If your business isn't working the way you expected, it's not because you're bad at business. It's because no one ever taught you how it actually works. We were trained to master algorithms in medicine, but when it comes to revenue teams and growth, we were never taught anything. We weren't even told to figure it out. We just assumed somehow we'd know. Like it would magically make sense. But it doesn't. The era of the seven Figure Physician CEO is here. And it's not about working harder. It's about learning entrepreneurship as a system. The same way you mastered ACLs and pals, you can master the algorithm of building a profitable scalable business. That's why I recorded the Seven Figure Physician CEO audiobook. Whether you're building a medical or non medical business, and whether your goal is your first million, first 2 million, first 5 million, first 10 million, this is where the journey starts. There is no Calvary coming to save us. We are the Calvary.
So.
So go get your audiobook now. Www.entremd.com 7Figurebook. And let's rewrite the narrative for physicians starting today. Hi, docs. Welcome to the Entre MD Podcast, where it's all about helping amazing physicians just like you, embrace entrepreneurship so you can have the freedom to live life and practice medicine on your terms.
I'm your host, Dr. Umna. All right, everybody, welcome back to another amazing episode of the Entre MD podcast. And I have one of the most spectacular treats for you today. Okay, so the background of this is I am in a mastermind, and I'm here with our special guest today, and I saw this thing of how to, you know, build a team with little or no money.
I'm like, what?
Because anybody who's an entrepreneur knows, like, I need to start delegate. I need to start getting things off my plate, but, like, I don't have the budget for that, right? And I was like, what? And then I go look at her presentation and all this stuff, totally blown away. Okay. And I don't think. I mean, we kind of had chatted on messenger here and there, but it's like, you, can you, can you, can you come do this for my business school people? Please, like, can you come? And, you know, she's so gracious. She's gonna come do a full workshop for us, but then she's gonna come give you nuggets here that you can run with on the podcast. So I'm so excited to have her. So, Becky Davis, welcome to the show.
Thank you so much. I am so glad to be here. Listen, I know this having people and a team as an entrepreneur can drive us crazy.
Yep. But we need it. We need it. Yes, we need it. Yeah. So like I was saying before we got on, you know, I told her, I was like, you're going to have to introduce yourself because your bio is just too good. So can you just give the listeners a sneak peek of, you know, who you are and what you do?
Yes. Becky A. Davis. I'm also known as the chief bosspreneur. My company is called MVP Work, which is a coaching and consulting practice. Foundation of our business is leadership development, executive coaching, and team building and training. Coming out of Corporate America After 20 years, I worked in retail managed. So I managed teams. And when I left the last company I was with, I was running the southeast territory, managing 150 million in retail sales with 12 regional directors. And I realized that building teams was something that I had become really good at. And then when I became an entrepreneur, that was a whole nother story. There I have been for five years, the Coca Cola company's national spokesperson for their small business initiative, which allows me to go all over the US Speaking and presenting training and workshops to entrepreneurs to help them grow, build and scale their business. I am a certified business owner, woman owned and minority owned business, and I help businesses to create, generate more revenue, starting with the team, starting with people.
Okay, so you guys can see why I was not going to introduce her because I was like, I can't do all that. Right. But, but, and you can see the kind of treat that I have for you. Okay, all right, so now you have a very, you know, impressive career that you had. Right. And you're managing 150 million in revenue and all of that stuff. And you worked with large teams. So how did this concept of building a team with little or no money down come up? Right, because you're used to huge budgets and all of this stuff. So where did this even start from?
Right. You know, I originally when I started, it was of course just me and figuring things out. After a couple of years, it was like, this is crazy. I need some help, but I can't afford to hire anyone to come in. And the one thing that I knew is that I'm good leading a team. I was like, but I have no team. And I was like, I need to figure out how. And so these, the things that I'm going to share today really came up over time in business, figuring out different ways and different pieces and that come into play. And so once I started to try different things and see what works, see what didn't work. Then I had a lot. I have a community of women entrepreneurs that we teach how to build a digital course. And they kept saying, becky, this is a. It's a lot I need to do, but I need help. And I was like, well, I got a couple things that can help you. And they were like, well, could you. I said, let me put it together. And I actually sat down and thought of the things that I've done. And when I looked at it, I was like, hey, this is. Let me. This is pretty good. Let me share this. And so I decided to share it. And as I was posting it and sharing it, the mastermind that we're in saw it and said, hey, can you do this for us? And I was like, sure.
