on this tooth that has an Amalon filling. I'm doing fine. I don't want to touch it. But the problem is that some of these amalgam fillings are not going to give you symptoms. Right. You need to visually see it. And that's what we use detection and X rays to determine if an amalgam filling needs to be removed. Right.
Yeah.
So most amalgam fillings, and I know, I would say 90% of old amalgam fillings, if you have an amalgam filling that you've had it since you were a kid, most likely that metal is already corroding. So I take a picture and I've noticed a pattern. They have that black, nasty staining around the Malvern filling. But patients don't know that. Obviously they can't see that in their mouth, Right?
Yes.
And then around the black corrosion is minor cracks. So when you see that the mellow filling is not sealing the tooth anymore, there's micro leakage there. And that's problematic because now you have that risk of having bacteria underneath alumalum filling. And if you have bacteria buildup, consequently, you're going to have cavities.
And how often do you remove these mercury fillings and cavities underneath them?
I would say maybe 50% of them.
Yeah.
And then I've noticed that also there's cracks underneath that. So amalgam fillings, as they age, they tend to expand and they. They cause these fractures around the teeth. That's very common, too. Yeah. So unfortunately, sometimes if we let these. The longer we let these amalam fillings in the mouths, the more they're causing. They're causing a bigger issue. So that's why it's very important to get a checkup and find out what's going on in the mouth, not just with the myelofilies, but with your gums and so forth, because they're all. They all work together. I was reading an article where it says is not just affecting the teeth of myelom fillings. I mean, it's affecting your whole body. You're. Imagine you're swallowing this corrosion.
Yeah.
And you're infecting other vital organs. And that's why patients get these secondary symptoms that they can't quite understand where they're coming from. Like tiredness.
Yeah. Brain fog.
And so that's very important to educate the patient on that.
And what's interesting, mercury toxicity has been associated with candida or yeast overgrowth.
Yes.
And for those of you that might not know what is an amalgam filling, an amalgam filling is A silver filling. So if you open up your mouth and you look in the mirror and you see this huge silver filling in your mouth is most likely an AMALGAM FILLING that's 50% mercury.
Mercury, yes.
Yeah. And you're right about corrosion. And if it's corroded, that means mercury is being released.
Oh, exactly. I know that. First of all, when we see patients that come in and they're very concerned about the mercury level as well, we do the testing here in the clinic. We test to see what are your mercury levels and if it's even safe to go in there and remove your mercury fillings. We need to know first, how are we going to lower those levels of mercury? Correct.
Yes.
And so I know with your supplements, we help patients with that to chelate the metal.
Yeah, definitely. I don't. I like the mercury tritus that we use here from Quicksilver. There's also, like, a urine challenge test where you can actually pull all the mercury from the fatty tissue and do it that way. But any way you choose to do it, I think it's definitely beneficial if you've had any mercury fillings, and even if you haven't, if your mother had them, guess what? It passed them on to you because that's what happens. Mercury goes from the mother to the baby.
Yes. I've seen that there's mercury in breast milk. When I read that, I was like, wait a minute. And this is just too much.
Right.
Then that means that if you're. If you're planning to have kids or. I know that it could interrupt with the fertility as well. It's correlated with that. But also, I mean, if you have plans of becoming a mother, then it would be great to do analysis first to see your level of mercury and how as dentists, we can help you reduce the mercury level by either removing your Maldon fillings first before going into that route.
Yeah, absolutely. And testing is important. We do a lot of testing here for different things and knowing your mercury levels. Also important.
Also, I want to maybe talk about.
Our airflow technology in terms of the way we maintain teeth and prevent problems long term.
Yes. When it comes to controlling gum disease in the mouth. You know, we don't do cleanings here.
Like the scraping style. Yeah.
I hate using the word cleaning, to be honest.
Yeah.
Leaving the house or. Right.
You're not leaving a rugged. No, no, I'm gonna do that here. Yes.
