Empathy means understanding someone's emotional state, not feeling bad for them. That's sympathy. Speaker B separates the two: sympathy is feeling for someone, empathy is feeling with them. Most people mix them up.

Okay. All right. Okay. So I guess that links to the, to the, to the next objection or the next argument. The next objection is the empathy argument. People say you need to feel bad because if you don't, you couldn't be empathetic towards someone. I'm like, well, that doesn't make sense. Surely, surely the person who's saying that is confusing empathy of sympathy. Sympathy means feeling sad or sorry for someone. Empathy means just understanding how someone feels. So if you want to be sympathetic, you need to feel bad because that's what the word means. But you don't need to feel bad to understand that someone else might be feeling bad. I think what often happens that people are empathetic and sympathetic at the same time and they've somehow now merged the two where they are two distinctly different things.
Very good. From the Latin feeling for versus feeling with. Yes. Right. Empath versus sympath.