So just like I went like, can you come do this for us too?
Yes, yes. It's a hot topic for business owners. It's a way to keep money in your pocket, but get the help that you need. And literally it is saved me thousands and thousands of dollars.
I love it. Okay, so I'm gonna get all the juice I can out of you. So we're just gonna get into the meat of it. All right? So in that presentation, you talked about five ways people can do this, right? So let's, let's walk through that because I'm sure everybody's like, okay, I'm so glad you guys are having a good time. Give us the meat.
Give it to me, give it to.
Me, give it to me. So give it to us.
So I'm gonna share the five things that I go over. So one is called the supporter volunteer. The second one is the Mentee program. The third one is a Win Win Barter Services. The fourth one is college Intern experience program. And the fourth one is the only one that you might spend some money on is hiring a part time contractor. So let's just jump into the first one, which is my favorite one that has netted me the most people on my team is the supportive volunteer. And it's called because there are people who already support you, who already love what you do, respect what you do, admire what you do, and want to be around you with what you do. And those are people who already support you. You just haven't given an ask to them yet. And so when I did the support a volunteer when I launched my membership three years ago, that's when I implemented the support a volunteer. And I decided to ask a group of women that I made a list of women I knew supported me, who I knew would help in any way they can. So I made a list of those people. And when I made a list, I made a list of what are their skill sets. And so I kind of wrote their skill sets down. And then I said, okay, let me just do it. And so I sent out this personal invitation letter to them and asked them if they could attend a meeting with me on a specific date. Because I have some really big news that I wanted to share with them, and I wanted to share it live with them. And so I sent everyone the information and I left some mystery in there because I didn't want to tell them everything so they could show up. And they showed up. I had 11 women to show up to that meeting. And in that meeting, I shared with them the big vision of what I was getting ready to do with the membership side of my business. And the biggest part of it is really painting the picture of the vision of. Of what you're trying to do. If you don't paint that vision and the picture, it's not going to be as effective. Because one of the things that I learned in Simon Sinek's book, start with why, is until you really understand the why, when you can get people invested in a cause, a belief or a movement that they resonate with, it changes the game. And that's what I was trying to do. I need them to be invested in this cause, in this movement, and I want them to believe what I believe about the people, people that we're going to help in the lives that we're going to change. And so I started with that story, with that vision. I put PowerPoint slides up. I was sharing with them, here's what the future looks like five years from now when we start this. And of the 11 women that I invited, 10 said yes. What? Yes. 10 said yes. The one that said no was because her schedule was busy and she said she had a membership. She's like, I just don't want any conflict between the two. I said, no problem. Totally get it, sis. I appreciate. She was like, but any kind of way I can support, I'm there for you. But the 10 that said yes, we then started to create what each person will be responsible for with the launch of the membership community that we had. And when we launched, we came out gangbusters in that. But it got me 10 people to support me in something that I just wasn't going to be able to do alone. And they all volunteered to show up and have been. This has Been the third year that I launched that program. Huge game changer for me. So that's my favorite one is the supporter volunteer. There are people who you already know. Just make a list and ask those people how to help you and what you're looking to be able to do.
Okay, so I have to interrupt you right here because this is mind blowing, okay? And you know, I watched your presentation already. But now, first of all, for those of you who are listening, you can see that she doesn't play because she got these people together. She had PowerPoints and all of that stuff. But look at the conversion ratio, right? You had 91% of the people say, yes, and you're starting off a business with, oh my gosh, I can't afford a team to a team of 10. That's. That's a big. That's a pretty big team, you know? You know what I mean? Like, so I love this. You know, my listeners know we're all about action. So you guys heard what she said. You make a list of the people who already support what you do. You take inventory of the skill sets that they have, and then you paint the picture. You cast the vision. Did you feel weird about asking them? Because I know someone's gonna say, well, I don't wanna take advantage of people. I don't wanna bother people, right? Like, this asking thing can be really weird. So was that a theme for you? And how did you overcome it?
