This is a podcast episode titled "Selling is sometimes sleazy" (Entre MD Podcast) recorded July 28, 2022. It features Dr. Nneka Unachukwu as the primary speaker/host alongside an announcer (Speaker B). Dr. Unachukwu uses a dating-to-marriage analogy to explain that selling itself isn't inherently sleazy but can be if done poorly, and she outlines a three-stage framework for physician entrepreneurs: put yourself out there (awareness), build relationships through regular content/engagement (know/like/trust), and make the ask (the sale). The episode promotes the Seven Figure Physician CEO audiobook and Entre MD educational offerings (Business School and On Demand subscription).

If your business isn't working the way you expected, it's not because you're bad at business. It's because no one ever taught you how it actually works. We were trained to master algorithms in medicine, but when it comes to revenue teams and growth, we were never taught anything. We weren't even told to figure it out. We just assumed somehow we'd know. Like it would magically make sense. But it doesn't. The era of the seven Figure Physician CEO is here. And it's not about working harder. It's about learning entrepreneurship as a system. The same way you mastered ACLs and pals, you can master the algorithm of building a profitable scalable business. That's why I recorded the Seven Figure Physician CEO audiobook. Whether you're building a medical or non medical business, and whether your goal is your first million, first 2 million, first 5 million, first 10 million, this is where the journey starts. There is no calvary coming to save us. We are the calvary. So. So go get your audiobook now. Www.entremd.com 7Figurebook. And let's rewrite the narrative for physicians starting today.
Hi, docs. Welcome to the Entre MD Podcast, where it's all about helping amazing physicians. Just like you, embrace entrepreneurship so you can have the freedom to live life and practice medicine on your terms.
I'm your host, Dr. Umna. Well, hello. Hello, my friends. Welcome back to another episode of the entremd podcast. I was just sitting here and thinking, I was like, man, this is so good. I need to share my thinking with my audience. And you're really gonna love this now. You know, I talk a lot about selling, not being sleazy and slimy and all of that, but there can be sleazy and slimy selling, right? Like, so selling is not good or bad. Selling just is. But people can sell in a bad way. People can sell in a good way. I was trying to look for an analogy. So it's kind of like somebody saying that asking somebody to marry you is sleazy. Well, it's not, right? You know, think about the oohs and the ahs and the ah and all those things that go on, right? With proposals. And people are sharing that on Facebook and streaming it and all of that stuff. It's an exciting time. It's a fun time, but it can be sleazy too, right? And so, you know, someone asks, saying, will you marry me? Is the same thing. Like, would you come work with me? And it can produce that same result. Like, I would love to work with you, I'd love to get those results, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. But can it be done in a slimy way? Yes. Right? So think about going to meet somebody, a guy. So, you know, a guy walking up to a lady and this is his first time of meeting her, and it's like, oh, my goodness, you're so beautiful. Will you marry me? That is insane. That is crazy. That does not make any sense whatsoever. That is not going to produce oohs and ahs and streaming on Facebook for most people, right? And in the same way, coming out of nowhere to just say, hey, work with me, work with me, work with me in the same way. That can be pretty slimy. And so in a relationship, how does that work? Now, there, of course, there are many ways, right? But, you know, we're using an analogy here, a picture. So work with me. But it would usually look like, you know, boy meets girl, right? And they get into a normal conversation, and the conversation becomes more of an explorative conversation. Like, you know, what could this look like? You know, I might like you, you know, those kind of things. And then we get to what would marriage look like? And then we get to the proposal, right? And in our world as entrepreneurs, what that could look like is. Is, well, I start off by putting myself out there so I can be seen, right? Because people typically don't find themselves in their houses, so I'm putting myself out there so I can be seen. I could be doing that through networking or speaking or posting on social media, you know, attending events, things like that, talking to referral sources. That's all me putting myself out there, you know, getting in front of people who have access to my ideal audience, right? That's me putting myself out there. That's stage one, if you will. Right? And then some people may go like, you know, you know, she's kind of interesting. He's kind of interesting. And they start maybe following me, right? Following my journey and stuff like that. But one of the things that happens in dating is that there's periodic conversations, fairly frequent, right? And how do we do that as entrepreneurs? Well, we get to that state where we. We have, you know, it could look like you have a platform where you're talking to your people frequently, weekly. That could be a podcast, it could be a YouTube channel, it could be a blog, it could be engagement on social media. So people are, you