How I Choose Coaches and Programs
30 Jan 2026 · 23 min
Solo episode by Dr. Nneka Unachukwu (EntreMD Podcast) advising physician entrepreneurs how she chooses coaches and programs using a three-step framework: (1) review a coach’s content to see if it resonates and yields quick wins, (2) verify the coach’s results for themselves and their clients, and (3) ensure the coach’s strategies fit the buyer’s personality and audience. She addresses decision barriers (FOMO, indecision), urges listeners to make an executive decision about investing in coaching, and promotes her Seven Figure Physician CEO audiobook, the EntreMD Business School cohort (shares student results), and the EntreMD On Demand subscription as resources.

If your business isn't working the way you expected, it's not because you're bad at business. It's because no one ever taught you how it actually works. We were trained to master algorithms in medicine, but when it comes to revenue teams and growth, we were never taught anything. We weren't even told to figure it out. We just assumed somehow we'd know. Like it would magically make sense. But it doesn't. The era of the Seven Figure Physician CEO is here. And it's not about working harder. It's about learning entrepreneurship as a system. The same way you mastered ACLs and pals, you can master the algorithm of building a profitable scalable business. That's why I recorded the Seven Figure Physician CEO audiobook. Whether you're building a medical or non medical business, and whether your goal is your first million, first 2 million, first 5 million, first 10 million, this is where the journey starts. There is no Calvary coming to save us. We are the Calvary.
So.
So go get your audiobook now. Www.entremd.com 7Figurebook. And let's rewrite the narrative for physicians starting today.
Hi, docs.
Welcome to the Entre MD Podcast, where it's all about helping amazing physicians just like you. Embrace entrepreneurship so you can have the freedom to live life and practice medicine on your terms. I'm your host, Dr. Unna.
Hello, hello, hello. Welcome to another episode of the entremd podcast. As always, I'm excited that you are listening. You are the reason why I do this podcast. Thank you for sharing, rating, reviewing. I just love it. And thank you for sharing your stories with me. Okay, now, I get asked this question a lot. How do I know the right coach? How do I know the right program and all of this stuff? And I want to answer that question right? And there's so many ways to do this, but I'm going to tell you the way I have done it. And I've had a huge return on investment with coaching and programs. Right? You guys have heard me talk a lot about my first introduction to coaching. And it was a $43,000 package and it was a group program. It wasn't one to one. It was. And it's one of the things that, you know, my husband still talks about it. He says, oh, this is, this is the best $43,000 I've ever spent. And I have people who are like, how did you become this person? Or they hear me speak and they're like, you're just a natural. I'm like, no, I'm Not a natural, not even remotely. But I've had a huge return on investment in the programs that I've done. I love coaching, I love programs. I love personal development. Why I am my most important asset. Like, people will spend $50,000 to redo a kitchen, but they don't want to spend $50,000 on themselves. And I go, like, I am more important than my kitchen because I produce all of this. You know? You know what I'm saying? I'm not saying that to say, go spend $50,000, but I want you to see the analogy. If you invest in your house, if you invest in outfits, if you invest in your car, if you, if you invest in real estate, I mean, you are, you are your best asset. You are your asset that appreciates the most. You are the rate limiting step in your life. Oh, my goodness. Okay, so clearly I love coaching, right? But how do you choose the right coach? How do you choose the right program? And I'm going to show you three things I do to help me make that choice, okay? And I've done this again and again and again. I've done one to one, I've done group, I've done all kinds of stuff. In fact, when I set my budget for the year, I have a budget for coaching. I have a budget for investing in coaching and pro, even if I don't know what they are yet, I'm like, okay, here, this is how much I'm going to spend this year on that, right? Because if you think about it, if I don't get better year to year, then I'm going to produce the same year, right? Like, people are like, oh, my December 31st is so amazing. People are so excited. They're excited about the new year. Like, this is going to be the year. The only problem with the new year is you're in it, I'm in it, right? And so if I don't change, my year doesn't change, my results don't change. If I don't change, my business doesn't change. Like, I'm crystal clear that I am the problem in my business. It's not other people, it's, it's me. When I get better, things get better, right? That's just the way it is. So I choose how much I'm going to spend investing, but then once I choose how much I'm going to spend, then I choose who I spend it with. You know what I mean? Okay. So I do three things to decide. The first thing I do is I review their content, okay? I review Their content. Most people who are coaches or who have a program or any of those things, they would have a podcast or they would have a YouTube channel, or they would have a blog, or they have a very active social media. And so I spend time listening