I'm so glad that you asked that, because people have said, wow, Becky, I really don't know. The list that you're making are people that know you. Now, if you're making a list of people who don't know you, I can get you feeling that way. But these people know you, so they don't think you're coming to. They're trying to get over on me. That's not those people that are going to be on that list. These are people who know you and have a relationship you. They respect you, they care about you, they show up for you. You already know these people. And so that's the thing that I tell people. I say, get that out your head. Because people that know you and you make that list and have an ask that you're ready to ask for, you're going to be amazed. I mean, this is one way we did it with a supportive volunteer. But that's also something that I use especially in teaching my students. We have people that can help us accelerate our business quicker, faster. That's already in our Rolodex that we've never reached out to that. We've never made an ask for. You just have to know what the ask is as you're going through the process. But, yeah, you should not feel uncomfortable because everyone that sat around that table with me knew me and they knew the work that I did. They had already showed up in some other areas. So that's why I knew. I know these people are going to show up. Let me just see if they're going to take the step to walk with me on this journey to make this vision come true.
I love it. Love all of it. Okay. I just had to squeeze all that juice out. Okay, you can go to number two.
Number two is what I call the Mentee program. Now, how this came about was I get. I do a lot of speaking, and every time I speak, I would have people come and say, oh, I'm looking for a mentor. I'm looking for a mentor. And that's not the way to find a mentor. Is a stranger that you just heard say something really great like, FYI, that's.
Not a good way to.
That's not a way to get a mentor. And so I would. I mean, I heard this, like, consistently. And so I started thinking, how can I use this for my benefit? How do I use this for my benefit? And then I said, I know exactly how I'm going to use this for my benefit. Because as we do events and we do a few events a year, it was like, I always need help. I always need support. Okay, I know what I'll do with this Mentee program. So I created a Mentee application process. I sent it to my email list, I sent it to my social media list and said, hey, we're opening up our mentorship program. It's application process. And I select three to five people a year to work with me side by side. And the catcher in the process was in the application. I was very specific and very detailed when they filled it out. What are your skills? What are you really good at that you can support the company and the brand with your skills? Because mentorship is a win win. It is a give and give relationship.
I'm sorry, just say that again. Just say that part again. It is.
It's a giving give. It's not a hey, I'm going to come and get I can from you, Becky. No, that's not what this is. This is a. We're going to mutually benefit. Benefit each other. So there's a give that I'm going to give. And I'll be clear about what I give, and I want to know what you're going to give. And that my goal in the application was to eliminate the people who are coming to take. And so I was very specific in that application process of their skill set, what they bring to the table. And another requirement was that if they were local, because I had mentees from literally all over the US if they were local, they had to show up to my events and support and help at those events. If we did anything virtual, they would need to show up to those events as well. And then once I went through the application process, I interviewed them. In the interview, I talked about what it would look like to be a mentee with me and to make sure that it's a win win for both. And then I ended up, because I would do three to five a year, and I would always end with like eight or nine because I'm like, ah, this is good. This is good. So I got eight or nine mentees. I actually have. This is one. One of my mentee groups that they sent me this for my birthday. But these were the first set of mentees that I started with to help me.
And if you're listening, it's a really cute plaque, what I call it, with, you know, with their pictures on it. And that is so good. That is so good.
So that's the mentee program. People are already respect you, and people are, oh, my God, I'd love to work with you. Then put them to work.
Okay, so again, mind blowing, right? Because you're talking to physicians, and, you know, a lot of times when you see physicians together, we don't feel cool in any way. We're just like, we're people who went to a certain school and got a certain piece of paper. But then there's so many people who are like, you guys are amazing. Right? And so everybody who's listening has been approached by someone like, will you mentor me? I want to be like you, or whatever. And so what you're saying is we have a team that's been calling on us that we haven't even recognized.