know, commenting on your stuff, you're responding, or you're going out there and you're talking to your audience, right? And so you're that's part of your relationship building. The know like and trust factor is, is working. Solomon, you go like, well, you know, this looks like somebody I do want to work with. Right? And you're helping them get wins. They're having a great experience with you, even though they're not necessarily paying clients. Right. But you're serving your audience. Okay, so you do that. Now, at some point you are going to have to pop the question, right? So no matter how long people have been dating, for the point where we are now, like, yes, we're going to get married is the point where a question is asked. Right, right. An ask is made. And the same thing as entrepreneurs. You can do a lot of content, you can send them emails every week, you can engage in social media. But if you're not asking, people are not going to say yes because they're not going to say yes to a question that you're not asking. And so that's when you want to start thinking about, you know, asking. And that ask could be in the context of an email. It could be social media, it could be one to one on a phone call or in person. It could be at a conversion event, like a webinar masterclass, a live in our. It could be any of those things. But you're asking, will you work with me? Right? Will you work with me? This is what it will look like. This is what life can look like on the other side. These are the pain points you have. These are the things that I do address. These are examples of people I've done it for and all of that, right? And so then you say you pop the question. And so for a percentage of people, they're going to say yes. Now when they say yes, it doesn't end there, right? Because think about, if someone says yes, they have the wedding, then the married life starts, right? And you don't necessarily earn your stay with your spouse, but you, you keep working on that relationship for the relationship to continue. And the same way as an entrepreneur, after they say yes, then you start working with them, then you start serving, you start helping them get results. And then for some of them, they will continue to work with you. For some of them, they'll say you're amazing, they'll invite other people to work with you and things like that. And the relationship just goes on and on like it becomes the gift that keeps giving. And in fact, as your business grows, one of the places you never want to neglect is taking care of the clients, patients that already work with you because they can continue to work with you. And they can also tell other people around you. So they're like a really important part of. Of the health of your business, right? And it's not like you're taking care of them for that reason. You're taking care of them because that's what you signed up to do. But at the same time, you also want to be aware that you want to take really good care of them. So let's go back to it again. Is selling sleazy? No, but it can be, right? But if the image you use, the mirror you use is the relationship is kind of like dating into marriage. Popping the question. Like selling is literally popping the question, right? Popping the question. That could be an exciting thing. It could be the start of a really beautiful relationship and all of that. And what if we could think about selling that same way, right? So think about this. You start putting yourself out there, okay? We talked about all the ways you can do that. You're putting yourself out there. That's stage one. So people become aware, right? People come aware of you. And then step two, you start to quote, unquote, date them. So you're serving them, you're putting out content, you're talking to them at least weekly through social media. It could be daily, but you're out there. So you're building this relationship so they're in a relationship with you, the know, like. And trust is growing and all of that, right? And then the third stage is you do the actual sell, which is the actual ask. Oh, is is sleazy and manipulative. No. Someone's saying, will you marry me? This is exciting times because things are about to change. It's going to be beautiful and all of that stuff in the same way. When people say yes to you, oh, my goodness, what could life look like on the other side? I think about it all the time with the doctors that within the entrepreneur business school, I'm like, oh, my goodness, right? Where people are like, I crossed my first six, six figures, or I launched that business, or I crossed my first seven figures, or I, you know, I finally hit the 5 million, 7 million mark. All kinds of stuff, right? And so there's so many amazing things that can happen. So many amazing things. I want to think about that when you quote, unquote, pop the question, okay? So as an entrepreneur, what is one of the things you can do to build a profitable brand? Number one, you put yourself there so people can find you. Number two, you show up and serve your audience so that you can build that relationship with them, you can date them and then three become very good at popping the question and do it often, right? Give people the opportunity to change their lives by working with you. Okay, so embrace those three things. They are so simple, but if you do them, they will change your business and ultimately change your life. So three simple things. Become a master at doing these three things.