We like to give patients gum therapy where we're not being aggressive to the tissue. So the surface of the tooth, like Traditional way where we have to scrape and cause more harm on the surface of the tooth and removing some of that healthy layer we do need on our teeth. So the way we go about that is we use the airflow. And with the airflow I could polish your tooth, remove plaque buildup, I mean, remove stains in a safe manner and in a safe matter. And at the same time, we're helping the patient improve their oral health with that. So what I notice also is as I'm removing the plaque buildup, I'm depositing an anti inflammatory powder on it. So it's a device, it's actually a really neat device where I'm doing all of that, but at the same time depositing that anti inflammatory powder underneath the gums on the surface of the tooth. And what I do, we clean out the inside of the cheek as well. Very important because bacteria is all over the mouth. We cleaned it for the mouth and then the tongue, obviously, and then the ozone. But it's a very neat tool where I feel like it's very effective in removing the plaque buildup for sure. Even tar. And with healthies you have to be a little bit more with the cavitron. But I mean, that's expected sometimes because, you know, target build a bit of calculus. It's pretty strong. They stick to your teeth and you can't even remove that with your toothbrush. But anyways, but with the airflow, I can definitely remove most of it out.
Yeah. And why is it important on a regular basis?
Yeah, it's important because that's what's causing the inflammation in the mouth. Anytime we see bleeding inflammation on the mouth and the gums, that that means you're developing a disease, a gum disease, either gingivitis or you have periodontitis. So what happens is when I help remove the bacteria, we're reducing the bacteria level in the mouth and therefore the inflammation comes down as well. And we're controlling either the periodontal disease or we're helping eliminate the gingivitis and having more of a, I would say a healthy level. So we're doing all of that. I mean, it brings a lot of benefits to the patient and controls the bad breath. There's no more bad breath. And then the patient feels going in there and not being too aggressive. They like that. They're like, I hate it when I go to traditional dentist and they use that very noisy cavitron and I feel like they're scratching my teeth and eliminating unnecessary layers or they're damaging my crowns because they feel like they're scratching too much on my crown. And it's totally different the way we do it here.
Yeah, absolutely. And with that I want to say that I had a. Recently a patient that came to us, he had hourglass teeth, the lower teeth. He was going in every three months for a cleaning and the hygienist was so aggressive, turned his teeth into hourglass teeth. Basically she scraped the sides of these teeth.
Yeah.
Until basically two of them died and I had to remove them.
Right. Because it thins out structure.
So not all cleanings are created equal. If your gums hurt after you've had a cleaning, that's not a good sign. That's too much.
Yes.
And I'm not talking about a deep cleaning, that's another story. I'm just talking a regular preventative maintenance. And I like what you said, that a cleaning is not a cleaning. It's really a therapy. It is, and in this case is an anti inflammatory therapy, is a biofilm therapy. Because it's really going to help to maintain healthy gums so that you know, your gums don't bleed. Because what happens every time the gums bleed, Bacteria has an opportunity to enter your system from the mouth.
Yes, definitely.
So I think with the treatment that we're offering for preventative oral health, we're also preventing other diseases such as brain fog. I want to go as far as saying heart disease because a lot of oral bacteria is connected to heart disease.
Right.
So you're right, it is not a clinic. Yes. Beyond that. And I think it's good that we're talking about this because it's an important point. Right.
Patients are not aware that gum disease is related to gum disease and heart disease go hand in hand. Or now we have this alert where they're saying it's correlated to dementia and Alzheimer's and patients just. Are you kidding me? No, seriously, if we don't control this disease, then what happens? It's going to go into your bloodstream and imagine that same destruction that it's doing in your mouth. And you look at your gums and they're swollen, they're bleeding. Imagine the destruction that they're doing internally. It's the same thing. They're destroying tissue and they're destroying tissue inside our body. What's going on and.
Exactly.
They're bacteria. They're going to do anything to survive. That's right.