to their content or reading or watching, whichever. I spend time interacting with their material. And it's kind of like, does it resonate with me, right? Does it resonate with me? Is it in a format that I can consume it in, right? So for instance, I'm a very tactical kind of person. Like, I don't like fluff, I don't like all of those things. I don't like cheerleading. I'm just like, tell me what to do. Show me possibilities. And I'm just going to go do them. And if you listen to the podcast, you'll find out, you know, that's, that's what I like. So you get, you know, this is the mindset, this is this, these are the actions you can take. Go take it. Right? Like, that's kind of the framework for it, and that's the way I learn best. So listen to their content, spend time with their content. You spend time with their content. You get quick wins from their content. You're like, wow, look at that. Look at what I got just from the podcast. Look at what I got by just applying this tip that he gave or she gave. Wonder what it will be like to do an immersion with them, right? So spend time with their content. Number two, review their results. And you're not just reviewing the results they've had, but also the results they've helped other people create, right? So we live in the Internet age. And I'm not saying this to say I'm specifically talking about anybody or anybody I know like that, but anybody can claim anything, right? There are people whose businesses are not working and they're business coaches. Now, my philosophy is I follow people and not titles. So I apply this mostly to books, but it's the same concept. For instance, I read authors, not titles. So you can say how to build $1 million business, but if you don't have a million dollar business, I am not buying that book. And that's just me. I'm not buying it because you can only give what you have. You can theorize, right? Because million dollars is math. I mean, you can work out the math and say, this is how you do it, but if you haven't done it, I don't know how you're going to tell me to do it. And again, that's just me. So results. Do they have the results? Do they have the results? If they don't have it, maybe you should look for someone who has the results, right? So that's number one. Number two, have they helped people create the results? Now, we don't look at everyone they work with because the thing with a coaching relationship or being in a program is that it's. It's like. It's like a marriage, right? In the sense that you can have a great coach, but you can have a person without commitment being coached, and they're not going to get the result because a great coach is not enough. So everybody may not have the desired outcome, right?
And it may not just be that.
You know, they're not committed, but there's a time thing, right? So maybe they're still in their process and all that. But have they been able to produce the results for people? Is there evidence that they've been able to do what they say they will do with others? And if the answer is yes, then I'm. I'm all in, right? So I look at their results, the results they've been able to get for people, and the results that they've been able to get for themselves. I look at both of them, okay? And if I'm like, what? I want that, then it's a go. The third thing I look at is I review their strategies, okay? And the reason why I review this is because your business is already in you. The strategies that work with your personality and the kind of people you're trying to reach and all of that, they're already in you. Your coach will kind of show you, and you're like, yeah, that resonates. That sounds like exactly what. It's already in you, right? And so there are people who use strategies that simply aren't going to work for your business type. And if that's the case, then working with them is not going to be beneficial to you. So, for instance, I met a coach, and he helps people scale to seven figures. And he's done it, I mean, like, with people who own gyms and, you know, people who own restaurants and like a whole wide variety of business types, right? And then I get to get behind the scenes to see what he does. And a core part of what he does is cold calling. Is cold calling. Now, I want to imagine. I want you to imagine getting a phone call and say, hey, is this Dr. Smith? And you're like, yeah, this is she. And it's like, oh, have you heard about Entre MD and this and that and that? And that come sign up for the business school and all of that. I'm like, that's not going to go well with my audience at all. And it's not the way I would like to do things anyway. Right. I would prefer what I'm doing now, which is giving you value, helping you get wins. And you can say, man, you know what? I'm ready to go all in. This works for me. What she says resonates with me. I've listened to every podcast episode. This is what I want. The results the business school people are having, I want to have results like that. Right? I would rather have it that way. Or have you come to a live event and we do our thing and you decide and stuff like that, but not cold calling. So even though that coach has great content and that coach is getting the results, I am not going to work with that coach because our strategies are not aligned. Right. I've met another coach, and her model is a lot of sales calls. And as an entrepreneur, you have to do sales calls, but the whole model is sales calls. And I'm like, yeah, no, right? Is it a bad model? No. Now remember, you know, because sometimes, you.