Exactly.
That is so wild.
Yeah.
So, like, if I said I wanted to do a mentorship program, oh, my.
Goodness, it would go.
You already know I would have an immigration problem. You know what I mean? Like, it's like, right? This is so good. And it's not about, you know, because there's that thing of old. So you. You want people to work for you for free, and it's not about that. It's like you're describing it's a, it's a win win situation. There are people that I had the privilege of working for for nothing, that I learned lessons that I should have paid them. Oh, yeah, you know what I mean? They were so good that I should have paid them to work with them. So it's not about taking advantage of people. It's about creating a win win. It's about giving somebody else a leg up. It's about leveraging your experience, your expertise, your exposure, your platforms to lift somebody else up. But then it needs to be both ways.
Exactly. People who have end up mentoring me are people that I went to go serve because I was like, I love what they're doing. How can I go in and serve them? And. And those are the people that accelerated my company. They started connecting me. They opened doors for me. One company that I worked with was the one who introduced me to Coca Cola, which is how I end up working with Coke for five years. That was from someone mentoring me, but it came from me serving them too. So it's definitely not work for free thing. It's a give thing. So I'm giving to you information, knowledge, that's going to cut your learning curve. And you are giving to me because you're getting something as well too. It's a win.
I love it. And there's this concept called portable wealth that I learned about. And when you're serving like as a mentee in that kind of capacity, whatever skills you learn, they're yours. Like when people are like, they're using me, I'm like, it's impossible for someone to use you. What's the worst? You learned how to do social media. You learned how to run events. You learned how to do an introduction on stage. When you leave, that all goes with you.
That's, oh, I love that portable wealth.
You know, so it's like, just do it, you know, so when people are like, people are taking advantage, I'm like, people can't, they can't. Okay. Anyway, you got me all kinds of excited. All right, number three, we're ready. This is.
Number three is the Win Win barter system. And the Win Win barter system is where you partner with someone who has services that you need and you're going to provide services that they need. This has been helpful to some of the people that it's like, I know that they are able to do this or they do social media. I don't want to do my social media, but I also know that they're at a place where they need to grow Their business, well, that's my expertise, is growing business. So I started reaching out to people. And these are not strangers, these are people that I'm building relationships. Now, reaching out to strangers, you might get a kind of a funny look, but these are people that we've engaged in conversations. We might not know each other 100% well, but I know about them, they know about me, I know about their services. And then I would get on a call with them and I would, on my call, I'd want to know, so tell me about your services. And they will walk through their services, explain it. And I was like, you know, tell me about your business. What are you doing in business? Where are you stuck with? And once they started to share those things, then I would say, okay, this is where I can help them. Then I would do the ask to say, hey, I have a proposition for you. If it's something, something that you're interested in, totally love the work that you do and the services that you offer. But I want to see if we can partner and come up with a win win solution. And then I explain to them what I'm looking for that they have. And based on what they just told me, here's what I could do for you. And a lot of the people that I work with because we do events and we have a lot of corporate partners, it puts them on that stage with the people that I work with, with the community. And I'm always trying to. Everyone that I do a barter system with, I make sure that I support and promote them as well. So now you're getting the backing of a third party person with your company as you're trying to build it. And that happened because I partnered with a company that was a multimillion dollar company my second year in business and I'm just trying to fig and learn and I realized, oh my God, I need to be in this community, I need to be with these people, I need to work with them. And so that's where I realized that we can barter our services and it benefits both of us. And so creating a win win is to strategically partner with someone that has the services that you offer. I've had people with a due my social media, my automation, they have ran my events table, worked my sales table as well, done my graphic designs, different areas in business that someone, we have bartered services.
Wow. I love it. And again, I love that it's a win win. Okay, okay. So know your zone of genius and barter. Okay?
Exactly, exactly.
All right, number four, this is so good. Yeah.