And hide. Any other words of wisdom for prevention in general? What can people do at home, let's say for prevention? You mentioned the probiotic, you mentioned some of the calcium hydroxyapatite.
Yes. There's patients that are honest with me, like, you know what? I don't floss. I'm going to be honest. I don't floss. I hate dealing with strings. I don't have the time. I'm sorry, I'm too busy.
I mean, those are the honest ones. Some of them floss. Yeah, I floss, but then you can tell they don't.
Exactly.
But they're honest.
They're like, he dealing with strings. I hate. I don't have the time. So I tell them, you know what? Why don't you use a water jet? The water jet, what it does, it eliminates also the plaque buildup not just in between your teeth, but underneath the gum line. And so when I guide them, and we guide our patients here how to use it, because I think that's very important, knowing how to use the water jet, it's not just putting it in between your teeth and it goes a little bit beyond that. But that's over here to guide you how to use it correctly, because that's how you're going to get the best outcome, using that tool. And so we do this here with our patients. But our patients that, you know, never used a water jet, they became fans. They're like, I have to use my water jet because then I don't really feel like my teeth are clean. Like, I have to use it now because of that. And I do notice a difference. And some patients still floss. That's fine. They floss and they use the water jet. They use both of them. But they definitely notice a great improvement in their oral health using the water jet. That's for sure.
Yeah. A lot of the studies on the water jet actually were done that have shown to decrease inflammation and more importantly, decrease inflammation around dental implants and crowns. Yes. As you know, I still feel. Because the implant's round and there's water.
That really gets underneath the ends, controls the inflammation.
So.
Yeah, I mean, your toothbrush can't do that. I mean, the princess of the toothbrush. I mean, it's hard. And also just the floss itself, because no one really teaches us how to floss, Right?
Yes.
We're just giving ourselves the idea, I'll just go in there and just do this movement and that's it.
But that's if you're lucky, most people go in and out, there's no movement.
And they end up cutting their gums.
That's right.
Causing inflammation on the gums. And so what happens? They get discouraged yeah, I'm not going to floss because every time I floss I bleed and have bad breath because of the blood in the mouth. So it's like, forget it, I'm not going to do it with the water. Gen is much easier and it's painless. It's, it's great. It's a great tool. Yeah, very effective tool.
So that's a good tip for sure. So here you have it. Prevention in the dental office. How to get a cleaning that's preventative and therapeutic. How to prevent teeth cracking by removing your mercury fillings on time. Let's end with a quick tip for today. So I think for me the quick tip that you gave or it was a little bit longer, but I'm going to shorten it is if you have dry mouth, try a chewable probiotic from orasana.com. yes, yes. Because it's going to help to stimulate saliva and decrease cavities and plaque.
Thank you very much for being with.
Us today and sharing your wisdom.
Thank you for inviting me over and congratulations again on your. And I hope you know this is going to help a lot of your fans and your, our patients and come visit us in Encino. We can help you answer any of your questions you're interested in a consultation. If you're curious about anything, ozone, how to remove mercury fillings, by all means you can come stop by and visit us.
Absolutely. Okay, see you all next time. Growing up, I always had sensitive teeth. And whenever I would drink cold water or ice water, I would really feel and I would kind of shy away for any kind of cold drinks. So I started using this nano calcium toothpaste but it was kind of chalky and it wasn't tasting good at all. So I really started to look at, okay, how can we improve this toothpaste? And I developed the Orasana probiotic toothpower. And not only I was able to find a nano calcium that actually penetrates the teeth to make them stronger and less sensitive, but I also added the probiotics. And probiotics are so beneficial. We have lots of studies to show that they're good for anti cavities and they're great at controlling inflammation. So when I designed the Orasana probiotic tooth powder, I really wanted to have this super toothpaste because I wanted to get as many benefits as I could out of the one product and that's the Orasana probiotic tooth powder. I highly, highly suggest you try it and let me know how your teeth feel. Thank you so much for joining me this week, Please make sure you check out the show notes for any links mentioned in the show.