Know, when you've been on, on the.
Internet for a little bit, what ends up happening is people are like, oh, the strategy to build a seven figure business is Facebook groups. The strategy to build a seven figure business is Facebook ads. Somebody else has the strategy to build a seven figure business is cold calling, says this, I can show you how to do this without even talking to people. We automate everything. The answer, the question is, who's right? And the answer is all of them. Those are all strategies that will work. Right? But you're not going to use all of them. You know what I'm saying? So there are many ways to do this. It doesn't make the coach good or bad. The question is, is this the right fit for me? Okay. Is this a right fit for me? So I review their content. That way you get a feel, right? You get to know if this resonates with you. You get, you know, to know, is this someone that I will want to listen to? You get to get quick wins from the person's methods and, you know, try out their stuff, then review their results, the results they get for others, and the results they get for themselves, and then you review their strategies. So the forceful sales calls, like, why are you not making this decision? Why do you need to talk to your husband to find out? Like, you're not going to do that. You're not going to do that. You know what I mean? And even though they can get the results and they have people got the results, you're like, yeah, I don't want to do that. Okay? So those are simple. Those are three simple things. But, you know, there's some things that will get in your way. One of them is fomo, right? And you're like, oh, everybody's going here. And I want to challenge that. You know what I mean? Because you're going to decide. I want coaching because. So why is it? I want to finally launch that business, okay? I want to scale that business, okay? I want to become a great speaker, okay? Why do you want coaching? Then you find the coach who will get you there, okay? LeBron James is not going to get a baseball coach. He's a basketball player. So you don't make a decision to work with a coach because everybody's going there. You don't sign up for a program because everybody's signing up. You are the CEO of your own company. You make executive decisions, decisions. I will give you an roi, right? So what do I want? What do I want? And what you want may be intangible, right? It may not be as specific. For instance, when I started, my first thing was a speaking program. Now, super shy, socially awkward, introverted introvert, signing up for a speaking program, that's just wild. But I wanted to be. I wanted to conquer that thing. I wanted to be able to speak well on stage. I wanted to speak confidently on stage. I want to get my message out there. I didn't want all this stuff bottled up in me anymore. So I just want to speak, okay? I've had people come into the business school, and it wasn't as tangible. Their thing was, I know there's more. I want more. I'm like, I know how to pull more out. Let's do it, right? So decide. Make an executive decision. Don't do fomo. Don't do that. You're a CEO, okay? Even if you work for yourself, you're a CEO. Don't do fomo. The second thing that will kind of get in your way is indecision, right? Like, you're like, okay, I've listened to their content, I looked at their results, I've reviewed their strategies. But what if this doesn't work? What if this. What if that. No indecision. Make the decision, then. Make the decision. Right. When you got married, if you're married, did you know absolutely that of all the men in the universe, this was the one you made your best decision? When you chose your medical school, did you know, like, this is the school that will make me what I need to be? Chances are, you know, what of this? What of that? What if I went to this one? What did you do? You made your best decision when you were buying your house. Is that the only house? Is that the only house you liked? Do you not have a little nagging thought, like, what if it was the other one that's a five minute drive away that has a slightly bigger pool? You made the best decision, okay? And that's what you do with coaching. That's what you do with programs. You don't wait forever and ever. You don't do that. You make a decision. You make your best decision, okay? And oh, but what if it's not the perfect decision? Okay, now I'm going to release another podcast episode, how to get the Best out of Coaching, and I'm going to show you how to make it where you get a significant roi. So just make the decision and we'll talk about how to make it the best decision, okay? So make the best decision you can based on what we talked about, okay? And just bite the bullet. Bite the bullet. For instance, if you're here and you're building a business or you're scaling a business or you're scaling a platform, or you're an intrapreneur, any of the above, and you're like, I'm ready to do this. Like, I mean it. Then maybe the on trendy business school is where you should be like, you have