Number four and number five. Number four is a college intern. And how I ended up doing college interns. I was serving at another event, working with another lady, helping behind the scenes at her event. And she was having a huge event and she had this group of college students come out and help. And I was like, how did you get them come on and help? How did that come about? And so she told me and the lady that coordinated it, I talked with her and then she was like, well, you know, we have different depending on the department. We always have a group of women that are looking for to be able to experience certain environments. So like she said, we have people who want to experience production AV and so they'll come out and do help shoots. Just let me know. Okay. And so I did, I reached out and said hey, I need some support. She had like 30 girls to show up for a big event that was three, zero 30 girls. It was a huge event. And to have volunteers from at every aspect from the check in the registration to the. And so she. I got 30 girls. We did group sessions, like two group sessions with them on what it's going to look like what we need them to do at the event. And that right there for me was like, okay, that's game changer. So that was the first kind of opening for me in there. And then from there it was really being able to identify people who are in the field that want to get some hands on experience. Like we had a marketing A person that her major was in marketing and she just, she wanted the experience. And a part of my commitment to them is, you know, I'll write a letter of recommendation for you, you know, when you, when you're ready to go to your first job. So my give to you is to share your experience in marketing in my company. And they. That right there was gold. So always write a letter to them as a recommendation letter and the things that they've done in marketing because they don't really have experience. Yeah.
And they can't get a job till they get experience.
Exactly.
They can't get experience. So some. Let's get them get experience.
So they needed some experience. This was a way for them to get experience. And they loved it because it was a community of women coming together. They always loved it. But we would use them for small little events that we did for short amount of time and it worked great.
Okay.
And the very last one is the one I call the part time contractor and the part time contractor. I ended up doing this because I Kept saying, I need help, I need a va. I need a va. Well, I really can't pay. And then I said, stop it Becky, you're going to hire someone part time for three months and see if it makes a difference. And so I committed that, okay, for three months I'm going to hire a VA and then I'll see whether or not I can continue to afford paying for a virtual assistant. I've had a VA ever since then because they took so much work off of me, I could really focus on generating dollars. And so from that point it was like, okay, but you know, forever. I kept saying, I can't afford, I can't afford, I can't afford. And I was like, just start part time and you can do that. And once I did that, we ended up like, okay, I need more hours. Let's add some more to the process. And for a lot of people will say what they can't do. You can but make a commitment and a time frame. You can't hire someone for one project and be over. I was like, OK, for at least 90 days. You need to feel this out and see if there's an impact to you. And it was a huge impact to me, which is why I was like, okay, I always need somebody to help me.
So after 90 days you didn't say, oh, I want all that work back.
It's like listen, what, what like what.
Else, what else can you take off my plate? Please take it.
Exactly then. And I told them, I was like, listen, if there are some things that you hear that I'm doing and you say, becky, you know I can do that, tell me that on come cause I'm trying to figure out what I do need to give to you. And she was great. She was like, hey, I got that. Hey, I got that. Oh, I didn't even think to give you that.
I love it.
It's a game changer.
I love it. I love all of it.
Yeah, those five things change the game for me. Four are absolutely free. There's no money exchange. The barter could be because you can even barter a lower price. So instead of if they charge 2,000, you can barter half price for what you're going to offer. So you can, there might be some money exchanged there. And then with a part time contractor, the rest is a give and take.
And the thing is, it's right there, you know, it's kind of like, you know, you look at the ground, it's like dirt. That's all that it is. But in there there's gold. Just dig a little deeper, you know what I mean? Because we all have people who would be supportive volunteers. We all have people who want us to mentor that them. Right? We all, you know, we all have access to colleges. Because if you run a business, even if the business is your personal brand and you're reaching out to marketing like that, nobody's giving them the opportunity to get experience. But we could, you know. Exactly. And it's not just, oh, this person worked for me. You can actually say they were in charge of this project. They did this, they did that. They manage the social media. They, you know, they did monthly reporting like you can, you know, so this is so great. Okay.
And they have so much value that it brings to you. And that that letter of recommendation carries a lot of weight for them.