to ask yourself, why am I not there? And listen. If you're like, I just listen to you to listen and all that stuff, but you're not really my people, that's okay. But make the decision, okay? Make the decision to move forward. Make the decision to get a coach on your team. Make a decision to get in a program that will help you go forward, okay? So if, if, if the entrepreneur business school is not your thing, if I'm not your, it's okay, but pick the thing and bite the bullet. But if you've been like, I've thought about it the last few times it's been open, I thought about it. What I want you to do is I want you to ask yourself, why though. Why am I not there? Why am I not there? You're an entrepreneur. You have pri. You're, you're, you're starting a private practice, you're starting a coaching practice. You're ready to scale. Why are you not there? Why are you not investing in yourself right why aren't you? And then bite the bullet. Go click on the link on trend.com forward/business and apply. Just go apply. Why? This could be the decision that changes everything. Now, at the time of this recording, this is the day after we did the welcome party for the new cohort in the business school. And one of the doctors says, I have experienced so much transformation, and I had been doing all these certifications. He's an executive coach. I've been doing all these certifications and all this stuff, and I'm like, it's time to do something with all these things that have been acquiring. And he's been in the school for four months. Four months. And he's like, I've generated money to cover over six months of my monthly tuition, and he's only been there for four months. Now, am I saying everybody's going to get the exact same result? No, but I'm showing you what is possible. I'm showing you what's possible. You've listened to many podcast episodes where you have, like, a Karen Kaufman who started her practice, and she had over 350 people on her wait list. 350 people, right. I had another doc on there who's been like, oh, I haven't told you this yet, but I've been on over 12. You know, I've been on over 20 podcasts as a guest. I've done a weekly show for the last five to six months. I just got tapped on to do a paid speaking gig. And all this stuff. She just has all this stuff going on, so why not you?
Right?
And again, I'm not saying if this is not for you, come sign up. Because if you are not supposed to be there, you shouldn't be. But if you're looking to start or grow or scale a business and you've listened to this content, you're like, this is amazing. You've looked at the results. I have results. Right? I have results. My clients have results. And you've looked at the methods, right? And you're like, I like the strategies. I've done some of them, and it's making a huge difference. Then I want to invite you to come join us. Okay? Come join us. And let's 10x all this stuff. Okay?
All right.
So bite the bullet. And I want you to think about it. Coaching has been the best investment I've made. Coaching and programs, best investment I've made in my life as an entrepreneur. I would not be the entrepreneur I am today if not for that. And my practice, my private practice, it would not have thrived in the midst of a pandemic without that. And I would not be in a position where I'm like, oh, my goodness, I want to help 80,000 doctors and I'm on my way without it. And I want you to have the same experience. I want you to be able to say, coaching has been the best investment I've made in my life as an entrepreneur. Because it is. And I've. I've been in rooms. I've been in rooms where to get in the room you have to be a seven figure CEO and stuff like that. They all have coaches. They all do. So can you do it by yourself? Yeah, eventually, maybe. But that's not the pathway. You didn't use it in medical school. Athletes don't use it. Very successful entrepreneurs don't either. They don't do it by themselves. They don't DYI it. They don't Google it. Okay? So come join us. And I want you to have that experience as well. And if we're not for you, go join that. The bottom line is make a decision, do it. And I want you to celebrate the impact of coaching. All right, So I know this is a lot, but I felt I needed to do it because when you look at the results I'm getting, it's a direct result of the investment I make in myself. And I want you to have that too. Okay? And I want to celebrate you. You guys know I love celebrating. Okay? So if you've already started getting wins, whether from the podcast or if you're an entrepreneur, business school, let me know. Okay? I wanna shout you out, celebrate you, and I can't wait to hear you say, like, oh, my God, Dr. Oona, you are right. This has been the best investment I've made ever. Okay? All right, so thank you for listening. As always, please help me reach 80,000 doctors. Share this podcast episode with a friend, With a doctor. Tell him, look, you need to listen to this, okay? And we are gonna start trying to get into the institutions as well, the residency programs, all of that.