I love it. I love all of this. Okay. You guys see why I was telling you? Have a treat. Okay. Okay. Now you have a workshop. And, you know, so she's been so kind. She's going to come do it in the business school and we're just going to milk her dry. But some people listening are not in the business school. Right. So you have a workshop where you, you have, you know, the templates, the sample emails, the whole nine yard, like, going deep in this. And this is so good that I'm like, going deep. I want that deep. So tell us about the workshop where people can find it and stuff like that.
Yeah, in the workshop, I actually walk you through all five of these and I provide you all of my templates. And like the barter, there needs to be a barter agreement. So you get a copy of the barter agree, you can insert your information. It's the barter agreement. I use the Mentee application, you get a copy of the Mentee application I use and you can add your content in there. So there are word documents so you can edit them to be able to use them. So you'll get that. You don't have to go and be like, okay, I gotta have make sure that I have a application process. Oh, my God. Now I have to create an application. So everything, we give you all the templates to everything, the support of volunteer, we walk you through the process step by step of everything that I did in that meeting with those women. I walk you through all of that. You get a copy of the email template that I sent out to them, inviting them to attend. You get that template that you can use and just wordsmith it to talk to your audience. But it's just to take A lot of the work off of you give you the templates and then you make it happen. And what we have found that people that go through each one of the steps, within two weeks, they got a team, they got people helping them. Two weeks, in two weeks, you got people ready to help you.
All right, enough said.
We find it, they can go to HireNow, pay later workshop.com that's higher now pay later workshop.com and because I am here with the doc, everyone listening can get that workshop for half off. So you half off, half off. 50% off.
Thank you. Thank you. You're amazing.
Yes. And they just need to use the coupon code for that is the initials, which is 8HNPL. Hired now, pay later. Use that coupon code and it'll give you 50% off the complete workshop. You'll get the workshop by email. The workshop is a video and a complete workbook of all of the stuff that I just shared. You'll be able to download each one of those documents and be able to customize it to you and the people that you're going to send it to.
Oh, my goodness. Thank you. I didn't see that one coming. I really, really, really appreciate it. And people, listen, not having a team will cost you. You guys know about that. You're the most expensive person on your team. So if you're doing anything that somebody else can do, you're costing your company money. And now she's showing you how to build it for free. So please go hire now pay later workshop.com put in the coupon code and get this taken care of. Okay, so what final words would you have? So I know a lot of people, so for the most part, physicians can be perfectionists. Right? You have to have everything perfect. And this is going to be a little messy, right. In the sense that you're going to have to get it right. You're going to have to try some stuff and all of that. So that may create an opportunity for procrastination.
Yeah.
So what would you say to that doc? Now you know what it's like to work with the team. You know the magic of a team. What would you tell them?
You know, one of the things is that you cannot. There's not one person that you can name that has been uber super successful by themselves. Not one. Everybody had some help at some point. And so you can't do it all by yourself. And the other thing that I believe happens when we are doing it by ourselves is that we stifle the growth of the people that we're supposed to touch the lives of the people that we're supposed to. To. Because we're at capacity. And the minute we get some help, we open that. That whole gateway opens up for us to be able to touch and help more people, because we now have someone helping us through a process. Especially the things that you don't like to do and the things that you hate to do. Those things, you're not doing those very well anyway. Why not get some help? So being able to utilize a different skill, get some help. Oh, well, I'm telling you, it's just game changer when you're like, oh, I can hand that over to so and so. Oh, I can hand that over. And after you do it once, then you'll be totally sold and bought into it.
I love it. Thank you, thank you, thank you. All right, so listen, go get the workshop, okay? And while you're at it, you may go like, five is overwhelming. I can't do it all. Pick one. Pick one and own one. So if it's supportive volunteers, just pick one, own one. And when you master that, you can pick up another one, and that's fine. But the point is, in two weeks, you can have a team. Exactly. You can have a team of two, of five, of 10, of 12, but in two weeks, you can have a team. So please don't listen to this podcast episode and not do anything with it, okay? Do something. Go get the workshop and go get your team now. You can do it. All right, Becky, thank you so, so much for coming on. I really appreciate. This was a really good episode and everybody listening. This is not one you keep to yourself, okay? So you go share it.
